When I was six, a new family moved into the house next door. There was a girl, Frances, who was about my age. We became best friends soon. I was too young to notice what was really going on in her life, but my mother did.
Mom noticed that Frances never invited anyone into the rooms they lived in. Her mother went off to work very early in the morning and came back looking very tired. And her two older brothers wore dirty clothes and were never at home. Frances was always hungry, and her clothes were often too small.
Mom never mentioned anything to me. But she once asked, “Would you mind if I give Frances some of your clothes ” I agreed. Frances seemed very thrilled.
Mom began to spend more time with Frances and me. She and I had always done kitchen jobs together, but now the three of us were making biscuits and washing up together. Frances was always willing to help, as long as Mom was there. And sometimes they would just sit together and talk while I was off doing something else.
That routine (日常事物) continued until we were both teenagers. But then her mother decided they were moving back to Ireland. We promised to write to each other.
One day, my mom called to say that a letter from Frances had arrived. “When I was four, my father died. My mother tried to make money. She ignored me. Your mom saved me. Without her love and attention, I would never have survived (渡过难关) my childhood. I have used your mother’s example as my guide to care for people around me.”
My mother taught me many things, but this was her most valuable lesson. Watching her example and seeing the life-changing results were powerful. We will never know how or when our acts of kindness will influence others, but it’s always better to try.
24. What do we know about Frances’ family from Paragraph 2
A. They were unhappy to come to a new place. B. They tried hard to avoid their neighbors.
C. They cared little about each other. D. They lived a very difficult life.
25. What does the underlined word “thrilled” in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Proud. B. Excited. C. Calm. D. Confident.
26. What does the author try to show through the fourth paragraph
A. Frances was a good helper. B. Frances was used to the routine.
C. Frances got on well with the author’s mom. D. Frances was good at doing kitchen jobs.
27. What can be the best title for the text
A. Teaching by example B. Lifelong friends
C. My mom’s life D. Being brave to try
C
Whether humanity expresses itself in paintings, books, movies, songs or any other creative media, art always finds its way back to the person who made it and their life stories. It is hard to define what “good” art is, but to me, it means anything that somebody created with the intention of representing something that matters to them.
The one thing that I will never call “art”, however, is anything that was made with artificial intelligence.
Take painting for example. Most of the well-known painters of the past 200 years drew on the lives they lived to make their art. Claude Monet, for example, was inspired by the water garden that he would see daily at his estate (房产) in Normandy, France. This series included some of his most famous works made in the impressionism style, which focuses on creating the illusion (幻觉) of movement to represent humanity.
The point is that painters drew on the places they lived in and their views of life to create art. They used their understanding of style, color and movement to create lovely images and represent what mattered to them. That is something that AI is unable to do. The AI program can only generate an image based on a collection of images from the websites. It cannot draw on its own experience at all.
Another common use of AI programs is to have them generate the written word. For me, there is no heart or soul in what the AI produces. The product requires no thought or effort, both of which are key parts of meaningful written work. Author Nora Roberts, who has had 68 of her romance novels appear on The New York Times bestseller list, once said that you have to love the written word to be capable of good writing. AI cannot feel emotions and love what it writes. Therefore, how could it ever create good writing
The beautiful thing about life is that we all go through it differently, and art has the ability to bring us together with our unique experiences. Neither can AI replicate (复制) that, nor should we make it try.
28. What is considered essential for creating meaningful art
A. Artistic skills. B. Unique styles of art. C. Personal experiences. D. Advanced technologies.
29. Why does the author mention Monet’s artworks
A. To highlight Monet’s talent for art. B. To give an example of genuine art.
C. To trace the beginnings of impressionism. D. To describe famous painting techniques.
30. What is lacking in AI-produced writing
A. Accuracy and detail. B. Depth and persuasion.
C. Structure and balance. D. Emotion and passion.
31. What does the author wish to achieve in the text
A. To criticize writers’ dependence on AI. B. To show AI’s value in creative work.
C. To discourage the use of AI in art. D. To reveal AI’s importance to artists.
D
Emperor penguins are the largest penguins on Earth. Each adult is over a meter tall, and can weigh up to 40 kilograms.
For many months each year, emperor penguins live near the sea in large groups. However, the weather gets colder in May, and ice covers large areas of ocean. Each group moves many kilometers from the water. There, each mother penguin lays just a single egg. Then all the hungry mothers walk back to the ocean to find food. The father penguins put their eggs on top of their feet. They cover the eggs with a special piece of skin called the brood pouch.
For two months, the father penguins protect the eggs and keep them warm. They do this through some of the coldest weather conditions on Earth. By July, it is winter in Antarctica. Most other animals leave for warmer places, but the father penguins stay.
By August each mother penguin returns just in time to see her baby hatch. The chick is then moved to her brood pouch. This can be difficult. If the chick falls, it can freeze quickly. The penguin parents must be very careful. Once the chick has been moved, the father penguin can go back to the ocean to find food.
Over the next few months, penguin parents take turns going to the ocean for food. They each make the trip several times, bringing back food for the chick. The chick is always hungry and grows rapidly.
By December winter is ending. The chick can now live on its own. Soon it enters the water for the first time. It will swim and eat until next April, and then return. After a few more years, it, too, will start its own family.
32. What do father penguins do after the mother penguins lay eggs
A. Build nests to keep the eggs warm. B. Cover the eggs with their whole body.
C. Take turns carrying the eggs to the sea. D. Hold the eggs on their feet with a skin pouch.
33. What will mother penguins do after returning in August
A. Hatch the egg in the brood pouch. B. Move the chick to her brood pouch.
C. Let the father penguins rest immediately. D. Feed the chick with food from the ocean.
34. According to the text, when can the penguin chick begin to live on its own
A. After the spring. B. Before the summer.
C. During the fall. D. After the winter.
35. What can be the title of the text
A. How Emperor Penguin Parents Lay Their Eggs
B. The Life Cycle of Emperor Penguins in Antarctica
C. Surviving the Cold: Emperor Penguins’ Winter Habits
D. From Ocean to Land: Where Emperor Penguins Lay Eggs

A Pleasant Surprise
It was one week before Christmas and my house was filled with festive cheer. The only thing I hoped to get from my Christmas wish list was a puppy (小狗). However, I did not want to get my hopes up, as I knew neither of my parents liked the thought of having a puppy around the house and all that came with it.
Every time I begged for a puppy, my parents would say, “It is a lot of responsibilities, and you will have to clean up after it, give it baths, feed it regularly and walk it.”
I knew the responsibilities and was ready to take them on. Unfortunately, even with my enthusiasm (热情) and determination, my parents still disagreed to get me a puppy.
“Oh honey, pick something else instead. There are so many toys that you can pick,” my parents responded as usual. As expected, I thought, giving a resigned sigh (无奈的叹息). For the rest of the evening, I decorated the Christmas tree as my parents hung some stockings. That night, I went to sleep with the hope that my dream would ever come true.
My alarm clock woke me up. “Oh my goodness, it is finally Christmas day!” I shouted excitedly and rushed down the stairs to the living room.
“Good morning, Bella!” both my parents chatted with huge smiles on their faces that were brighter than usual. My curiosity was inspired and many questions rushed into my mind. Just then, I caught my father smiling at my mother as if they had a secret plan and walking out of the door. When I asked my mother where my father had gone, she simply said that he had gone to pick something up. I grew confused.
