第一节 (共 15 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 37.5 分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的 A、B、C、D 四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
Would you like to know something that our ancestors knew? Here is a chance to take a trip back in time to the
following places and discover it.
Great Orme Copper Mines, Wales
The discovery of the copper mines changed much of what we knew about our Bronze Age ancestors. It was
believed that metalworking had come to England with the Romans, but this Welsh discovery proved that the British
were already working metals 4,000 years ago. The mines are made up of five miles of passageways. Some are so
small that historians think they were dug by children as young as five years old.
Jurassic Coast, Dorset
Spreading an impressive 95 miles between Exmouth and Dorset, the Jurassic coast is frequently described as a
“walk through time”. It’s perfect for looking for fossils after a storm. Several beach towns along the way make for
a much-needed short break. The clean water is perfect for swimming and the Clock Tower Café which is typical of
the countryside has beautiful views and delicious cakes.
Cheddar Gorge, Somerset
There’s something other-worldly about this limestone gorge, where caves carved out by an underground river
were once used by our ancient ancestors for maturing cheese and other foods. Visitors to the Gorge can also explore
a cave where Britain's oldest human skeleton, the 9,000-year-old Cheddar Man, was first discovered back in 1903.

Pang Zhongwang, 26, a PhD candidate at Tsinghua University, has recently been appointed culture-tourism
ambassador for his hometown Wuqiao County, Hebei, returning him to public spotlight. He first gained national
attention in 2017 for scoring 684 on the gaokao despite significant family challenges — his father has
schizophrenia and his mother had lower limb disability.
Despite media portrayals of financial struggles, Pang notably declined financial assistance. Now excelling in
his PhD program in precision instruments, he has published several papers in peer-reviewed journals.
Tragically, Pang’s mother, who had the greatest influence on his life, passed away in 2020 at 48. From
childhood, Pang shouldered household responsibilities and cared for his parents. Before the gaokao, while
classmates focused solely on studies, he collected recyclables to support his family.
His mother once said: “This child is my greatest hope.” Pang credits his optimism to her teachings. His recent
declaration — “Our generation’s mission is to serve the country through scientific research” — became a social
media sensation, inspiring millions of disadvantaged youth.
4. Why did Pang Zhongwang first become famous in 2017?
A. He was appointed ambassador for his hometown.
B He got high marks in the gaokao despite family difficulties.
C. He declined financial assistance from entrepreneurs.
D. He published papers in top journals.
5. What can be inferred about Pang’s mother from the passage?
A. She passed away before Pang entered Tsinghua.

B. Financial support is the key to achieving one’s goals.
C. One should avoid media attention to focus on research.
D. Hard work and a positive attitude can overcome difficulties.

Many educators have been teaching themselves how to use AI. For Jerome Ong, a 5th grade teacher in
Ridgewood, New Jersey, AI has changed the way he approaches teaching. He now uses AI tools every week in his
classroom. “You have to find what works for your students,” he said. Ong not only teaches his students what AI is,
but also where it falls short. “If you keep at it and say, ‘No, you’re wrong, you’re wrong,’ eventually AI will say, ‘I’
m sorry, I was wrong.’ Doing that with your class can show you that AI isn’t really as smart as you think it is,” Ong
said.
This summer, Microsoft, OpenAI and Anthropic announced a first-of-its-kind plan to train hundreds of
thousands of members of the American Federation of Teachers. “I think if we’re going to make AI work for
students and kids, we need to listen to teachers,” said Microsoft president Brad Smith. The $23 million investment
will go toward virtual and in-person training in New York City.
“The direct connection between a teacher and their kids can never be replaced by new technologies, but if we
learn how to use them, set practical guidelines and put teachers in the driver’s seat, teaching and learning can be
better,” said AFT President Randi Weingarten.
However, critics cite cheating concerns and Microsoft’s own research, which showed a self-reported reduction
in critical thinking skills when AI was not used responsibly. AFT member Lois Weiner thinks teachers would be
better served by more support within schools than by a partnership with Silicon Valley. “There is so much boredom
in the job, but the answer to that is to improve teachers’ working conditions,” said Weiner, adding that AI does not
achieve better work conditions for teachers.
Smith argued education should be left to teachers: “Those of us in the tech field need to provide the tools and
help school boards, districts, and teachers so they decide how to put those tools into practice.”
8. What do the underlined words “falls short” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Is wrong. B. Has limitations.
C. Is not enough. D. Fails to work.
9. What is the main idea of paragraph 2?
A. Teachers are urged to listen to students. B. Microsoft will invest $23 million in NYC.
C. Tech companies plan to train teachers. D. Three firms aim to promote AI in schools.
10. What can be inferred from Lois Weiner’s comments?
51327059213852693670601091014833609775190A. AI can help reduce teachers’ boredom. B. Partnership with tech firms benefits teachers.
C. Teachers are smarter than AI. D. Teachers need more support within schools.
11. What is Brad Smith’s attitude towards AI in education?
A. Supportive. B. Critical. C. Doubtful. D. Neutral.
D
We often hear people complain, “There aren’t enough hours in the day.” In our modern society, the feeling of
time poverty — the sense that time is racing away from us — is common. The constant connectivity of digital
technology, with its endless demands on our attention, only makes this feeling worse. However, recent research
suggests that the solution to our time troubles might be as simple as stepping outside into a park or forest.
Psychologist Ricardo Correia from the University of Turku in Finland has found that nature has a profound
effect on how we perceive time. By reviewing multiple studies that compared people’s experiences in urban versus
natural environments, Correia discovered a consistent pattern. People report feeling that time is passing more
slowly and feels more expansive when they are in nature. For instance, a 20-minute walk in the countryside is often
perceived as longer than a 20-minute walk in a busy city center. This effect is not just about physical activity;
performing tasks in green spaces also leads people to feel that time is lasting longer compared to doing the same
tasks in built-up areas.
This altered perception of time is not limited to the present moment. Spending time in natural settings also
shifts our mental focus from the immediate to the future. In nature, the stress of urgent but unimportant tasks tends
to fade away. This allows us to see the bigger picture and consider our long-term needs. When we are less focused
on instant demands, we become less impulsive. Nature seems to give us the mental space to delay instant
satisfaction in favor of more significant, long-term rewards.
This shift in perspective has practical benefits. It helps us prioritize our actions more effectively. Instead of
constantly reacting to the latest demand and living in a state of just keeping our heads above water, we can make
decisions that align with our long-term goals. Therefore, by simply spending more time in natural environments, we
might not only feel like we have more time, but also use the time we have more wisely.
12. What is the main writing technique used in the first paragraph?
A. It presents a common problem to introduce the topic.
B. It uses a fictional story to create a sense of mystery.
C. It lists statistical data to support the main argument.
D. It defines a complex term to clarify the subject.
13. What can be inferred from Ricardo Correia’s research?
A. Urban environments always make people feel more stressed.
B. Physical exercise is the key factor in changing time perception.
513270592138526936706010910148336097751906731008326755C. People in cities tend to be more impulsive than those in the countryside.
D. The same amount of clock time can feel different depending on the setting.
14. According to the passage, how does nature help people with their long-term goals?
A. By slowing down their heart rate and relaxing their muscles.
B. By shifting their focus from immediate needs to future priorities.
C. By providing a quiet place to write down their plans.
D. By making them forget about all their past regrets.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. Time Poverty: A Modern Dilemma
B. Digital Technology: The thief of Time
C. Nature’s Secret: How to Make Time Slow Down
D. Urban vs. Rural: A Study of Lifestyle Differences

