My first year of high school is a journey of self-discovery, mixed with challenges, growth, and new-found
strength. Looking back, the journey taught me that true learning is not just about grades, but about building a
refreshed self.
Like many, I was stressed at the start. The change from junior high was hard. I felt lost even after doing the
homework and attending classes. My classmates seemed miles ahead, and the knowledge felt like an impossible
mountain. I spent nights questioning my own abilities. There came a moment that changed everything — a senior
said to me, “Don’t use ‘intelligence’ as an excuse; most exams test your understanding and application of
knowledge, not IQ”. This simple wisdom changed my focus from self-doubt to actionable steps.
I stopped following every online study method and began forming my own system. Instead of colorful, useless
notes, I focused on “real learning”. I discovered the power of a well-kept mistake notebook, not for collecting every
error, but for thoughtfully reviewing them weekly. Slowly, my fragmented (碎片化的) knowledge started to form a
clear map. Before big tests, making sure I knew the key points turned my fear into calm confidence.
Beyond schoolwork, I learned to protect my inner peace. I kept my love for basketball, which became my
shelter and taught me teamwork. I understood that we don’t have to fill every minute with study, but should make
every minute of study count. Balancing work and rest was the key to keeping my drive. Now, I step into my second
year not just with better grades, but with a clearer mind, a stronger spirit, and a light guiding my own path forward.
4. How did the author feel when first attending high school
A. Excited. B. Relaxed. C. Anxious. D. Relieved.
5. What change did the author make in learning according to paragraph 3
A. Taking colorful and detailed notes.
B. Building a personal learning system.
C. Following more online study methods.
D. Collecting every mistake in a notebook.
6. How did the author manage his time according to paragraph 4
A. By giving up basketball. B. By making study time count.
C. By following a fixed study plan. D. By using online study tools.
7. What can be the best title for the text
A. My First Year in High School: Losing Confidence.
B. My First Year in High School: Expecting Challenges.
C. My First Year in High School: Choosing My Favorites.
D. My First Year in High School: Finding My Own Light.
C
What can a tiny corn insect teach us about designing unbreakable materials The answer lies in the remarkable
research on a new type of super-strong hydro-gel (水凝胶) inspired by the Asian corn borer, a common insect also
known as the maize stem borer.
Scientists have always admired how nature creates tough materials from simple things. The Asian corn borer
is a perfect example. Its head can stand repeated, powerful hits as it digs through hard corn plants. Researchers
discovered that this ability comes from a special structure (结构) inside the insect’s head. This clever design helps
to quickly spread out and take in force from any hit.
By copying this natural structure, a research team successfully created a new hydro-gel in the lab. The results
were very surprising. Tests showed this new gel has a shock toughness of about 23,534 joules per square meter.
This performance is over 1,000 times better than that of traditional hydro-gels.
The team didn’t stop at the lab test. To prove its real-world value, they coated the protective outer part of a
drone (无人机) with this hydro-gel and flew it in a test area under challenging conditions. The drone equipped with
the gel only shook briefly after being hit and kept flying well with no damage. On the other hand, a drone without
the coating crashed and was damaged after being hit.
This breakthrough offers a new way of designing next-generation materials. It shows great promise for
applications like smart farming equipment, robots, and protective material for electronic sensors, where standing
repeated shocks is important.
8. What enables the Asian corn borer’s head to stand repeated hits
A. Its tough surface. B. Its large size.
C. Its unique shape. D. Its special structure.
9. Why are numbers listed in paragraph 3
A. To prove the advantage of the new gel.
B. To present how hard it is to produce the new gel.
C. To show the differences between traditional and new gels.
D. To highlight the importance of copying natural structures.
10. How did scientists confirm the effectiveness of the new hydro-gel
A. They built a tiny robot with it.
B. They implanted it into corn plants.
C. They carried out crash tests using drones with it.
D They used it to create a new type of safety equipment.
11. What is the author’s attitude towards the new finding
A. Uncertain. B. Supportive. C. Uninterested. D. Doubtful.
D
For many years, creating a sense of belonging has been a major goal for universities and colleges that want to
make all of their students feel included. However, a recent study that focuses on minoritized ethnic (少数民族的)
students in UK higher education suggests this might not be enough. Researchers now advise a more effective goal:
helping students feel they matter and build trust.
The sense of belonging is widely used but can be vague. It often requires students to fit into the university
culture but fails to tell them how. In comparison, mattering means feeling that other people pay attention to you,
care about you and even recognize your value as a person. For many students from minority backgrounds, feeling
they matter in their everyday communication with teachers and fellow students is more important than feeling that
they belong to the university or college as a whole.
This feeling of mattering is an important step toward building trust. Trust means having confidence in the
university’s or college’s fairness and support. The study found that when universities or colleges actively work to
show they value each student, it builds the trust necessary for a truly inclusive environment. This way changes the
responsibility — it’s not just students who must try to fit in, but universities and colleges that must prove they are
trustworthy.
The findings call for a change in how universities or colleges support diversity (多元化). It is not enough to
just build a sense of belonging. Universities or colleges should actively help students feel valued and build trust,
creating a more supportive learning environment for everyone. And that is what makes a big difference in students’
academic (学业的) success.
12. What is the main argument in the text
A. Universities should quit the belonging goal.
B. Building student-university trust is impossible.
C. Mattering and trust work better than belonging.
D Minority students struggle to belong at university.
13. What does the underlined word “vague” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Unclear. B. Popular. C. Simple. D. Effective.
14. How does “mattering” differ from “belonging”
A. Mattering asks universities to change.
B. Mattering has been universities’ main focus.
C. Mattering is easier for universities to achieve.
D. Mattering relates mainly to school performance.
15. What does the last paragraph focus on
A. How academic success depends on student trust.
B. How mattering differs from belonging in practice.
C. Why belonging matters less than academic success.
D. Why universities should rethink their diversity efforts.

