Lin Yutang’s The Importance of Living is a humorous and philosophical (哲学的 ) exploration of the art of
living. The book is a reflection of Lin Yutang’s view that true happiness can only be found in the small pleasures of
everyday life. In the book, he challenges traditional concepts of success and happiness, arguing that the pursuit of
wealth and fame can lead to a life of stress and unhappiness. Instead, he encourages readers to embrace their own
unique habits and talents, and to find joy and meaning in their everyday experiences.
The book is divided into several sections, each of which explores a different aspect of the art of living. In the
section “Sensations”, for example, Lin Yutang describes the pleasure of eating, drinking, and sleeping, and he
encourages readers to take time to enjoy these experiences. He writes, “The Chinese are gastronomes (美食家).
They love to eat, and they eat with enthusiasm.” In the section “Freedom, Lin Yutang explores the importance of
individuality and creativity in living a satisfying life. He writes, “The important thing is not what we do, but how
we do it. The important thing is not what we have, but how we use it.”
Throughout the book, Lin Yutang’s unique brand of humor is evident. He uses wit to comment on social and
political issues, and to challenge traditional values and customs. For example, he writes, “Some Chinese are
gossipers (说闲话者). They love to talk about each other, and they talk with enjoyment.” This observation reflects
his belief that gossip can be harmless amusement, and that it can even bring people together.
Overall, The Importance of Living is an interesting read. Lin Yutang’s unique sense of humor and insight (洞
察力 ) make it a pleasure to read, and his philosophy of life is both inspiring and practical. Lin Yutang’s wit,
wisdom, and creativity are fully presented, which continue to attract readers around the world today.

Have you ever stared at Vincent van Gogh’s iconic painting The Starry Night and felt like you could almost
see the sky moving Well, it turns out that your eyes weren’t playing tricks on you. A team of researchers has
discovered that the swirling (旋动 ) patterns in van Gogh’s masterpiece actually mirror real-world atmospheric
turbulence (湍流) with surprising accuracy!
The researchers used some clever techniques to analyze van Gogh’s brushstrokes. They treated the varying
brightness of the paint colors as a symbol for the energy of physical movement in the atmosphere. What they found
was astonishing. The patterns in The Starry Night correspond to two important principles in fluid dynamics:
Kolmogorov’s law and Batchelor’s scaling. Don’t worry if these terms sound abstruse — let’s break them down.
Kolmogorov’s law describes how energy moves from larger to smaller scales in turbulent flows. Imagine a big
swirl breaking down into smaller and smaller ones. This is what happens in the atmosphere, oceans... and
amazingly, it’s what van Gogh’s work seems to represent. Batchelor’s scaling, on the other hand, deals with how
small-scale turbulence behaves. The researchers found that the fine details in van Gogh’s brushstrokes match this
principle, which describes how substances like heat or pollutants spread in a turbulent fluid.
Finding both of these patterns in one system is rare, which makes this discovery even more exciting. “It
reveals a deep understanding of natural phenomena. Van Gogh’s precise representation of turbulence might be from
studying the movement of clouds and the atmosphere or an inborn sense of how to capture the dynamism of the
sky,” says Yongxiang Huang, the study’s lead author. The fact that an artist in the 19th century could capture these
complex dynamics (动力 ) so accurately is mind-blowing. This research opens up exciting possibilities for the
crossing of art and science. It shows that beauty and scientific accuracy aren’t mutually exclusive — they might
be more closely linked than we realize.
So, the next time you look at The Starry Night, remember that you’re not just seeing a beautiful painting. You’
re witnessing a snapshot of the swirling, turbulent dance of the atmosphere.
28. Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “abstruse” in paragraph 2
A. Inappropriate. B. Incomprehensible. C. Inseparable. D. Inaccurate.
29.Which of the following best illustrates Kolmogorov’s law
A. B. C. D.
30. What is the purpose of paragraph 4
A. To stress the significance of the discovery.
B. To state the complexity of natural phenomena.
C. To reveal the limitations of the 19th century artists.
D. To praise van Gogh’s artistic skills over his scientific accuracy.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Van Gogh: A Pioneer of Turbulence Research
B. Van Gogh: A Talented Artist or A Natural Scientist
C. The Starry Night: Beauty Meets Scientific Precision
D. The Starry Night: Art Teaches Atmospheric Physics

