There was no way to escape when they spotted a polar bear. Verena Mohaupt and a handful of colleagues were trapped on a floating sea ice while the bear gazed at them, smelling the air, a
dangerous sign.
“That’s when everything kicks in,” Mohaupt says, “and you focus on what’s important.” As a colleague fired into the sky as a warning shot, Mohaupt radioed their research ship a few
kilometres away, whose helicopter luckily arrived quickly and Mohaupt didn’t have to use the gun that was hanging over her shoulder.
Keeping a lookout for bears was a regular duty for Mohaupt, the logistics coordinator(后勤协调员) for a year-long mission known as the MOSAiC——the largest Arctic research
exploration in history. The project, consisting of roughly 300 scientists, led by scientist
MarkusRex, has collected massive measurements that will help better forecast how warming will transform the globe in the coming decades. For months, the exploration operated in constant
darkness while polar bears wandered nearby, storms rocked the ship and the ice shifted and
cracked. Then, when the Sun returned, the ice began to melt, creating a life-threatening risk and a nightmare for researchers who needed to keep their instruments from sinking.
Tasked with the security of the mission, Mohaupt designed an extensive training course for the participants in which they learnt how to avoid the danger, like storm-rocking and ice-cracking. They jumped into a Norwegian channel in their survival suits and climbed out of the freezing
waters using only their ice picks. They learnt how to escape from a crashed helicopter. And they
discussed the psychological effects of being far from home. Mohaupt brought knitting equipment, yoga mats and a violin for their mental health——although having been prepared for the isolation.
Mohaupt didn’t expect a career in polar regions, but says she has always been drawn to the

In an age when digital assistants complete our sentences before we fully form them, it is easy to believe that printed dictionaries have outlived their usefulness. Yet they remain essential, because no tool better reminds us that language is not simply corrected — it is crafted.
Before spell-check and AI, students and writers turned to dictionaries not only to check
meanings but also to explore usage examples and word histories. A student drafting an essay, for instance, might look up “charge” and discover it can mean “accuse” “rush forward” or “fill with energy”. Choosing among these possibilities required thought, and that process often shaped the writer’s ideas. An AI assistant, by contrast, may simply replace the word with the most common option, leaving little room for personal intention.
Dictionaries have also played a guiding role in English. Johnson’s and Webster’s
dictionaries, widely used by schools and publishers, helped establish spelling and meaning at
times when regional dialects differed sharply. Even today, when dictionary makers update entries to reflect new expressions such as “ghosting” or “finsta”, they rely on everyday speakers for
evidence. This back-and-forth — public use influencing dictionaries, dictionaries influencing
public use — keeps language both flexible and shared.
But this balance is weakening. As online communication takes over daily life, formal
English ebbs. Casual abbreviations, emojis, and speech-like sentences now appear in emails and
even workplace reports. For many young people, writing “Sounds good!!” reads more confident
than a polished, formal sentence. The shift is understandable, yet it raises a question: If algorithms (算法) increasingly finish our sentences, do we still learn how to shape them ourselves
AI writing tools offer clean, quick suggestions, but they rely on fixed patterns. As George Orwell once warned, such ready-made phrasing can “think our thoughts” for us. When writers
accept every suggestion, originality slowly disappears. Dictionaries, by contrast, push us to explore options and make deliberate choices.
Our ability to express ourselves shapes who we are. Losing the dictionary would mean losing not only a reference book, but a way of thinking — one that keeps language creative, thoughtful, and deeply human.
28 .What does the example of “charge” show
A .Word histories are stressed a lot in dictionaries.
B .AI assistants are more efficient than printed dictionaries.
C .Printed dictionaries help users gain deeper insight into words.
D .Students struggle to choose the right meaning of certain words.
29 .What does the underlined word “ebbs” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A .Withdraws. B .Arises.
C .Improves. D .Stabilizes.
30 .What can be inferred from paragraph 5
A .No convenience comes without a cost.
B .AI tools contribute much to creative works.
C .Dictionaries provide more fixed word choices than AI tools.
D .George Orwell encouraged the use of existing writing patterns.