Earthquake Survival Guide: Drop, Cover, and Hold On
An earthquake strikes without warning. In moments, the ground shakes powerfully, objects fall, and buildings
may break down. Unlike preparing for a known event, you must act immediately based on where you are.
____16____ This guide explains the simple, life-saving actions to take.
If You Are Indoors: Stay and Shelter

move to a wall away from windows. After that, hold on to your shelter with one hand; be ready to move with it
until the shaking stops.
If You Are Outdoors: Find an Open Space
Move quickly away from buildings, streetlights, power lines, and overpasses. ____18____ The greatest danger
is from broken-down walls, falling bricks, and broken glass. Once in an open area, drop down and stay there until
the shaking stops.
If You Are in a Crowded Public Place: Avoid Fear
Do not rush for the exits. Stay where you are, drop, and take cover if possible. Protect your head and neck with
your arms. ____19____ Watch out for falling light objects or display shelves.
After the Shaking Stops: Act Carefully
Check yourself and others for injuries. Put on comfortable and proper shoes to protect your feet from broken
glass. Expect aftershocks. When you leave a building, use stairs, not lifts. Once outside, move to your pre-planned
family meeting point. ____20____ Listen to the radio for official information and instructions.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
For years, the old date tree stood between my house and Mr. Henderson’s. Its thick branches gave shade (树荫)
to both of our backyards. Last spring, a heavy storm hit. Several large branches broke and hung dangerously over
my kids’ new playroom. I knew something had to be done.
I went to see Mr. Henderson, my elderly neighbor. I suggested we share the cost to have the tree cut or
removed for safety. To my surprise, he became very unhappy. “I like that tree,” he said, his voice shaking. “Not one
branch will be touched.” I tried to explain the danger, but he turned and walked inside.
Feeling worried, I decided to take action myself. The next week, when Mr. Henderson went to see a doctor, I
called a tree service. The workers came with a truck. They didn’t remove the whole tree, but they cut off every
branch that hung over my side, including the dangerous ones above the playroom. The tree looked uneven (参差不
齐的), but I felt it was necessary.
When Mr. Henderson returned, I heard loud angry shouts from his house. After that, the friendly waves
between us stopped. We no longer had comfortable chats at our doors. The silence was uncomfortable. I told myself
I had the right to protect my family’s safety, but seeing the unbalanced tree and feeling the coldness from next door
troubled me. Months passed like this.
One afternoon, while cleaning my yard, I found an old baseball in the leaves. Its color was gone. The name
“Henderson” was written on it in unclear ink (墨水). I suddenly remembered something. Mr. Henderson’s son, who
used to play catch with his father under that very tree, passed away many years ago. A sharp understanding hit me.
I was in my garden when I saw Mr. Henderson in his backyard. He was cutting leaves slowly, his movements
heavy. The baseball felt heavy in my hand.
注意:1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I took a deep breath, “Mr. Henderson, I’m so sorry for cutting the branches.”

D. Doubtful.
【答案】8. D 9. A 10. C 11. B

Do not run outside during the shaking. You are much more likely to be injured by falling bricks, glass, or other
objects. Immediately drop onto your hands and knees. This position prevents you from being knocked down and
allows you to crawl (爬行) to shelter.
____17____ Get under a hard table or desk if one is nearby. If there is no shelter, get down on your knees and
move to a wall away from windows.
A. Try to stay awake as long as possible.
B. The safest place during an earthquake is usually an open area.
C. Get instructions from authorities but avoid using phones immediately.

2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

【答案】
I took a deep breath, “Mr. Henderson, I’m so sorry for cutting the branches.” I held out the old baseball, my
voice soft with regret. “I found this and realized what the tree meant to you and your son. I only thought about
safety, not your feelings. That was selfish.” He stared at the ball, his eyes wet. For a moment, he said nothing, then
his shoulders relaxed. “I should have told you why it mattered,” he whispered. The tension between us finally lifted.
Suddenly it hit me that maybe I could plant a new tree to say sorry. I told him I wanted to plant a young date
tree between our yards, one we could care for together. A small smile appeared on his face. The next weekend, we
worked side by side, digging and planting. As we watered the little tree, the cold silence was gone. The new tree
was small, but it grew friendship again, shading both our hearts as well as our yards.
