Standing ankle-deep in water between two bare cottonwood trees on a hot spring day,eight-year-old Anthony Waddle was in his element. His attention was entirely absorbed by the attempt to net tadpoles (蝌蚪) swimming in a lake in the vast Mojave desert.“I wanted to catch as many as I could in my net, just to watch them change from tadpoles into frogs,” he says, recalling that moment.
Just as tadpoles turn into frogs, Waddle has been through a profound change of his own.He has gone from being a child obsessively holding a notebook full of little-known facts about animals to becoming the first person in his family to get a PhD. Today, the 35-year-old is working in Australia to help save the species that fascinated him as a boy. Waddle is an award-winning conservation biologist on a mission to save frogs from the deadly chytrid fungus(壶菌), which has wiped out 90 species and puts more than 500 more at risk.
Frogs and other amphibians (两栖动物) play a critical role in the planetary ecosystem, consuming many insects that transport human diseases. Their skin is also considered an important potential source of new painkillers. The fungus infecting them is almost always deadly, and can rapidly destroy populations.
Waddle began a novel experiment to slow the march of the disease. They built frog saunas, rooms covered with simple greenhouse structures that heat up in the sun. Working out of his lab in Australia, he and a fellow researcher began experimenting with bricks for their perfect, frog-sized holes. Soon, stacks of bricks housing endangered green and golden bell frogs rose at the test site. They hoped that by raising frogs' body temperatures, the saunas would help resist the chytrid fungus—— which, like the flu, spreads widely in winter.
The experiment worked——— frogs that spent the winters warmer in their new shelters were less likely to fall prey to the fungus infection, which is temperature sensitive. They were also resistant when re-exposed. It was good news for frogs lucky enough to access these shelters, but Waddle wanted to look further, at solutions that could help save more amphibians at risk.
Now, one of his larger projects involves raising and vaccinating hundreds of green and golden bell frogs for release into the wild. But for the species can't be vaccinated, the team is experimenting with gene replacement to help support their reintegration.“Yesterday we were making transgenic frogs together, the first ever experiment to make a transgenic frog inAustralia,” Waddle says from his lab with excitement.“We can't just be carelessly slapping genes into frogs, but at the research level we should be investigating this cutting-edge strategy.” He says“we’ re going to start using these methods in the wild for conservation”.
The challenges do keep him up at night, he says———— but usually it's due to anticipation of possible solutions, rather than anxiety.“Usually if I can't sleep, it's something exciting,” he says.
28. What do we know about Waddle from the text
A. His childhood nterest shapes his career.
B. He often suffers from sleeping problems.
C. His experiment was conducted in the wilderness.
D. He developed a medicine for the fungus infection.
29. What is the main purpose of building frog saunas
A. To modify genes of frogs for better resistance.
B. To fight the disease by heating the frog rooms.
C. To protect endangered frogs from the winter flu.
D. To create a warmer living environment for frogs.
30. What can be inferred from the passage
A. Chytrid fungus is a great threat to amphibians.
B. Gene editing has helped frogs return to the wild.
C. Re-exposed frogs become more temperature-sensitive.
D. The sauna treatment has proven effective for numerous species.

Although separated by centuries and cultures, people find that Alasdair MacIntyre, one of the most influential philosophers of our time, and Aristotle, a famous Greek philosopher, offer remarkably convergent views on the way to live. It is not simply about personal satisfaction or material success +··+ her it's about the development of virtue and the formation of moral character by living your life in a community where people care about doing the right thing.
MacIntyre argues a good life is rooted in virtue, shaped by tradition, and embedded within a moral community. He explores how different traditions shape our understanding of rationality, arguing that moral inquiry must be rooted in historical and communal structures rather than in reasoning. Individuals do not simply invent their own moral systems: they inherit them, refine them and pass them on. Later MacIntyre stresses human dependence: our lives can be helpless and remain weak, so the qualities that let each person flourish——— truthfulness, reliability, willingness to give and receive care———— are exactly the virtues that hold weak lives together.
Aristotle paints a consistent picturo. He stat. a that man is by nature social and no individual can practise every excellence alone. Because human goods are manv, such as wisdom, courage and justice, a large community must cooperate so that different people represent different virtues and support one another. Character is formed through habituation: we become just by acting justly, brave by brave actions. Therefore, moral refinement is a gradual process, requiring discipline and education alongside active participation in society.
