Whether you are writing a business email or a long research essay, the dictionary can be a powerful tool to assist you in becoming a better writer in English.
You can use the main A—Z of the dictionary to help you:
Choose your words carefully. Many words in English have similar or related meanings, but they are used in different contexts or situations. Look carefully at the example sentences provided in the entries for words you want to use. If you need academic vocabulary, look for the AW symbol.
Combine words naturally and effectively. In English, certain pairs of words go together and sound natural to native speakers (for example, heavy rain) — and others do not (strong rain). Information on which words can be paired with one another can be found in the example sentences in the dictionary entries.
Become more flexible. Rather than repeating the same word or phrase many times in your work, try to find other ways to express your ideas. Look for SYN symbol to find synonyms (同义词) and also study the synonym notes. Look for word families and try using words in the same family that are different parts of speech (e.g., different, adjective and differ, verb).
Edit and check your work. You can use your dictionary to check any problem areas such as spelling, parts of speech, irregular forms, grammar, phrasal verbs, and prepositions.
In the following sections you will find examples of essays and practical types of writing that you can use as models for your own work. You will also find advice on planning, organizing and writing each type of text.

In first grade, I took a spelling test with the word "of" on it. O-F! Of! Every student that day spelled the word correctly except Malcolm, the slowest in the class. He had spelled the word U-V. "U-V!" I remember thinking "Geez, how silly is this kid " But as I sat there, I realized that spelling "of" with a U and a V made a lot more sense than with an O and an F, which were corresponding to sounds nothing to do with the word "of".
Why was this ever-so-simple word spelled in this completely illogical way The best answer I could come up with at the time was: That's just the way it is, that's what adults told me was the truth, and that's how I have to spell the word to get it right and be a good student. So I better just shut up, look smart, and use an O and an F.
I didn't know it then, but this little realization was my first brush with understanding of what indoctrination was. All of us in the class that day so quietly and without question accepted a truth because it was backed by authority and tradition. It was the rule, and the world would see Malcolm as silly, and not the spelling.
The spelling of "of" may not be a worthy battle to build a life around, but this memory helped me become aware of the fact that the world is a place that comes with a lot of strange rules that we often fail to question. As a teenager, I called these rules "visms".
Growing up, I recognized the presence of these visms in the expectations and assumptions pressed on me by my surroundings. Many of them are there for good reasons. Many are not. You don't have to follow all of them. I believe in the misspelling of the word "of" and the necessity for each generation to question the assumptions of the previous.
24. What did the author think of Malcolm's spelling afterwards
A. Reasonable. B. Childish. C. Creative. D. Casual.
25. What is the hidden reason for the author accepting the standard spelling
A. Desire to outsmart others. B. Preference for logical spelling.
C. Obedience to established rules. D. Determination to uphold the truth.
26. What does the term "visms" mainly refer to
A. Newly-generated creative concepts.
B. Widely-accepted illogical practices.
C. Intensely-debated spelling patterns.
D. Deeply-rooted childhood memories.
27. Which does the author try to advocate in the last paragraph
A. Exploring the unknown. B. Tolerating minor mistakes.
C. Developing critical thinking. D. Following the extraordinary

Berlin's East Side Gallery attracts millions of visitors each year. Tourists crowd before vibrant murals (壁画) painted after the Cold War, but few pause to consider what lies beneath the paint: an original section of the Berlin Wall. The art has become the attraction; the history it covers has faded into background. This pattern extends far beyond Berlin. Across the globe, old buildings fall for new developments. The logic seems unarguable: cities must grow, economies must expand. But what disappears when we erase the physical traces of our past
Urban historian Dolores Hayden describes cities as "palimpsests" — manuscripts (文稿) written upon repeatedly, earlier versions never fully erased. In her study of Los Angeles, she documented how development projects repeatedly tore down communities inhabited by Mexican-American and African-American families, replacing them with freeways and squares. The new structures served economic ambitions. But they also erased material evidence that these communities ever existed. "When the buildings disappear," Hayden writes, "so does the tangible (有形的) proof that these people lived here, worked here, mattered here."
Some argue that memory can survive through photographs and documents. In fact, there is a difference between knowing about a place and experiencing it. A photograph of an old church conveys its appearance; walking through its doors conveys something else entirely — the height of the ceiling, the echo of footsteps, the weight of silence. These are not details; they are the substance of embodied memory.
