My son, a kindergartner in a large public school, has a language-based learning disability. He was mainstreamed in a general education classroom and shadowed throughout the day by an aide. We requested this support so he could manage basic 5-year-old tasks that he struggled with like lining up or understanding instructions. The aide stayed by his side for years, guiding him to focus and complete assignments. This constant support aimed to help him in a fast-paced school environment where he needed more time to process.
However, I later understood this continuous help had an unexpected negative impact. My
son became “prompt-dependent”, always requiring endless nudges (轻推) to begin his work and repeated cues to complete it. This long-term assistance fostered a “learned helplessness”,
increasing his reliance on others and decreasing his self-esteem. I realized that students buoyed by too much help become less motivated to act on their own, and he needed to learn independence
earlier.
At age 12, he still often looked to me for homework assistance. So, last summer, I decided
it was time for a change. I enrolled him in a local nature day camp, this time, without an aide. I was nervous, but I knew he needed a safe environment to test his independence and build
self-reliance.
At camp, my son faced real-life challenges. He encountered Tommy, a boy who often
yelled. One day, Tommy told him to “shut up”. My son, encouraged by a counselor (辅导员) , bravely responded, “Keep your mean thoughts in your head.” This empowering moment helped him handle the situation. His glasses also fell into the river during canoeing, but a counselor
quickly retrieved them. These experiences proved he could manage new environments with minimal support.
Now, my son attends a small, specialized school where he develops his autonomy. His

peers encourage him. He brings home imperfect artwork, completed solely by himself, which I
prize. He sometimes forgets his water bottle, but I am not concerned. I love seeing who he is in his newfound freedom, growing more self-reliant and confident each day.

Philosophy departments are ruled by rankings. Philosophers are supposed to be clear
thinkers; shouldn’t they see through thought traps like this The problem is that metrics (衡量标准) are appealing. Once something is ranked, it becomes almost impossible to get that ranking out of your head. Over time, this can lead to what C. Thi Nguyen calls “value capture”.
Nguyen, a philosophy professor, is also a rock climber. When he first took up the sport,
what he loved was the joy of using his body in challenging ways. Routes have difficulty scores;
these motivated him. But soon he started chasing higher scores, believing the point of climbing
was to conquer increasingly demanding routes. “The more desperately I wanted it, the more
unpleasant my climbing got,” he wrote. His climbing became less about joy and more about
winning. It wasn’t until he saw another climber focus on the beauty of the climb, not just reaching the top, that Nguyen remembered his original passion. He then stopped chasing scores and truly
enjoyed the climbing itself.
It’s hard to resist “value capture” because our real values are often unclear. We might enjoy cooking, for instance, but then start believing that only more complicated recipes are truly better.
We might love traveling, but then try to visit too many places in a rush, thinking a “successful”
trip means doing it all. There’s often a gap between what is measured and what truly matters. As Nguyen points out, “Many of the important things in life seem to consistently defy measurement.”
To avoid being controlled by external measures, Nguyen suggests we learn from games. Games teach us the difference between a “goal” and a “purpose” . For example, when playing
charades (打哑谜猜字游戏) with family, your goal might be to win, but your real purpose is to have fun and connect with loved ones. By understanding this crucial difference, we can focus on our deeper purposes and avoid letting external scores capture our true values.
8 .How does “value capture” affect us according to the passage
A .It misdirects our true priorities. B .It makes our aims much higher.
C .It defines our personal purposes. D .It helps us clarify our external goals.
9 .What does Nguyen’s climbing story primarily illustrate
A .The joy of accomplishing a task. B .The risk of losing inner pleasure.
C .The difficulty of mastering skills. D .The importance of observing others.
10 .According to the passage, why do people follow external metrics
A .Outside standards never lead us wrong. B .Rankings create pressure to compete.
C.External metrics promise a clear path to success. D.Clear aims are easier to grasp than inner worth.
11 .How does the example of charades help explain Nguyen’s solution
A.Proving that games don’t have external rules. B.Showing that winning matters most in games.
C .Suggesting that family games are meaningless. D .Distinguishing winning from genuine enjoyment.