The two authors picture moral life as a lifelong climb without a final peak. MacIntyre argues the moral agent is an explorer who meets new dangers and temptations(诱惑), learning fresh dimensions of virtue at every stage. What courage means at twenty is not what it means at forty, and wisdom at sixty cannot be reduced to youthful lessons. Aristotle shares this open-ended striving: moral perfection lasts for a complete life, and the community and laws must sustain its guidance and education to prevent its members sink back into carelessness.Happiness is therefore not a prize awaiting at the end of the road; it is the very activity of striving toward virtue, learning and cooperating with fellow others on the same difficult mountain.
Human flourishing depends on virtues practised together, refined through shared stories and handed on in good repair. The good life is never a lonely achievement; it is the common work of hands helping one anotict up an endless slope, discovering new paths while the horizon keeps moving awa; into the future.

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,共10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。
When people find that they are having a hard time making new friends, they often blame their own awkwardness. 35 As a sociologist who studies how people connect, I' ve found that people's ability to make new friends doesn't come and go at random. Instead, it reflects the strength of what I call the“friendship market” they are in.
In a thriving friendship market, a majority of people in a particular setting are interested in“buying” or“selling” friendship. Consider first-year students arriving at college. New connections await at every corner. But we spend much of our lives in weaker friendship markets. For example, you move to a new city for work, and often find that people you meet there are not interested in forming new friendships. 36 Others already have fully formed friend groups.
But there's a key to finding new friendship markets: a shifting sense of self. We define ourselves through our relationships with friends. These connections help us construct our desired selves, who we are, and who we are becoming. The key, then, is not just to start an activity or join a club to meet new people. 37
To be clear, being aware of“friendship markets” does not mean that friendships are about buying and selling. They are not products you can simply throw away. But they are also not always readily available. 38 Even those with active social lives and healthy friendships benefit from new relationships that strengthen who they are. These connections have been proven to bring us joy, fulfill our basic need to connect and help us to live healthier, longer lives.
So the next time making new friends feels challenging, remember the structural role of friendship markets rather than blaming yourself. 39
A. It's to join one related to an identity you long to deepen.
B. Open friendship markets become harder to find in adulthood.
C. Actively seek new friendship markets rather than passively wait.
D. Even intentionally fitting in fails if a friendship market has closed.
E. Yet many could find the exact times when making friends seemed easier.
F. We' ve all felt much closer to someone when our identities change together.
G. You may find your people if you take a class not just for skills but for self-growth.
第三部分书面表达(共两节,32分)
第一节(共4小题;第40、41题各2分,第42题3分,第43题5分,共12分)
One January day in 1985, I was battling the clock. My college applications had to be postmarked by noon. The post office steps, which I hit at a run, were covered in ice. I fell over, sending applications flying everywhere. Flat on my back, I stared at the winter sky, thinking,“Why am I here ”
For me, this moment is the essence of the college application process. Once upon a time, applying to school was a physical experience, as cold and painful as life itself. It's somethingI remember while watching my son manage his application process today. For Elia, his battle will be fought on a computer screen and his rails will be smooth. Applications can be submitted to many schools at the same time. There will be no near-death experience on the ice.The changes to this process, like other changes brought by technology, have both improved and harmed our lives, making them much better and worse.
By 2010, nearly every college and applicant had gone online, with its innumerable conveniences: no corrections to make, no trips to the post office. You can apply everywhere at once. So what if another ritual, another important life experience, is lost
Responses still come in March and April, but now via email. Back in the day, we anxiously waited for the mail carrier, guessing acceptance or rejection from the weight of his bag. A trip to the mailbox could be full of strong emotions. The decision nowadays still means joy or despair, but the virtual nature of acceptance and rejection, with no evidence of a human hand, is a little deadening I mean, if it only happened online, did it even happen What's more, by vastly expanding the number of possible applications, the process minimizes the importance of each submission.
That's the feeling I get from online application. You don't pick a school because you love it. You love a school because you picked it.
40. What did applying to college mean to the author once
41. What does the author think of the changes of application process
42. Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
The author thinks online acceptance or rejection feels less real, because it lacks a human touch and weakens emotions.
43. What problem(s) do you think technology has brought us (In about 40 words)
