My name is Alice. Early last year, I was troubled by an anxiety that crippled (削弱) my ability to do anything.
I felt like a storm cloud hung over me. For almost a year I struggled on, constantly staring at this wall that faced me.
My perfectionist tendencies were the main root of this: I wanted to be perfect at whatever I did, which obviously in
life is not possible, but it consumed me.
One day, I attended a presentation by wildlife conservationist Grant Brown at my high school. His
presentation not only awed and inspired me, but also helped emerge an inner desire to make a difference in the
world. I joined a pre-presentation dinner with him and that smaller setting allowed me to slowly build up my
courage to speak one-on-one with him — an idea that had seemed completely impossible. This first contact was
where my story began.
A month later, Brown invited me to attend the World Youth Wildlife Conference. Looking back, I now see that
this would be the first in a series of timely opportunities that my old self would have let pass, but that this new and
more confident Alice enthusiastically seized. Shortly after I received his invitation, applications to join the Youth
for Nature and the Youth for Planet groups were sent around through my high school. I decided to commit to
completing the applications, and soon I was a part of a growing global team of young people working to protect
nature. Each of these new steps continued to grow my confidence.
51327059213852693670601091014833609775190768985284670554000409308465I am writing this just six months since my journey began and I’ve realized that my biggest obstacle (障碍) this
whole time was myself. It was that voice in the back of my head telling me that one phrase that has stopped so
many people from reaching their potential: I can’t. They say good things come to those who wait; I say: grab every
opportunity with everything you have and be impatient. After all, nature does not require our patience, but our
action.
4. What was the main cause for Alice’s anxiety?
A Her inability to act her age. B. Her habit of consumption.
C. Her lack of inspiration. D. Her desire to be perfect.
5. How did Grant Brown’s presentation influence Alice?
A. She tasted the sweetness of friendship. B. She decided to do something for nature.
C. She learned about the harm of desire. D. She built up her courage to speak up.
6. The activities Alice joined in helped her to become more ________.
A. intelligent B. innovative C. confident D. critical
7. What can we learn from this passage?
A. Action is worry’s worst enemy. B. Practice makes perfect.
C. Patience is a cure of anxiety. D. Everything comes to those who wait.
C
Over the past couple of weeks, I have had the privilege to visit the Antarctic. We were on a small ship with
140 passengers. The West Antarctic Ice Sheet is where articles on climate change and human environmental
predation (掠夺) start to lose their readers. People don’t want to hear about the negative effects of climate change,
overpopulation, and environmental degradation. To me, at least, this remains a great mystery.
Given that we completely depend on this planet for our existence from the water we drink and the air we
breathe to the stability of land and oceans this deliberate detachment (故意脱离) from nature always struck me as
silly.
Is it really just about making money? Is it the inconvenience of changing our diets or habits? Is it ignorance,
intentional or not? I thought a lot about this.
We don’t need to go to the end of the world to experience nature. But we surround ourselves with the familiar,
the protective environment of our homes and cities, of our habits and choices. Everything else, such as stories from
51327059213852693670601091014833609775190-12700-12700faraway places, sounds just like that tales from faraway places that don’t concern us directly.
But even though the adventure group of 140 travelers was very heterogeneous, the reaction was the same: Awe
is the word that comes first to mind, and then beauty, harmony, and balance, as we witness the dynamical balance
of a complex living system with many codependent operating parts.
In 2009, Johan Rockstrom at the Stockholm Resilience Center introduced a framework for understanding the
nine planetary systems that sustain life on Earth. He identified their boundaries and tipping points, beyond which
collapse becomes unavoidable and unpredictable.
One of the sleeping giants, all now starting to awaken, is the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, which, if melted (融化),
could raise global sea levels by 10 feet, with serious consequences for coastal communities around the world.
8. What does the author think of human's separation from nature?
A. Acceptable. B. Wise C. Disappointing. D. Unreasonable.
9. What does the underlined word “heterogeneous” in paragraph 5probably mean?
A. Hopeful. B. Different. C. Interesting. D. Strange.
10. Why does the author go to the Antarctic?
A. To study a complex living system. B. To explore a less known continent.
C. To take unique pictures of the continent. D. To search for materials for writing an article.
11. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. The West Antarctic Ice Sheet is melting rapidly.
B. Coastal communities are unaffected by sea level rise.
C. The author is unconcerned about the melting of the ice sheet.
D. The consequences of the ice sheet melting are terrible.
D
Protecting young athletes from overheating is important. However, many youth-sports groups do not even have
rules to protect players from high heat. Plus, some coaches and parents don't want to cancel or change games or
practices. And kids may not want to admit when they need a break, for fear of seeming weak or letting down their
team.
That can put young athletes in a dangerous spot.Better awareness among players, coaches and parents about
heat's dangers could lead to better protections. Luckily, there are some simple strategies that both athletes and
sports organizations can use to ward off heat illness.
Prevention is the best medicine. Water is key to controlling body temperature, which helps you sweat. If you’
51327059213852693670601091014833609775190re dehydrated (脱水的), your body will hold onto the water it has rather than sweating it away. And that makes it
harder to cool off and easier to get heat illness.
Water is the best thing to drink. But when your body sweats, you also lose salt. Salt helps the body stay
hydrated. It also keeps minerals in your body balanced so that muscles and nerves can work properly. Electrolyte
(电解质) sports drinks can help replace that key nutrient.
Schools, sports leagues and coaches can also help protect players when it's hot by easing them into games and
practices. It takes at least three days in a row of hot or warmer-than-usual temperatures for the body to start
adapting.
In the meantime, it's important for athletes to listen to their own bodies. They also need to speak up when they
need breaks. It may be hard to put your health first during the heat of competition, or when you're trying to make a
team or even just having fun playing a game you love. But ignoring the risk of heat sickness is dangerous and it can
be deadly.
12. Which of the following is a symptom of dehydration?
A. One feels very cold suddenly. B. One wants to drink electrolyte water.
C. One's body almost stops sweating. D. One's body stops holding onto water.
13. What's the use of electrolyte sports drinks according to the text?
A. Preventing your body losing salt. B. Adding on nutritional substances.
C. Helping relieve your nervousness. D. Enabling you to stand high temperature.
14. What is the author's advice for athletes in competitions?
A. Listening to their coaches. B. Making their teammates happy.
C. Promoting the competitive spirit. D. Minding their physical condition.
15. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Whether to rest when feeling tired B. What to mind when having sports
C. How to be heat-safe when playing sports D. Whom to obey when feeling thirsty