A .The History of English Dictionaries
B .AI Assistants Threaten Language Creativity
C .The Necessity of Formal English in Digital Age

At one time, the passing on of traditional drama was difficult. Many celebrities and big
names went to communities to carry out public welfare performances of opera, and did everything possible to expand the coverage of traditional drama. In recent years, traditional Chinese culture

In literature, flat and round characters offer distinct approaches to character development. Flat characters are defined by a singular symbolic characteristic. 36 For example, the evil stepmothers in traditional fairy tales are flat characters, serving to drive the story with their simplicity.
By contrast, Jia Baoyu in Dream of the Red Chamber exemplifies (举例说明) round
characters, defined by inner conflicts, contradictions, and personal growth. ____37____ They reflect the unpredictability of humanity, making them more relatable and dynamic to readers.
In earlier literary works, flat characters often symbolized heroic ideals, such as the brave heroes in The Odyssey. As society moves away from idealized heroes, literature focuses more on characters’ personal struggles, reflecting how writers began to see humanity in a more complex way. With the rise of realism in the 19th century, round characters gained popularity, as seen in Jane Eyre, which allowed for the exploration of personal identity and internal conflict.
38
However, not every character that appears in a story needs to be deep. 39 Imagine the main character is taking a taxi to a hotel. If we make the taxi driver a round character, the
focus could shift from the main character to the taxi driver, potentially taking attention away from the main plot.
40 They together create tension and richness in a literary work. Flat characters
provide clarity and focus, simplifying themes and making them accessible to readers. Meanwhile, round characters reveal human complexity, showing life beyond black and white.
A .Neither type of characters is better than the other.
B .Such characters stand out for complexity and depth.
C .We don’t get heartfelt backstory to enrich their roles.
D .If flat characters are round, they may “steal the show”.
E .This shows how literature reflects evolving social views.
F .Round characters are more engaging than flat characters.
G .They are more like a spotlight, drawing attention to one aspect.

When I arrived home from school, night was falling. A call came from the public: a bird of unknown species was being attacked by a group of noisy children in his front garden. He scared
them off and grabbed their victim. I immediately called for my classmate Jack to the spot.
We were standing in front of a stranger’s house in an unfamiliar street, rescue box in hand. My head full of instructions to follow. “The bird would be our first test as a volunteer wildlife
rescuer!” Jack said excitedly. We had completed the two-day intensive training course the previous month and learned the basic skills of rescuing animals in various situations.
But we were anxious, too. After all, it was the first time for us to rescue a bird. Would I be able to transfer the bird neatly into my rescue box Many worries flashed in my mind. Sensing my unease about the act ahead, Jack said, “These things are pretty easy to deal with!”
I was wondering what kind of bird it was when a kind-looking man appeared and led us inside to see our very first patient. I lifted the edge of the shoe box very slightly to see an
angry-looking bird standing to attention on very thin and long legs, together with a slice of banana and a small dish of water. He didn’t know its true name but the folks called the creature Red Fan.
“It’s eaten some banana,” said the man proudly. The poor soul seemed rather nervous, so l decided not to grab it by hand but just transfer the whole shoe box into my rescue box.
Back home, we could only see some minor injuries in the left wing, but there was no blood on its feathers. Jack managed to treat the injuries with some iodophor We assessed its condition to find out ifit was appropriate to release the bird the next day. How could we help it
spend the night peacefully We hadn’t seen this species of bird before, let alone its habits.

根据第三段“Keeping a lookout for bears was a regular duty for Mohaupt, the logistics coordinator(后勤协调员) for a year-long mission known as the MOSAiC——the largest Arctic research exploration in history.”(Mohaupt 是一名后勤协调员,负责为期一年的 MOSAiC任务,这是历史上最大的北极研究探险。)
根据第三段“For months, the exploration operated in constant darkness while polar bears wandered nearby, storms rocked the ship and the ice shifted and cracked. Then, when the Sun returned, the ice began to melt, creating a life-threatening risk and a nightmare for
researchers who needed to keep their instruments from sinking.”(几个月来,探险一直在黑暗中进行,北极熊在附近游荡,风暴摇晃着船,冰在移动和破裂。 故选 A。
Tasked with the security of the mission, Mohaupt designed an
extensive training course for the participants in which they learnt how to avoid the danger, like
storm-rocking and ice-cracking.”(为了确保任务的安全,Mohaupt 为参与者设计了一个广泛的培训课程,让他们学习如何避免危险,比如风暴摇晃和冰裂。)和“They learnt how to escape from a crashed helicopter. And they discussed the psychological effects of being far from home.
Mohaupt brought knitting equipment, yoga mats and a violin for their men tal health——although having been prepared for the isolation.”(他们学会了如何从坠毁的直升机中逃生。