From hypersonic aircraft to nuclear-powered submarines, today’s most advanced defense systems rely on refractory alloys (耐热合金) — metals that do not melt or weaken easily, even in extreme heat. Based on elements like tungsten and molybdenum, these alloys have some of the
highest melting points of any metals. Their atoms are held together by strong chemical bonds that resist deforming at extreme temperatures, making them essential for components exposed to
intense heat, stress and radiation.
However, most of these special alloys were designed many years ago. Today, we have new ways to make things, like 3D printing. 3D printing is great because it can make complex metal
parts with very little waste. But when we try to 3D print these old alloys, they often crack or break. It would take too much time to redesign them using old methods.
To address this challenge, a research team at Arizona State University and UNSW Sydney is using reinforcement learning — a form of AI — to design new high-temperature alloys. The AI system explores thousands of possible alloy combinations virtually, evaluating each against
criteria including strength at extreme temperatures, resistance to oxidation (氧化), weight, cost,
and whether it can be reliably 3D-printed. Alloys that perform well are “rewarded” while those
that fail are discarded. Over repeated cycles, the system learns which chemical combinations work best.
This new method is showing great results. For example, NASA used a similar computer
method to design an alloy called GRX-810. This alloy is “1,000 times more durable at high
temperatures” than older ones. Also, making metals the old way wastes a lot of material. But with 3D printing and these new AI designs, we can make parts with almost no waste, which is good for our planet.
Of course, there are still challenges. AI models require extensive experimental data to learn from, and data on refractory alloys is limited. The metal powders for 3D printing are also
expensive. But this new way of using AI to design metals is a big step forward. It helps us make advanced machines for the future, faster and better.
12 .What does the initial description of refractory alloys indicate
A .Their properties are easily changed. B .Their invention is really quite recent.
C .They are crucial for modern defense. D .They share features with most metals.
13 .Why does the research team use reinforcement learning
A .To precisely copy existing metal designs. B .To fully automate laboratory experiments.
C .To find superior novel chemical mixtures. D .To replace all human research entirely.
14 .What represents a major obstacle for AI alloy advancement
A .The lack of high-quality data. B .The higher cost of AI systems.
C .The complexity of AI methods. D .The shortage of trained workers.
15 .Which of the following is the best title for the passage

Mika Sipponen, a materials chemist at Stockholm University, went for a swim in a lake. 16 It turned out that the water was rich in plant matter, so Sipponen wondered if lignin (木质素), which is found in wood, could help to condition (保养) hair.
17 Experiments showed that it smoothed the surface of hair and reduced the
force that it took to drag a comb through hair. Because lignin can be sourced from wood waste,
Sipponen reasoned, hair products made from it would be more environmentally friendly than those made with some of the standard ingredients.
An average head hosts 120,000 to 150,000 hairs. A thin oily layer coats the outside of healthy hair, while the interior is mostly protein, particularly a type of keratin (角蛋白).
18
Bio-inspired molecules (仿生分子) that target keratin have already found their way into
some products. An early keratin-repairing molecule came from the lab of biotechnologist Artur
Cavaco-Paulo. His team found peptides (肽) that seemed to have the right chemistry to stick to
other keratin-related peptides. 19 His team ended up identifying around 1,200 promising peptides. Experiments showed that one of them could find and stick to the ends of hair where
bonds in the keratin had been broken.
Shampoos and conditioners can contain dozens of ingredients, and how these interact
influences how well the products work. 20 Even though consumers may seek greener alternatives, the most important criterion for them is still whether a product works. But because hair care products are so frequently used, changes that make them better for the environment can add up. After all, everyone washes their hair.
A .So, they might be used for hair repair.
B .Afterwards, he noticed that his hair felt smooth.
C .The hair care market is worth tens of billions of dollars.
D .Researchers can’t just replace one molecule with a “greener” one.
E .His team made a mixture of lignin and coconut oil, and it worked.
F .Thus, repairing damaged keratin is a focus of hair care technology.
G .When washing their hair, people are spreading products across that area.

