Ravi, the teacher, was very tired after a long, hard day at school.
He walked towards his house. Just then, Ravi felt something
uncomfortable in his throat. He coughed and coughed, and something came
out of his mouth—it was a heron’s feather!
“How strange!” he thought. “How did it get in my throat ”
When he got home, he told his wife about it. His wife agreed that this
was very strange. She also promised she wouldn’t say a word. Or her husband would be the talk in
the town!
When she went outside, their neighbour waved, “Have you heard any news today ”
“My husband was walking home and...you won’t believe it...some heron feathers came out of
his mouth! But you must promise not to tell anyone!” replied the teacher’s wife.
The neighbour then went to the shop to buy some vegetables. He told the shopkeeper who
loved to gossip (说三道四) all about what was going on in the town.
“You know what,” said the neighbour, “Ravi, the schoolteacher, was giving a lesson today...
and a whole heron suddenly came out of his mouth. ▲ ”
Then the cook came into the shop. “Did you hear about that ” the shopkeeper said in a low
voice, “Ravi, the schoolteacher, was buying pencils in the village shop— and suddenly a lot of
herons flew out of his mouth! Ssh, don’t tell others!”
The shopkeeper’s little boy heard this. He ran outside to tell his friends. Soon, the rumors (谣言)
had spread throughout the town!
When Ravi walked into the classroom the next morning, all his pupils were looking at him
quietly—it was very unusual! Even more strangely, their parents were looking at him through the
windows too.
“Why are you all looking at me like that ” he asked.
“We heard that yesterday a heron flew out of your mouth, and some other kinds of birds too.
3
And a river of water with fish of all kinds in it! We want to see you do it again!” A boy spoke up.

In the middle of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, Amanda Barrows carefully placed a
wooden nightstand (床头柜). It went with a sign reading, “Take a poem, leave a poem.”
So far, more than 100 poems have come in. “It’s completely unexpected,” said Barrows. “I’m
really impressed by support.”
A park manager by day and a poet by night, Barrows joined a Poetry for the People class at
4
City College of San Francisco (CCSF). Students were asked to find a way to “bring poetry into the
community” as their final project.
In the beginning, Barrows struggled to land on an idea. Eventually, though, it struck her that
she could bring together her two worlds— parks and poetry. A neighbour offered a weathered
nightstand, which Barrows thought would be perfect for her project. She could fill the nightstand
with fresh paper and pens and add a box at the bottom for poems.
The idea reminded her of Little Free Libraries, which was known for the bookstands placed
across the city. “I was inspired by the little free libraries, where you ‘take a book, leave a book’.
And I thought, ‘Maybe I could do this with poetry.’” said Barrows. Since she only had one
nightstand to work with, Barrows decided that she would leave it in a park for four days before
moving it to a new location. Barrows’s goal is to bring the poetry nightstand to all of them.
Since the Poetry Nightstand project started, people have donated many poems. Barrows has
shared them on social media. “It is a community project,” Barrows said. “It belongs to all.”
Her poetry class teacher, Lauren Muller, commented, “people need poetry now”, which might
be the reason for the success of Barrows’s project.

We all love our parents and turn to them when we’re in need, but would you like them to hear

In the past the generation gap included a technology gap, where children were up to date with
latest technology and parents were left behind, content to continue their day to day lives as they
always had because they had no need to know more about technology. However, more and more
parents are beginning to realize just how important social networks are in their lives. This
realization has given many parents the motivation to educate themselves about social networking
sites.
These days many people are attracted to social networking sites because they can choose who
they have around them; there’s also a certain amount of control over privacy that we don’t get in
real life. Sometimes we feel that privacy is violated when we must accept a “friend” request from a
parent or family member.
It’s a difficult choice whether or not to allow a parent to become a part of our online lives. On
the one hand, we don’t want to refuse their request because that might hurt their feelings or make
them feel you have something to hide. On the other hand, if you do accept, then you could have a
sense of being watched and no longer feel free to comment or communicate the way you did before.
A recent survey suggested that parents shouldn’t take it personally if their child ignores their
request: “When a teen ignores a parent’s friend request, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are
hiding something, but it could mean that this is one part of their life where they want to be
independent.”
Perhaps talking with parents and giving explanations would help if you do choose not to add
them to your friends list.

between As you sleep, parts of your body rest while other parts are busy rebuilding muscles,
refreshing cells, and boosting your defences against illness—to make you strong, energetic the next
day. And your brain uses sleep time to process and store information it took in that day. The
following cycle shows what happens in your sleep.
7
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU DON’T GET ENOUGH SLEEP
A tired body struggles to do its jobs. That can result in a weak ability to fight infection, slow
reflexes and a cranky, forgetful, and unfocused you. It can even lead you to overeat.
So staying up late to prepare for a quiz is not a good choice. Study early—then let your brain
store the information while you rest up and dream of acing that test!

Some believe that people are either smart or dumb. And if they are smart, everything is easy for
them. ___41___ But they can improve the skills they have and develop new ones. What’s your
opinion
In fact, this is related to one’s mindset (思维模式 ). Dr. Carol Dweck, a psychology (心理 )
professor at Stanford University, has discovered that people with a fixed mindset solve problems in
a much different way from those with a growth mindset.
Dr. Dweck found people with a fixed mindset care about grades. When they make mistakes,
they think it means they’re not smart. ___42___ They’re afraid of challenges, because if they don’t
do well, they may look dumb. People with a growth mindset, on the other hand, care about learning,
8
not grades. They learn from mistakes by trying different ways to solve problems or asking for help.
___43___ They discovered that students with a growth mindset do better in math; those with a
fixed mindset do worse. Why Kids with both mindsets do well in primary school, but middle
school math is much harder. So while the growth-mindset kids accept the challenge and work
harder, the fixed-mindset kids may just give up. ___44___
But Dweck’s team discovered something even more important than that. They found that, with
some work, kids can choose to have a growth mindset and do better in school. Everyone has some
of each type of mindset. ___45___ When you hear your fixed mindset voice telling you that you’re
dumb, or that you’ll look stupid if you ask for help, or that learning a new skill is hard, talk back to
it! Then you really can get smarter by working hard, practicing and challenging yourself!
A. As a result, their grades drop.
B. They also care about how smart they look.
C. Some hold the belief that not everyone can become a genius (天才).
D. They are just like two kinds of voices in your head.
E. Dweck and her team did a research among middle school students.

didn’t do well when she took the first training course. However, after years