It was a rainy winter evening. Joe could see an old lady on the side of the road waiting for help. So he stopped
his car and got out of his car. When he came closer to her, the lady looked in despair. No one had stopped to help
her for the last hour or so. Was he going to hurt her? He didn’t look safe. Joe could see that she was scared.
Knowing how she felt, Joe said quickly. “I’m here to help you, ma’am. It is too cold outside. Please go and stay
inside the car. By the way, my name is Joe.”
Well, all she had was a flat tire, but for an old lady, that was bad enough. While Joe was changing the tire, the
lady rolled down the window and started to talk to him. She told him that she was only passing through. She was

following places and discover it.

A. AI can help reduce teachers’ boredom. B. Partnership with tech firms benefits teachers.
C. Teachers are smarter than AI. D. Teachers need more support within schools.
11. What is Brad Smith’s attitude towards AI in education?
A. Supportive. B. Critical. C. Doubtful. D. Neutral.

For instance, a 20-minute walk in the countryside is often
perceived as longer than a 20-minute walk in a busy city center. This effect is not just about physical activity;
performing tasks in green spaces also leads people to feel that time is lasting longer compared to doing the same
tasks in built-up areas.

She was
very grateful that he came to help her. Joe just smiled as he put the flat tire in the trunk (后备箱).
“How much do I owe you?” the lady asked, then adding that any amount would be all right. Joe, however,
rejected the payment. “You don’t owe me a thing. I’m only passing through. Someone once helped me out. Just the
way I’m helping you. If you want to pay me back, please pay it forward. Don’t let the chain (链条;连续) of love
end with you.” Joe responded. He waited until the old lady had started her car and driven off. It had been a cold and
depressing day, but Joe felt joyful as he set off for home.

【 答 案 】 A few miles down the road the lady saw a small cafe. She went in to grab a bite to eat. It was a
dirty-looking restaurant. The lady noticed the waitress was nearly eight months pregnant, but she always had a
sweet smile. After the meal, she paid with a one hundred dollar bill. The waitress quickly went to get change, but
the old lady had slipped right out of the door by the time she came back. The waitress wondered where the lady
could be. Then she noticed something written on the napkin,“You don't owe me anything. Someone once helped
me out the way I'm helping you. If you really want to pay me back, here is what you do: Do not let this chain of
love end with you.” Under the napkin were four more $100 bills. Totally touched, she failed to utter a single word,
tears blurring her eyes.
There were tables to clear and people to serve, but the pregnant waitress felt a rush of warmth. That night
when she got home from work and climbed into bed, she was thinking about the money and what the lady had
written. How could the lady have known how much she and her husband needed? With the baby due next month, it
was going to be hard. She knew how worried her husband was, and as he lay sleeping next to her, she gave him a
soft kiss and whispered soft and low, “Everything is going to be all right”. It is then that the waitress decided to
pass the chain of love on.
