◆What if a student does not pass a course?
If a student does not achieve a passing grade, the following steps are recommended:
The student should schedule a meeting with their Cornerstone academic advisor.
The advisor can provide guidance, which may include exploring different learning
strategies, retaking the course, or selecting an alternative course to fulfill graduation requirements.

When my mother passed away a few years ago, my father was left alone in the large house they had shared for 50 years. Without her to watch out for him, he was worried about who would find him and help if“something happened”.
My sister and I live in other states, so we hit on the idea that Dad could email us every morning when he awoke. Then “the Morning Report” was born.
He’s usually up by the crack of dawn, and his half a dozen or so sentences are waiting for
me in my inbox when I wake up. If there’s no email, I call him, or my sister does, to make sure
everything is fine. The reports have become more than an everyday check though; they’re a sort of diary, a catalyst (催化剂) for more extended conversations, and source of insight into his life.
Through these emails, Dad tells us about his routines. He might be heading to the grocery
store for bananas, going to his cardiac-rehab (心脏康复) exercise class, or having lunch with friends. Recently he told us, “I’ve climbed halfway up Mount Washington!” Given his age and distance from New Hampshire, such a hike had been unlikely.
Each email closes with “All my love, Dad.” When my mother was alive, that feeling was
normally reserved for her. Now that she is gone, he shares those feelings and his experiences with us. For me, what started as a simple security measure has spawned deeper closeness.
I’m grateful my father is still able to manage his computer and the Internet. I know the day will come when he’ll no longer be able to write the reports, and we’ll have to find other ways to

A new study has found that breathing does more than just move air in and out of your lungs
— it could even be used to identify who you are. Scientists at Israel’s Weizmann Institute of
Science discovered that each person has a distinct breathing pattern, known as a nasal (鼻的)
breathing “fingerprint”, a unique pattern that reveals clues about a person’s physical and mental health. Notably, brain scientist Timna Soroka shared, “We were able to identify differences
between less depressed and non-depressed individuals.”
The researchers originally set out to better understand how our sense of smell works. In
humans, the brain processes smell during inhalation (吸入), and this close connection between the brain and breathing led the team to wonder: could our breathing patterns reflect the way our brains are wired — and be unique to each of us? To explore this question, they developed a lightweight, wearable device that tracks nasal airflow continuously for 24 hours.
The study, published in the journal Current Biology, tested 100 healthy young adults as they went about their regular routines — running, studying, resting, and more. The results showed
breathing patterns can identify individuals with 96.8 percent accuracy. “I thought it would be
really hard to identify someone because everyone is doing different things,” said Soroka. “But it turns out their breathing patterns were remarkably distinct!”
Beyond individual identification, the study also found clear links between breathing
patterns and body mass index (BMI), sleep-wake cycles, and mental health traits such as anxiety and depression. For example, people who scored higher on anxiety tests tended to have shorter inhalation periods. Importantly, the researchers noted that they merely know there is an
association between breathing and mood, but they haven’t figured out the cause-and-effect direction — whether feeling anxious changes breathing, or a certain breathing pattern causes anxiety. If the latter is true, changing how we breathe could potentially improve mood.
However, the current device has drawbacks: it uses soft tubes under the nose that can be
uncomfortable to wear and may slip during sleep, and it doesn’t track mouth breathing. The team is working on improving the device and further exploring the breathing-mood connection to
unlock more practical applications.

A recent MIT study provides convincing scientific evidence for this claim. Researchers
used wearable brain scanners to compare students who wrote essays independently with those
using AI assistance. The findings were clear: AI-assisted writers “consistently underperformed at brain, verbal, and behavioural levels”. They demonstrated that we need to write in order to think deeply.
This research emerges at a critical historical moment for literacy. Childhood reading has reached record lows, with nearly half of British adults not reading a single book last year. Adult literacy is declining or making no progress across most OECD countries. Notably, average IQs have begun to decline since the 1980s, along with reasoning and problem-solving abilities — a trend that is unlikely to be random.
Walter Ong’s influential work “Orality and Literacy” clarifies why writing is essential. He argued that literacy enabled Ancient Greece’s intellectual revolution. Oral cultures must “think
memorable thoughts”, relying on rhyme, emotion, and cliché (陈词滥调) to preserve knowledge. Writing, by contrast, allows for precise, complex statements that can be examined, reviewed, and
developed into logical arguments.
In our digital age, no technology has surpassed the complicated architecture of the book. While the internet offers fragmented (碎片化的) information, books provide rich context and sustained logical connections. Reading is an active process that demands engagement and