A 2023 study by researchers at the University of Hong Kong investigated a phenomenon, examining how
loneliness and social anxiety correlate with the problematic use of conversational AI. They found that individuals
with social anxiety were more likely to use the technology in an addictive manner, with loneliness increasing this
tendency.
Renwen Zhang, Professor of the National University of Singapore, claims that many users find talking with AI
“friends” relieves loneliness and stress because the chatbots listen without ever criticizing or dismissing them and
are available 24/7, characteristics difficult to find in the real world. He assumed that people turn to conversational
AI as an escape from the discomfort of social interactions.
However, a study found that dependence on conversational AI can actually worsen social anxiety, which may
unintentionally lead to social withdrawal. A person with social anxiety, who lacks close relationships in the real
world, may start using a character (eg, AI chatbot) to share personal thoughts typically reserved for a close friend.
While this may start as a safe space, the growing dependency on AI for emotional closeness can deepen loneliness,
intensify social anxiety, and reduce the ability to build real-world connections. Since the system is not programmed
to deal with such personal troubles or understand the real-world impact of its responses, this reliance can lead to
harmful consequences.
Zhang discussed the limitations of current conversational AI in handling mental distress (痛苦 ). Because
conversational AI only reads the literal words, it misinterprets distress signals and fails to react appropriately.
Similarly, unlike trained professionals, some conversational AI cannot recognize the severity of mental unwellness.
It may reinforce negative thoughts and beliefs. Also, as AI is designed to maintain engagement, it may encourage
focusing on troubling issues without realizing them.
Undeniably, the emergence of conversational AI itself marks a leap in technological progress. Making
chatbots more empathetic can help make interactions more engaging, relatable, and comforting, but doing this may
pose several risks. It may discourage people from seeking real human connections, which will worsen loneliness or
reduce the importance of interpersonal relationships.
32. What makes socially anxious users feel at ease with chatbots
A. They connect like-minded people online.
B. They provide non-judgmental responses.
C. They generate texts in different languages
D. They replace the need for face-to-face communication.
33. Why did Zhang mention the limitation of conversational AI
A. to criticize developers for ignoring users’ mental health.
B to stress that reliance on AI may have undesired results.
C. to explain why AI fails to recognize the causes of mental distress.
D. to argue that AI should be further developed for emotional support.
34. What does the author suggest about making chatbots more empathetic
A. It is the only way to improve user engagement.
B. It will completely solve the problem of loneliness.
C. It has already been achieved by current technology.
D. It may bring both benefits and potential dangers.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. AI Friends: Always Give the Right Advice
B. AI Friends: Know You Better Than You Do
C. AI Companionship: Comfort or Social Trap
D. AI Companionship: Time Bank or Time Debt

Lisa Sweeney is a 32-year-old mail carrier in Staten Island, New York. Four months ago, she noticed that
something wasn’t right at one of the homes on her route. It was her quick action that made all the difference.
One afternoon in August, an old woman named Marie Boyer, who lived alone, fell at the foot of the stairs in
her home. She was just lying unconscious on the floor.
The next afternoon, her regular mail carrier, Lisa Sweeney, passed by and noticed something unusual. Though
she and Marie hadn’t had much conversation over the years, Lisa knew her habits. She was surprised not to see
Marie working in her garden, because she usually spent most afternoons there when the weather was fine.
I just had a feeling in my heart that Marie was inside. “Lisa recalls. She went straight round to the back of the
house, thinking that the old woman might be in the kitchen, but she didn’t find anybody there. Puzzled, Lisa
returned to the front of the house and knocked bard on the door. There was no answer. She thought that this was
very strange, so she knocked on a neighbor’s door, but he’d been away on vacation and arrived home just a short
time before so he didn’t know anything. Just then Lisa noted that Mane’s bottle of milk, which was delivered early
in the morning, was still on the doorstep. It was a clear warning sign.