She was there to make sure that we were protected,” says
Markus Rex, “Mohaupt is certainly the champion in the field.””(“

Before spell-check and AI, students and writers turned to
dictionaries not only to check meanings but also to explore usage examples and word histories. A
student drafting an essay, for instance, might look up “charge” and discover it can mean “accuse”
“rush forward” or “fill with energy” . Choosing among these possibilities required thought, and
that process often shaped the writer’s ideas.
根据第四段“As online communication takes over daily life, formal English ebbs. Casual abbreviations, emojis, and speech-like sentences now appear in emails and even workplace reports. 故选 A 项。
AI writing tools offer clean, quick suggestions, but they rely on fixed patterns. As George Orwell once warned, such ready-made phrasing can “think our
thoughts” for us. When writers accept every suggestion, originality slowly disappears. 故选 A 项。
In an age when digital assistants complete our sentences before we fully form them, it is easy to believe that printed dictionaries have outlived their usefulness. Yet
they remain essential, because no tool better reminds us that language is not simply corrected — it is crafted.

根据第二段中的“Peking Opera was also well-received on short video platforms thanks to a series of augmented reality (AR) effects.(由于一系列增强现实(AR)效果,京剧在短视频平台上也很受欢迎)”可知,新科技的运用促成了京剧在短视频平台上的推广。故选 D。

根据第一段最后一句“With the application of new technologies such as social communication and immersive (沉浸式的) experiencing, short video platforms are seeing more
users, becoming a shining spot of new Internet media.(随着社交传播、沉浸式体验等新技术的应用,短视频平台迎来了更多的用户,成为互联网新媒体的一大亮点)”和文章最后一句“The seconds, or minutes long videos, along with unlimited possibilities as well as richness of styles,
have produced remarkable achievements in promoting traditional Chinese culture. The Creative Combination of Culture and Technologies(文化与科技的创造性结合)适合作文章最佳标题。

说明如果扁平人物被描绘得过于复杂,可能会分散读者对主要角色的注意力,引出下文关于角色抢镜的论述“Imagine the main character is taking a taxi to a hotel. If we make the taxi driver a round
character, the focus could shift from the main character to the taxi driver, potentially taking
attention away from the main plot.(想象一下,主角正在乘出租车去酒店。
40 .下文“They together create tension and richness in a literary work. Flat characters provide

分析可知,“ the smell of old books hangs in the air”为之前名词短语“these quiet halls” 的非限制性定语从句,先行词在从句中作地点状语,用关系副词“where” 引导从句。故填 where。
故填 and。
故填 to
demonstrate。
主语“a 17th-century edition of the Book of Han”与动词“contain”之间为逻辑上的主动关系,现在分词形式。故填 containing。
故填 a。

故填 was effected。
故填What。
66 .Dear Albert,
I hope this letter finds you well. Learning that you wonder whether a career planning course is needed for Chinese high school students, I’m writing to share with you my opinion on it.
I believe that introducing career planning courses in Chinese high schools is crucial. The
society, as you know, is increasingly competitive now. It can’t be better for our high school study and college major selection if we have a general plan and a top-level design for our future career
in high school. It is highly recommended to invite university professors or career planners to guide students in career planning. Organizing students to participate in various social practice is also
preferable, which helps to expose the students to the characteristics of all walks of life, and locate their employment directions.
Thank you for considering my opinion. I’m confident that the course will benefit students in their future endeavors.
Yours,
Li Hua

The next day, we were glad to see the bird was well enough. It was singing and bouncing around in the rescue box. Obviously, it had regained its energy! Realizing it was fully ready for freedom, we took the box outside, placed the bird in my palm and petted it softly with mixed
feelings. I held the bird up and let it go. The bird was circling above us as if to express gratitude. Jack and I looked at each other with a broad smile, feeling that we were qualified volunteer
wildlife rescuers now.