Research in environmental psychology suggests that physical spaces maintain collective identity. When communities lose familiar landmarks, they lose reference points that connect individuals to shared history. The result can be spatial disorientation — not merely not knowing where you are, but not knowing who you are in relation to those who came before.
None of this argues against all development. Every generation inherits a city and passes one on. Some walls are meant to fall. Others are meant to stand — physical spaces ground memory in ways that images alone cannot, grounding us in a past that continues to shape who we are.
28. What is the function of paragraph 1
A. To present a phenomenon and introduce the topic.
B. To contrast historical significance with modern appeal.
C. To criticize the over-commercialization of historic sites.
D. To explain why history is overlooked and underestimated.
29. What does the example of Los Angeles intend to illustrate
A. The cost of urban development. B. The role of economic ambitions.
C. The preservation of tangible proof. D. The success of redevelopment projects.
30. What can be inferred about the communities losing landmarks
A. They cherish shared history. B. They face identity confusion.
C. They maintain collective identity. D. They prioritize growth over memory.
31. What does the text convey
A. History outweighs art in value. B. Photos preserve memory inadequately.
C. Cities face a growth-or-history choice. D. Physical spaces hold irreplaceable memory.
D
Chatbots offer a personal shopper for all. They can listen to what a user wants, produce a shortlist of products and help with comparisons. Increasingly, consumers can even make purchases directly through a chatbot.
AI firms are betting that their technology will disrupt shopping just as e-commerce did in the internet age. OpenAI has struck deals with Shopify and Etsy, an online marketplace for artisanal wares (手工制品), to allow merchants to sell their products through its chatbot in return for a fee. Google is also eyeing the market for so-called agentic (代理式) commerce.
Retailers (零售商), however, are not sitting back. Many e-commerce websites are indignant at the idea of an AI agent getting between them and their customers. Amazon, the world's biggest online mall, is eager to keep shoppers coming to its website. It has blocked OpenAI from collecting information. Meanwhile, some retailers, including Walmart, have developed shopping assistants of their own. Research suggests that Americans prefer such bots over third-party ones like ChatGPT when shopping.
Julie Bornstein, founder of Daydream, an AI fashion-shopping tool, notes that chatbots are more helpful when searching for some goods than others. They are at their best when products have clear, comparable specifications (参数) —like vacuum cleaners, for which retailers list weight and power. But in deeply personal areas, such as fashion, most struggle.
How enthusiastically consumers turn to AI for shopping may also depend on how much chatbot-makers embrace ads to make money. Google has reportedly told marketers that it will integrate ads into its Gemini chatbot next year. That could weaken the perceived objectivity of these tools, and thus turn off shoppers.
As AI upends online shopping, physical stores gain renewed importance. With browsing shifting away from retailers’ and brands’ own websites, shops with striking displays and charming assistants will offer another way for companies to shape how they are perceived. Plenty of shoppers say that they value human interactions when shopping. They still want to touch and feel certain types of products, such as clothes. And at this time of year, heading to the high street offers a chance to experience some festive cheer.
32. What does the underlined word “indignant” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Excited. B. Surprised. C. Angry. D. Confused.
33. What is a likely downside of putting ads into chatbots
A. Chatbots may become less profitable.
B. Recommendations may become one-sided.
C. Retailers may be forced to cut their prices.
D. Shoppers may stop visiting physical stores.
34. What is highlighted in the last paragraph
A. The value of offline shopping. B. The disappearance of high streets.
C. The popularity of AI-run physical stores. D. The necessity of maintaining brand image.
35. What's the text mainly about
A. How AI is reshaping shopping. B. Why physical stores regain popularity.
C. How retailers are reacting to AI agents. D. Why chatbots work better for some goods.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
As humanoid robots begin to enter warehouses and factories, a critical question arises: do we need special safety rules for them The answer is yes, and for several important reasons.
___36___ Unlike traditional industrial robots that can be stopped instantly by hitting an emergency button, humanoids are “dynamically stable.” This means they need power to stay upright. If you cut the power, they will likely fall over, potentially causing serious injury to nearby workers.
