I can still remember the first day when I met my best friend. She had just moved to the
neighborhood and her grandmother brought her down to meet me. I hid behind my mother and she hid behind her grandmother, scared of looking at each other.
Soon, we lost the shyness and started playing with each other, riding bikes to each other’s house and having sleepovers. In 7th grade she was going through family problems. However,

every summer we would sit at each other’s house, watch movies on TV and talk about all the boys we liked.
It was last year that I noticed the problem. She suffered from clinical depression (临床抑郁症), and had to go to a hospital during the day. I was very sorry for her at first. But with the late
night calls and meeting each other halfway up the street at midnight, we still stayed in touch. I
wanted to be there for her since her new best friend left her, and I knew I still cared about her like a sister.
Yesterday she came to me and said, “I never knew what a best friend was until you were
the only person that would stop me from cutting myself and that ever made me feel better about
myself and my problems. You didn’t know this but I was trying to kill myself that very night you called me and I was crying. I owe you so much, and you didn’t even know you were helping me. ”
We both cried. And I guess a kind of lesson from my life so far is to never give up your friends. Even if they aren’t as cool as others, or people think they are crazy, they need someone there. If you leave them, you will only be very sorry. So if your friends need you, and you care about them, you should be always there for them.

C .Because they quarreled before. D .Because they were both shy.

6 .What would have happened to her friend if the author had not cared about her
A .She would have lost her new best friend.
B .She would have killed herself that night.
C .She would have run away from her family.
D .She would have stayed in hospital for a long time.
7 .What lesson can we learn from the story
A .Always care about your friends. B .Don’t care about others’ opinions.
C .Never owe your friends too much. D .Try to be as cool as others.

It may come as a shock to owners, but dogs hate being hugged, a study has shown.
Animal psychologists say dogs feel stressed and unhappy when they are hugged by their owners, because it stops them being able to run away.
In a study which analyzed 25 pictures of dogs as they were being hugged, eight out often animals looked clearly uncomfortable.
Experts at The Kennel Club, and Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, also agreed that owners should not treat their dogs like children, because most pets did not like to be hugged.
The new study was carried out by Dr Stanley Coren, a professor of psychology at the
University of British Columbia. He analysed images of dogs being hugged by adults and children he found on the Internet, looking for signs of stress.
At an extreme end, when a dog is especially anxious it shows its teeth or may bite, but Dr Coren said there are other signs that it may be uncomfortable but they are small and not obvious.
Signs of stress include the dog folding its ears down, half- moon eyes or turning its head away to avoid eye contact. If the dog has its eyes closed, it could also be a sign of anxiety. Open its mouth or raising one paw is another warning sign.
“The clear suggestion to come out of this research is to save your hugs for your two- footed family members and lovers.”
It is clearly better from the dog’s point of view if you express your fondness for your pet with a pat, a kind word, rand maybe a treat.
Some people think that giving their dog a hug is a nice thing to do, but the reality is that a family pet will often tolerate a hug but doesn’t like it.
“On the whole dogs are sociable animals and love communicating with people, but any
action that restricts a dog’s movement could make them uncomfortable and it is important for an owner to recognize the signs of stress or anxiety.”
8 .According to the study, what might a dog not feel when it is being hugged
A .Stressed. B .Uncomfortable. C .Shocked. D .Unhappy.
9 .Which of the following is not the sign of stress for dogs
A .Showing its teeth. B .Folding its ears down.

