Some of the World Heritage Sites have been attracting tourists for hundreds of years and are as fascinating now as they were when they were first uncovered.
Cappadocia, Turkey
Designated a World Heritage Site in 1985, Cappadocia is a place of flowing
rock formations and stone-capped chimneys (狭缝). Consider taking one of the many hiking trails to get up close. Nearby, in the village of Uchisar are the ancient cave
homes built by the people of the Bronze Age.
Borobudur, Indonesia
Borobudur is one of Indonesia’s most famous landmarks, included in the list of World Heritage Sites in 1991. Located on the island of Java, this massive temple
complex was constructed in the 700s, but two to three hundred years later, it was abandoned, possibly due to volcanic eruptions in the area, and went relatively
undisturbed for centuries. The site was uncovered in the 1800s and later restored.
Mesa Verde, U.S.A.
Mesa Verde is home to some of the most well-preserved Indian ruins in North America. It has been on the list of World Heritage Sites since 1978. The most
impressive sites are the cliff dwellings (住所), where the Ancestral Puebloans lived between the 12th century and the late 13th century. You can drive up to the top of the

Over the past three years, Kang Jian has created more than 400 dough sculptures (面塑) and become a city-level inheritor (传承人) of this intangible cultural heritage in Mohe, Heilongjiang Province.
“When I was a little boy, every time my parents made dumplings, they would
give me a small piece of dough,” he said. “I tried to make various animals — a rabbit, a fish, or a snail. The small, simple objects brought me lots of good childhood
memories and planted the seeds of fine art, especially sculpture, in my heart.” Kang’s parents were not financially able to support his desire to study fine arts while he was at school. But he didn’t give up. He spent his spare time after school studying drawing by himself.
Then, in December 2018, during a visit to a museum in Beijing, Kang, for the

first time, got information about the intangible cultural heritage of dough sculpting,
which attracted him greatly. “I was really excited to learn about dough sculpting.” he said. “Then I had the idea of taking my childhood interest up again.” He then spent 20 days learning skills from Bai Chunyu, a provincial-level inheritor of dough sculpting. And in August 2019, he got the chance to learn from another national-level inheritor.
Kang spent nearly all his spare time practicing, hoping to improve quickly. “To learn as much as possible during my 40 days there, I practiced every day from 6 am until late at night,” he said. “When I slept, I had to put my hands in hot water to
relieve the pain. But all the efforts turned out to be worth it.”
In April, Kang completed the dough sculptures of 108 characters from the novel Outlaws of the Marsh after 16 months of work. “Most of my dough sculptures are
traditional Chinese characters. In my mind, the real value of my dough sculpture as a national intangible cultural heritage lies in its connection with traditional Chinese
culture. That’s the charm and significance ofthe art,” he said.
4 .What inspired Kang to have the dream of dough sculpting
A .His talent for drawing.
B .His admiration for Bai’s skills.
C .His parents’ encouragement and support.

A .He sought guidance from masters.
B .He paid frequent visits to museums.
C .He got formal training at an art school.

It’s the start of a new era of AI at Google, says CEO Sundar Pichai: the Gemini era. Gemini is Google’s latest large language model, which Pichai first mentioned at the I/O developer conference in June and is now releasing to the public. This
significant advance in AI will ultimately impact almost all of Google’s products.
Gemini is more than a single AI model. There’s a lighter version called Gemini Nano meant for offline Android devices, a more powerful version called Gemini Pro that will power many Google AI services, and an even more capable model called
Gemini Ultra — the most powerful LLM (大语言模型) Google has yet created. It seems to be mostly designed for data centers and enterprise applications.
OpenAI launched ChatGPT in 2022. Now Google is ready to fight back.
“We’ve done a very thorough analysis of the systems side by side,” says CEO Sundar Pichai. Google ran 32 well- established criteria comparing the two models, from
overall tests to the Python code generation. “I think we’re substantially (大量地)
ahead on 30 out of 32 of those criteria.” he adds.
Gemini’s clearest advantage comes from its ability to understand and interact
with video and audio. This was by design: multi- modality has been part of the plan
from the beginning. Google built one multi- sensory model from the beginning, unlike OpenAI’s separate models for images and voice.
Right now, Gemini’s most basic models are text- based , but more advanced models like Gemini Ultra can work with images, video, and audio. “Over time,”
Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis says, “Gemini will gain more senses,
become more aware, accurate, and grounded. These models just sort of understand better about the world around them.” These models still have other problems, but Hassabis says they will improve as they learn more.

