Ultramarathon runner Russ Cook, who is from Worthing on England’s south coast, reached Ras ben Sakka in Tunisia — the northernmost point of Africa, completing his 352-day mission (任务) to run the length of the African continent. He also raised more than £ 690,000 for two
causes: The Running Charity, which uses running and fitness to support young people who are experiencing homelessness, and Sandblast Ltd, which educates people about Sahrawi culture.
Cook set off from South Africa’s Cape Agulhas — the southernmost point of Africa. He
had initially aimed to cover 9,320 miles during the challenge, crossing 16 borders, but he extended his total distance to more than 10,190 miles due to a multitude of complications. After crossing the finish line, Cook embraced his family and friends before taking a dip in the Mediterranean Sea,
from where he told Sky News, “It was good. I’m a bit tired.”
Cook previously completed 71 marathons in 66 days as he ran from Istanbul to London in

2019. His motivation for the latest challenge was to raise people’s mental health awareness. His
challenge began with a 50.6-km run in South Africa. Afterward, he wrote in a post: “Tougher days are yet to come of course, and no doubt they will be the toughest I’ve ever faced. I’m ready to
attack them all.”
His instinct proved right. On Day 20, severe dehydration (脱水) forced him to stop in the
Namib Desert. A host of other issues continued after that. Cook lost contact with his team in a
jungle in the Democratic Republic of Congo, although they were later reunited. He also battled
numerous injuries throughout — most obviously a troublesome back issue that forced him to get
an X-ray in Benin City, Nigeria, as well as a few bouts of food poisoning (中毒) over the course of the challenge. Visa issues concerning entering Algeria also threatened to end the challenge. The final months saw him run across the Sahara Desert, where he often wore protective glasses to fight sandstorms.

Mounting evidence links red meat consumption (消费) with a higher risk of diseases in humans and significant harm to the environment. In contrast, forage (饵料) fish, which are food for larger predators, are highly nutritious (有营养的), environmentally friendly and the most
abundant fish species in the world’s oceans.
While research has shown the benefits of forage fish, until now it has been unclear to what
试卷第 5 页,共 12 页
extent they might cut the global burden of diseases if substituted for red meat. Now a team of Japanese and Australian researchers have an answer after conducting the largest analysis of its kind.
The researchers modelled four situations, each representing a different pattern of forage fish distribution globally. They used data for projected red meat consumption in 2050 and historical
data on the forage fish catch from marine habitats. Globally, this approach could prevent as many as 750,000 deaths from diet-related diseases in 2050 and avoid up to 15 million years of life lived with a disability.
Forage fish are abundant in calcium, vitamin B12 and omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, the intake of which may prevent coronary heart diseases. They also have the lowest
carbon footprint of any animal food source, the researchers said. Adopting this type of diet would be especially helpful for low- and middle-income countries, where these fish are cheap and
plentiful, and the toll taken by heart diseases in particular is high, the researchers added.
However, at the moment three-quarters of forage fish catches are made into fish meal and fish oil — products mostly used for fish farming. The limited supply of forage fish isn’t sufficient to replace all red meat, the researchers acknowledged. But swapping them could still substantially cut the global burden of diseases. “This study points to the need for fish-based food policy
guidelines and nutrition-sensitive policies to promote forage fish consumption,” the researchers wrote.
8 .Which is a problem of eating red meat according to the text
A .Harming the planet. B .Reducing animal diversity.
C .Causing economic stress. D .Leading to poor nutrition.
9 .What do the numbers in paragraph 3 indicate
A .The large increase in deadly diseases. B .The serious destruction of ocean habitats.

C .Fish farming — a career producing good nutrition
D .Forage fish — a promising replacement for red meat

It is late autumn — millions of gardeners across the northern hemisphere put on their
thickest sweaters, spent hours clearing large piles of leaves and packed them into plastic bags at the end of driveways.
In the US alone, nearly 10 million tonnes of garden waste go to landfill every year. That is a large amount of effort, not just from an environmental viewpoint but from that of our aching
backs, too. So where does this advice come from Well, it largely comes from the belief that thick fallen leaves can make plants under them unable to breathe, especially shorter grass. They shut
down important photosynthesis (光合作用) and get in the way of the growth of shorter grass. However, this received wisdom has recently been questioned by researchers at Wisconsin
University.
The key finding of their new research was that although clearing fallen leaves is one of the most common gardening practices, it makes very little sense. In natural ecosystems, fallen leaves help return nutrients necessary for the healthy growth of plants to soil, which greatly improves soil conditions. Removing leaves year after year breaks this ecological (生态的) balance. Letting some leaves stick around to cover your garden is a great way to help your grass and the local ecosystem.
They further explained that if less than 50 percent of your lawn (草坪) is covered by fallen leaves, you might as well go back indoors and put your feet up. The advantages ofthis light leaf coverage far outweigh the disadvantages — the leaves will quickly break down and help the lawn grow far better the next year. Only at over 50 percent coverage do the Wisconsin researchers
recommend clearing up.
So why not consider leaving the leaves Save time, carbon and effort, and in exchange get a healthier lawn from this garden waste — that seems like a pretty good deal. And how many plastic bags could be saved by simply not discarding fallen leaves every year In the US alone, about 700 million.
12 .What does the author describe in paragraph 1
A .An amazing autumn game. B .A common sight in gardens.

13 .What is the received wisdom
A .Fallen leaves need not be cleared. B .Fallen leaves protect shorter grass.

14 .Why is clearing fallen leaves meaningless according to paragraph 3
A .It damages ecosystems. B .It brings economic pressure.
C .More leaves continue to fall. D .Walking on the lawn ruins grass.
15 .What does the underlined word “discarding” in the last paragraph mean
A .Studying. B .Forgetting. C .Turning. D .Throwing.

There is a saying that we should all just mind our own business and let the chips fall where they may, because no good comes from doing good. This, of course, is not necessarily true.
In Hawaiian culture, aloha has many meanings. First, it is a greeting. However, it is also an expression of love and friendship. One man was a living example of “aloha”, for he had a story to unfold.
Amanda was shopping with her young son, and she was absorbed in picking up their
groceries for their family reunion. She was in such a hurry that she even forgot her wallet in the

The woman returned to the supermarket, and started her search for the lost wallet by watching hours and hours of security footage in the supermarket. After turning to several
different cameras around the store, but in vain, she completely gave up hope.
Andy Jose was a security guard at the World supermarket. He moved to Maui 5 years ago, and worked as a security guard at the grocery store to support the family and put himself through college. He rode his bike to work and school every day because he didn’t have a car.