The Spring Festival celebrations were in full swing at the crowded temple fair. Colorful lanterns hung above
the streets, and the air was filled with the aroma of fried dumplings and sweet candied fruits. Among the joyful
crowd was a little boy named Leo, a 7-year-old American visiting China with his parents. Clutching a rabbit-shaped
lantern, he stared in awe at the dragon dancers twisting through the crowd.
Suddenly, a firecracker exploded nearby. Terrified, Leo dropped his lantern and rushed backward. When he
looked up, his parents were nowhere to be seen. The sea of strangers in red coats and furry hats swallowed his tiny
figure. Panic surged through him as he pushed through the crowd, tears streaming down his face.
Meanwhile, Leo’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carter, realized their son was missing. Madly, they searched the stalls
selling paper cuttings and calligraphy brushes, shouting his name. But their voices were drowned out by the drums
and laughter.
Just as despair began to set in, a young volunteer in a bright yellow vest noticed Leo crying by a sugar
painting stand. The volunteer, a girl named Wenwen, knelt down in front of Leo. She noticed his tear-streaked face
and the fear in his eyes. “Hey, little boy, are you lost?” she asked gently in English, trying to hide her own concern.
Leo took a few steps back, his heart pounding. He had been warned by his parents about strangers, and although
Wenwen seemed kind, he was still cautious. “My mommy and daddy...” he hesitated, looking around desperately.

I am writing this just six months since my journey began and I’ve realized that my biggest obstacle (障碍) this
whole time was myself.

Everything else, such as stories from
faraway places, sounds just like that tales from faraway places that don’t concern us directly.

If you’
re dehydrated (脱水的), your body will hold onto the water it has rather than sweating it away.

【答案】
Wenwen understood the situation immediately. She showed him her volunteer badge. And she said, “I work
here to help people like you. Do you remember where you last saw them?” Leo hesitated for a moment but then
slowly nodded. He pointed towards the direction of the dragon dance area. Wenwen took his small hand, and Leo
tensed up at first. But Wenwen’s warm and reassuring grip made him feel a little more secure. Leo gradually
relaxed and even managed to give her a small smile. They passed by stalls of traditional handicrafts and folk art,
and Wenwen used her knowledge to explain the meanings behind each item, making Leo feel more connected to
the place.
Wenwen kept talking to him to distract him from his fear. Finally, they arrived at the spot where Leo had lost
sight of his parents. And there, Mr. and Mrs. Carter were waiting anxiously. When they saw Leo, they rushed
towards him, their eyes filled with relief and gratitude. “Thank you so much, Wenwen,” Mrs. Carter said, hugging
Leo tightly. Leo looked up at Wenwen, and this time, his eyes were full of trust and thankfulness. The experience
had turned a scary situation into a memorable lesson about kindness and the power of human connection.