by an ugly, noticeable dent (凹陷) which I’ve never bothered to fix. Whenever asked why, I will shake my head. Only I know it’s a reminder of an unforgettable afternoon.
It was a typical summer. After work, I was driving down a neighborhood street in my
Jaguar, going a bit too fast. I was half-listening to the radio, half-watching for kids rushing out from between parked cars, and I slowed down when I thought I saw something move. But as my car passed, no kids appeared. Instead, a brick crashed into the side of my door with a sickening thud (闷响) .
I braked hard and reversed to the spot where the brick had been thrown and then quickly
jumped out of the car. There appeared a clear dent on my right door! My blood almost boiled.
Seeing a boy, no older than 10, with another brick in his hand, I frowned fiercely, eyes flashing
with anger, and stormed to him, “What was that all about ” my voice was tight and sharp. “My car is damaged. Look at this dent …”
“Please mister... Please, I’m sorry... I didn’t know what else to do,” his eyes were filled
with terror, a blood stain on his elbow, and he begged. “I’m sorry... No one would stop. My sister fell out of her wheelchair — I can’t lift her up!” He pointed to a parked car, his voice breaking.
Besides it, there was his sister, lying on the ground, bleeding from fresh scrapes (擦伤) and cuts. Her wheelchair was tipped over nearby. “Would you please help me get her back into her
wheelchair She’s hurt and she’s too heavy for me,” said the boy. Hearing this, I felt upset and the anger that had burned in my chest a moment ago vanished completely, replaced by a rush of shock and overwhelming guilt.

根据文章第二段““The more desperately I wanted it, the more unpleasant my climbing got,” he wrote. His climbing became less about joy and more about winning.(‘我越是急切地想要完成那条路线,我的攀岩就越令人难受。’他写道。他的攀岩活动不再仅仅是为了享受乐趣,而更多是为了追求胜利。)”可知,Nguyen 的攀岩经历主要说明被分数裹挟会失去内心的快乐。故选 B。
10 .细节理解题。根据文章第三段的“It’s hard to resist “value capture” because our real values are often unclear.(人们往往难以抗拒‘价值捕获’的诱惑,因为我们的真正价值往往并不明
和“There’s often a gap between what is measured and what truly matters. As Nguyen points out, “Many of the important things in life seem to consistently defy measurement.”(通常,所测量的内容与真正重要的事物之间会存在差距。
To avoid being controlled by external measures, Nguyen
suggests we learn from games. Games teach us the difference between a “goal” and a “purpose” .
For example, when playing charades (打哑谜猜字游戏) with family, your goal might be to win,
but your real purpose is to have fun and connect with loved ones. By understanding this crucial
difference, we can focus on our deeper purposes and avoid letting external scores capture our true values.(为了避免受外界因素的控制,Nguyen 建议我们从游戏中汲取经验。
D。

47 .Possible version
I rushed over to the girl, knowing exactly what to do. I knelt down carefully, my hands gentle as I avoided the girl’s bleeding scrape. “They look serious and we need to go to the
hospital!” I glanced at the boy standing beside me. He nodded repeatedly, tears blurring his eyes
but relief softening his tense shoulders. Instead of lifting the girl back into the wheelchair, I got
her into the back seat of my Jaguar, totally ignoring the dent. “Don’t worry; we’ll get help soon,” I said, my voice warm and steady, trying to make up for my earlier harshness. After putting the
wheelchair into my trunk, we hurried to the hospital, where the girl got timely and effective treatment. “Thank you so much for helping me,” the girl said softly, her voice trembling with gratitude.
Leaving the hospital, I looked at the dent on my car. It was still there like a scar. The sun shone on the polished body of the Jaguar, making the ugly mark even more noticeable, but I felt no
annoyance, only a calm gratitude. I reached out and traced the edge of the dent with my fingertips, my mind replaying the boy’s plea and the girl’s soft weep. Possible version 1 This dent, which I once wanted to fix immediately, is now my most precious reminder: to slow down, to set aside my own haste, and to never ignore someone in need. I will never fix it, for it is not a flaw — it is a
lesson that I carry with me every time I drive. Possible version 2
The dent on my Jaguar still there, a permanent mark. But it no longer felt like damage. It felt like a reminder — a reminder that sometimes, the “brick” that hits you isn’t an attack. It’s a cry for help, a chance to slow down, to see the world beyond your own speed, and to be the person who stops. To this day, that dent is still on my car. And I’ll never fix it.
Possible version 3
It reminds me every day to slow down, to set aside my own haste, and to never ignore someone in need. I don’t fix it because it’s not a flaw; it’s a gift, a constant reminder ofthe day a small boy’s courage taught me what truly matters in life.