You forget to bring your water bottle to the airport, so you buy a plastic one and keep
refilling it. Or you order takeout for dinner and save the black plastic container to pack your lunch the next day. Reuse is one of the core rules of sustainability (可持续性). But should you be
reusing these single-use plastics Experts say no.
Single-use plastics leach (滤出) chemicals and shed microplastics (微塑料) into your
environment. Though studies have not directly compared single-use and reusable plastic, experts say they are more worried about single-use plastics because of how they’re made. A single-use
plastic water bottle sheds micro and nano plastics into your water when you refill it, and a takeout container or frozen meal tray sheds these particles into your food. Chemical exposure increases if plastic is heated, typically in a microwave, a dishwasher or even by placing hot food in a takeout container. When heat is applied, molecules (分子) move faster, meaning it could be easier for
some of these particles to make its way into your food.
Concerns with chemicals and microplastics primarily apply to food, experts said, because you are eating them. Reusing single-use plastics like grocery bags is not a major concern, they
added. The most important thing you should do is avoid heating your plastic, experts agreed. “A pretty hard-and-fast rule is to never microwave plastic,” Enck said. “And there’s also a suggestion not to put plastic into the dishwasher if it’s on a hot cycle.”
12 .Why does the author list examples in the first paragraph
A .To analyse the reason. B .To lead into the topic.

Why is Chinese a Good Language to Learn

17 It helps a lot if you’re looking to work in a career that involves dealing with Chinese buyers or suppliers.
Know about the history and culture. 18 In fact, China has had a significant say in the history of the world. It’s agreed that four great inventions — namely paper-making,
printing, gunpowder and the compass — made their way from China to Europe via the famous
Silk Road. To really understand the contribution ofthis part ofthe world and have a deep insight into the history of Asia, speaking the language can be beneficial.
19 Chinese literature, both ancient and modern, comes from an entirely different cultural background than literature written in the West. To really appreciate it, however, you have to read it in the original language. Many works of Chinese literature haven’t been translated into English, so you have no choice but to enjoy them as they stand. If you want to understand modern

“Why she let out my secret Why she did that to me ” I vividly remembered that day when
试卷第 11 页,共 13 页
I was confused at the knowing looks everyone gave me. That terrible experience was impressed on my mind. I couldn’t forgive the person with whom I had shared my secret. She lost all my trust
and friendship.
Five years back, Sally was a new addition in our class. There was something mysterious
about her that attracted me towards her. She was the most friendly person I had known. We started as classmates but after a few months we were like best friends. We did homework together and
dreamed of going to the same university one day. We hung out and went to the movies on weekends. That was a sweet time.
Nevertheless, I couldn’t expect such an enormous betrayal(背叛)from her. I didn’t know
what made me tell Sally about my personal life. I felt much regret to myself. She added her own
spices to it and made it the hottest topic in school. It was like someone had stabbed(戳) a knife in my back. After she let out my secret, everyone at school started laughing at me and gazing at me whenever I passed. I was like a pond in which someone had thrown a stone and it had been spilled up. Soon afterwards, I left school and shifted to another one, because I couldn’t bear the pain any more. Sally called me many times. However, I didn’t answer and deleted all her contact
information. My heart was broken because the person whom I trusted most cheated me.
I made efforts to remove the scar from my heart. I started a new life, leaving all the bad
memories behind, because they made me a person who often thought about the past experiences. Five years later, with the life going on, I made new friends and seldom thought about the past.

But one day I happened to get the shocking truth from Sally, my former classmate. Helen
said that after I left school the gossip gradually escaped everyone in our school, but it indeed
posed a mental torture to Sally. And unexpectedly, I was told that Sally was not the one who
brought my secret to light. Instead, it was Anna who had a big mouth and always wanted to spy on other people’s private affairs. She overheard my conversation with sally that day. Heart plunging, I was at sea, feeling that I was thunderstruck. Anxious and regretful, I asked Helen for any
possible contact with Sally and I was given her old phone number she was still using.
Paragraph 2
I immediately called Sally in order to break up the misunderstanding. After getting through, I conveyed my genuine apology to her. She paused initially and then replied mildly, “Nothing
matters as long as we remain close friends as before. Having received her forgiveness, I was in
tears of guilt and relief, wishing the misunderstanding had not happened. I wished time could go back and I could fix my mistakes. It really dawned on me that a little mistake could spoil what we tirelessly constructed, but it was frank communication that served as a magic glue which restored what we truly treasured.