If you’ve ever awoken from a vivid dream only to find that you can’t remember the details by the end of breakfast, you’re not alone.
Dreaming happens mostly during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. During this sleep stage, brain activity looks similar to that in a waking brain, with some very
important differences. Key among them: During REM sleep, the areas of the brain that transfer memories into long-term storage — as well as the long-term storage areas themselves — are relatively closed off. Short-term memory areas are active during REM sleep, but those only hang on to memories for about 30 seconds.
People have to wake up from REM sleep, generally, to recall a dream. If,
instead, they pass into the next stage of sleep without waking, that dream will never enter long-term memory.
REM sleep occurs about every 90 minutes, and it lengthens as the night drags
on. The first REM cycle of the night is typically just a few minutes long, but by the
end of an eight-hour night of sleep, a person has typically been in the REM stage for a good 20 minutes. That’s why the strongest association between any life circumstance and your memory of dreams is the number of hours you’ve slept.
If you sleep only six hours, you’re getting less than half of the dream time of an eight-hour night. Those final hours of sleep are the most important for dreaming. And people tend to remember the last dream of the night — the one just before waking.
Other factors also contribute to whether you’ll remember your fantastic
nighttime adventures. Women tend to remember a few more dreams than men. Young people remember more dreams than older people. Memories of dreams increase in
kids from the age at which they can communicate about those dreams plateau from the early teens to the early 20s and then very gradually decline in adults over the rest of their life span.
12 .What is the purpose of the first paragraph
A .To present a problem. B .To introduce the topic.
C .To stress a phenomenon. D .To make an assumption.
13 .How can people remember their dreams
A .By getting into the next stage from REM sleep.
B .By transferring memories into long-term storage.
C .By sleeping long hours to remember more dreams.
D .By waking up from REM sleep and recalling their dreams immediately.
14 .What does the underlined word “plateau” in the last paragraph probably mean
A .Grow to a steady stage. B .Prevent the further loss.
C .Cause the big changes. D .Lengthen the sleeping time.
15 .What is the suitable title of the passage

Money Couldn’t Buy Everything
Fifteen years ago, I was born in a big family. I had been taught that money
couldn’t buy everything ever since I was a little kid. My parents are the most
hard-working people I have ever seen. As much as my parents tried to teach me these values, some could only be learned through personal experiences.
As a child, I would sit in the church trying to concentrate on the words of the priest (牧师) ,but my attention was soon attracted by the shining gold and the
diamonds worn by the Saturday churchgoers. As my eyes began to wander, I noticed men dressed in their tailored suits and shirts with women in their designer dresses.
My family, on the other hand, was the opposite of rich. Our clothes had been
washed so many times that the colors had become dull and lifeless. Although this
showed the money struggles of our large family, our faces were always washed and
hair neatly combed. When sitting on the old big red and white truck after the service, I pictured the lives led by those driving their brand-new cars, wishing I would be one of them.
I never stopped those daydreams, even when I was in middle school. Since it
was a private school, most of the children came from wealthy families. Although I
could hide my lack of wealth at school by wearing our school uniforms, my situation was embarrassingly obvious on weekends with my classmates wearing designer jeans and I had no choice but to wear my sisters’ old jeans. I never fitted in with my
classmates. To my relief, there was only one girl named Julie who opened her heart to me. I was attached to her. Soon, her birthday was approaching. Julie invited me to
attend her birthday party.

根据第一段“If you’ve ever awoken from a vivid dream only to find that you can’t remember the details by the end of breakfast, you’re not alone. (如果你曾经从一个生动的梦中醒来,却发现到早餐结束时你记不起细节,你并不孤单。)”可知,如果你曾经从一个生动的梦中醒来,却发现你到早餐结束时都不能记起梦的细节,那么并不是你一个人有这种情况。下文对这种遗忘梦境的现象进行了具体介绍,由此推知,本段通过举例子来引入一个话题:人们会忘记很多梦。故选 B。
13 .细节理解题。根据第三段“People have to wake up from REM sleep, generally, to recall a
dream. If, instead, they pass into the next stage of sleep without waking, that dream will never
enter long-term memory.
Memories of dreams increase in kids from the age at which they can communicate about those dreams plateau from the early teens to the early 20s and then very
gradually decline in adults over the rest oftheir life span. 故选 A。
故选 A。

Dear teachers and classmates,
Today, I’d like to share my thoughts on whether to accept brain-computer interface technology to assist learning. My answer is yes.

Of course, we should use it wisely. But progress should not be stopped by fear. Let’s embrace the future with an open mind. Thank you!

Today, I’d like to share my thoughts on whether to accept brain-computer interface technology to assist learning. My answer is no.

When she opened the gift box, my heart was too nervous to beat. I looked closely at her
face, wondering if she would just laugh at me. What happened next was totally beyond my
imagination. Upon seeing the doll, Julie let out a cry of excitement and she held it close to her

everything. It was our friendship that really mattered.
