Last summer, I spent a week at my grandfather's house in a quiet town. On the first morning, I found him
practising calligraphy in his study. "Would you like to learn " he asked, handing me a brush. I nodded, thinking it
would be easy.
Grandfather started with the basics(基础 ). First, he showed me how to hold the brush straight and easily,
saying, "The brush is like a part of your mind." Next, we practised basic strokes on old newspapers. My lines were
shaky and messy, making me feel upset. Then, he taught me to write "永", which has eight basic strokes. After
many tries, I finally wrote one that looked right. "You are learning more than writing," he smiled.
As days passed, I felt calmer and more focused. On my last day, I wrote "耐" (patience). Though not perfect,
the lines were much better.
When I got home, my father said, "Your grandfather has taught you well." I finally understood: calligraphy
was like a mirror, teaching me that real strength comes from a cool head, not speed. It wasn't just a brush — it was
a way to understand myself better.

There has long been a heated discussion: Is it better to shower in the morning or at night Some say a morning
shower helps wake you up, while others believe a night shower can help you relax. As a microbiologist, I have a
clear answer.
Showering helps remove dirt, oil and sweat, keeping you clean and reducing body smell. Different from
popular ideas, sweat itself has no smell. The bad smell comes from bacteria (细菌) on your skin when they feed on
sweat.
Showering at night washes away sweat, oil and bacteria, so you leave less on your bed sheets. But you still
sweat at night, feeding bacteria. You may wake up a little smelly, and sheets get dirty again. Bacteria on sheets can
also return to your clean skin while you sleep. Besides, you lose dead skin cells (细胞) at night, and dust mites (螨)
eat them and produce waste, which may cause health problems.
Morning showers wash off night sweat, dead cells and bacteria from sheets. They leave you cleaner when
putting on fresh clothes and reduce sweat for bacteria. In this way, you stay clean and energetic longer during the
day.
Shower time is a personal choice, but I care about bacteria—the fewer. the better. Anyway, remember to wash
your sheets at least once a week, or the cleaning effect will be mostly lost.
6. What makes the body smell
A.The skin cells you lose at night. B.The sweat produced by the body.
C.The dust mites on your bed sheets. D.The bacteria eating sweat on the skin.
37 What can we infer about showering at night from paragraph 3
A.It might kill dust mites in the morning.
B.It stops you from losing dead skin cells.
C.It makes you sweat less when you sleep.
D.It helps keep bed sheets clean at the beginning.
38. What can we know from paragraph 4
A.Morning showers help you stay fresh longer.
B.Bacteria play a minor role in producing body smell.
C.Fresh clothes slow down the production of body smell.
D.Bed sheets help remove dead skin cells from your body.
39. What is the writer's attitude(态度) towards shower timing
A.He is uncertain about it. B.He thinks it unimportant.
C.He prefers morning showers. D.He recommends night showers.
40. What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Why Showers Keep Your Body Clean
B.How Showers Clear the Bedroom Danger
C.Bacteria or Sweat: The Cause of Body Smell
D.Morning or Night: The Shower Timing Debate
