What happened in the passage
Liu Lianman and his teammates made every effort to climb Mount Qomolangma. When Liu couldn’t climb further, he let his teammates stand on his shoulders to help them climb to the top. Later, the team gave Liu all their oxygen and reached the top of the towering mountain. The team members supported each other and created China’s mountaineering history.

The team members were Liu Lianman, Qu Yinhua, Gong Bu and Wang Fuzhou.
The story happened on 24 May and 25 May 1960.
Yes, they did succeed in the end. They reached the top of the towering mountain at 4:20 am on 25 May 1960.
Liu Lianman tried four times to climb, but failed. He was too weak to try again, so he chose to be a “human ladder” and helped his teammates climb to the top.
Liu was too tired to keep going, but the team had to carry on.
The other team members gave Liu all their oxygen and made every effort through the cold and dark.

3. Do you like the writer’s use of these expressions Why or why not
Yes, I like these expressions, because they are imaginative. They bring the passage to life and help me understand it better.
Post-reading
Think and share.
1. What kind of person do you think Liu Lianman was What role did he play in his team
I think Liu Lianman was selfless, strong and determined. He tried many times to climb the last few metres of the Second Step, even when he was tired and weak. When he couldn’t go on, he helped his teammates by becoming a “human ladder”. He gave up his own chance to reach the top so that his team could succeed. This shows he cared more about the team than himself, and he never gave up easily. He played a key role in his team. He was a helper and supporter.
Post-reading
2. Do you think the four climbers made a great team Why or why not
Yes, they made a great team. They supported each other, shared responsibilities and worked together to overcome challenges, even in life-threatening situations.
Post-reading

The Chinese women’s basketball team won the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup in 2023. They won because they worked as a team.