There is the challenge of defining what exactly needs to be regulated. How should we classify a humanoid robot Does it need legs Arms A head ___37___ This approach would allow safety standards to keep pace with technological innovation without being limited by appearance.
Communication between robots and humans presents another concern. If robots are to share space with people, they must be able to signal their intentions clearly. For instance, a robot walking around a corner needs to indicate its direction, so that people are not surprised. ___38___
There is a psychological factor to consider. People naturally expect more from robots that look like human. ___39___ Experts recommend that safety standards include emotional safety assessments to prevent confusion or stress.
These standards help companies build trust in their products and sell them more easily in different countries, while also giving regulators a clear guide for creating their own rules. ___40___
As Vicentini notes, a practical standard must find a balance between competing interests, and “everybody equally unhappy is good enough,” since aiming for perfect agreement is simply not realistic.
A. Humanoid robots pose unique physical risks.
B. Without clear dialogues, accidents will happen.
C. Interactions between humanoid robots can prevent accidents.
D. Many believe that physical features are essential for safety standards.
E. People may let their guard down, thinking the robots understand more than they do.
F. However, agreeing on global regulations is hard due to different concerns in the field.
G. Experts suggest dropping the term “humanoid” and focusing on a robot’s abilities instead.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Ms. Johnson will never forget Chelsea, a wounded soul. Over the years Chelsea had always struggled, both academically and with self-confidence. Additionally, her mother had died after a heroic battle with a terminal illness when Chelsea was a fifth grader. As she began her sixth grade, Chelsea was still hurting. Ms Johnson worried about her with good reasons.
Each fall, Ms. Johnson takes the students for a five-day adventure at Wolf Ridge, an environmental learning center in the woods of Northern Minnesota overlooking Lake Superior. The week is filled with learning, team building, and overcoming seemingly impossible challenges. They go in October, and the turning leaves of trees come to symbolize the changes happening to the students over the week. The steps and growth students make at Wolf Ridge become a metaphor Ms. Johnson uses throughout the year as her students face challenges in the classroom.
The most difficult activity is the High Adventure Ropes Course, which stretches from tower to tower high amongst the treetops forty feet above the ground. Ms. Johnson knew this experience would be particularly difficult for Chelsea.
When it was time for her to fasten the harness(安全带), Chelsea was already trembling. The harness offers physical protection, but not much mental comfort when nothing but a slippery board or an unsteady wire is between your feet and the ground far below. Chelsea stepped hesitantly onto the Swinging Wood Bridge, and only after the instructor's encouragement, slowly made her way across its shaky boards up to the first tower. With the support of a chaperone (监护人) stationed there, she began her way across the Burma Bridge, made of merely three wires and straps. Her trembling body added to its shaking. From down below, her ground partners shouted up supportively, “Come on, Chelsea, you're doing great! ”
Chelsea finally reached the second tower and eventually stepped out onto the next challenge and slowly inched her way across.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
Now she faced what for many is the most difficult activity: the Single Wire. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The final challenge is a zip line(滑索), which requires leaping off the last tower and sliding to the ground.___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

English Literature Reading Class Opens a New World
Our school offers an English Literature Reading class once a week. The class aims to develop our reading skills and help us enjoy English literature. We read short stories, poems and simple novels in class. Our teacher guides us to discuss the plots and share our feelings in small groups.
This class brings me a lot. I have learned more new words and improved my reading ability. I also get to know different cultures and ways of thinking. It makes me fall in love with English reading and opens a new world for me.
第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
Now she faced what for many is the most difficult activity: the Single Wire. Only a thin wire stood under her feet, with nothing to hold on to tightly. Chelsea froze at first, tears gathering in her eyes. Her classmates kept cheering for her loudly. Taking a deep breath, she moved one foot slowly forward, step by step. Her hands shook badly, but she never stopped. With great courage, she finally made it to the other side, and everyone clapped for her.
The final challenge is a zip line, which requires leaping off the last tower and sliding to the ground. Chelsea was scared at the thought of jumping, but she remembered how she had overcome the difficulties just now. She closed her eyes, jumped off the tower bravely. The wind blew past her face, and she felt free and proud. When she landed safely, Ms. Johnson and her classmates hugged her warmly. This experience taught Chelsea that she was stronger than she thought and gave her much confidence to face difficulties in life.
