Park Climate Initiatives
Like parks around the world, those in our region are feeling the impacts of climate change. As a registered nonprofit based in San Francisco, the Parks Conservancy is working in
collaboration with the Presidio Trust and the National Park Service to help these parks — and the communities that depend on them — build resilience (韧性) against the backdrop of rapid
environmental shifts. We also aim to increase understanding of climate-related threats to our
parks, our local communities, and the planet, while driving meaningful action to address them.
This work looks a lot of ways, and often connects across multiple programs, projects, and park boundaries. It’s all done in partnership with agencies, community partners, and community members, and reflects the need to address climate change at different scales.
Here are some programs of our climate work. Explore more of its depth and breadth by clicking the blocks below!
1 .What is the main goal ofthe Parks Conservancy’s climate work?
A .To connect and act. B .To warn and appeal.
C .To argue and reserve. D .To preserve and educate.
2 .Which project has opened application channels for joining?
A .Peak Health. B .Sea Level Rise in the Parks.

As evening falls over the Summer Palace, the sky fills with sharp calls and fast-moving
shapes of Beijing Swifts (北京雨燕). These birds have been part of the city’s spirit for centuries, for their return means summer is here. But this familiar sight has begun to fade, with their
numbers dropping sharply.
Into this story stepped Terry Townshend, a British naturalist who had made Beijing his
home. He discovered that the city lies along a major flyway for migratory birds. For Terry, the
swift, a bird that only touches down to nest, became a window into this hidden side of the capital.
The biggest question remained: Where did these birds, born beneath Beijing’s roofs, go for half the year? In 2014, Terry led an international team. Working with researchers from China,
Sweden, and the UK, they began at the Summer Palace. They gently caught 31 swifts and placed geolocators on them. It was an act of trust: setting them free, hoping they would return.
One year later, that trust paid off. The returning birds revealed an astonishing journey:
30,000 kilometers from Beijing, over Central Asian deserts, across Arabia, and down Africa’s
coast to wintering grounds in Namibia and South Africa. The discovery was more than a scientific breakthrough; it was a story. By mapping their flight path, Terry helped people see these birds no longer as unknown dots in the sky, but as living beings whose lives span (横跨) continents.
Modern science finally unlocked the secrets ofthe Beijing swift’s extreme airborne lifestyle and transcontinental migration — mysteries that had eluded observers for centuries.
With the migration route known, targeted conservation could begin. Terry’s map did what words alone could not. It turned unseen miles into a journey the world could finally see. That story
starts by just watching the sky, waiting for a swift to bring its secrets home.
4 .What has made Beijing Swifts part of the city’s spirit for centuries?
A .Their mysterious winter disappearance.
B .Their sharp calls and fast-moving shapes.
C .Their arrival marking the start of summer.
D .Their habit of nesting only on ancient roofs.
5 .What did Terry and his team do at the Summer Palace in 2014?
A .They mapped the flight path of the swifts.
B .They studied swifts’ habitats and behavior.

A .Puzzled. B .Touched. C .Motivated. D .Interrupted.
7 .What can be learned from Terry Townshend’s work?
A .Nature will have its course. B .The early bird catches the worm.
C .Rome was not built in a day. D .A picture is worth a thousand words.

When there is less sunlight, many people feel their mood drop. About 5% of adults have a condition called seasonal affective disorder (SAD), a type of seasonal depression. Many more
people experience a milder “winter blues.”
A good way to prevent this is to use a light box, starting in the fall. Dr. Dorothy Sit, a
psychiatrist, says, “Research shows that using bright light therapy (治疗) in the morning can
greatly help reduce the symptoms (症状) of seasonal depression.” People usually sit in front of a special light box for about 30 minutes every morning. Making this a regular habit is very
important for it to work throughout the dark season.
Studies have found that light therapy can be as effective as antidepressant medicine for some people. Some use both, and this combination can be very helpful. Many people feel better within just one week of starting.
Our bodies need daylight to regulate our internal 24-hour clock, which controls when we
feel sleepy or awake. Because this internal clock isn’t perfect, it needs a daily reset. Morning light, entering through our eyes, gives our brain the signal to reset itself. “It helps sync our off-schedule body clock with the outside world,” explains expert Michael Terman.
You don’t need to have severe depression to benefit from a light box. It can also help
people with milder mood changes. If you feel low on energy and mood when autumn arrives, it
might be worth trying. However, it’s always a good idea to talk to a doctor about your symptoms. Remember, the lack of light isn’t the only reason for feeling down in winter. Cold weather often keeps people indoors, which can lead to social isolation (孤单) and sadness. Light therapy won’t help with the blues caused by loneliness. It’s important to stay connected with friends and keep
doing activities you enjoy.
To feel your best during the darker months, combine light therapy with other healthy habits: laugh often, spend time with friends, eat well, and stay active.
8 .What is the function of morning light according to paragraph 2?
A .It significantly improves eyesight. B .It offers a treatment for depression.
C .It enhances outdoor exercise effects. D .It replaces the need for social activities.
9 .What does the underlined word “sync” in paragraph 4 most probably mean?
A .Match up. B .Slow down. C .Calm down. D .Warm up.
10 .What could you do to stay away from loneliness in winter?
A .Keep a balanced diet. B .Spend more time sleeping.
C .Stay socially active and engaged. D .Take antidepressant medicine daily.
11 .What is the main purpose of the text?
A .To compare various mental therapies.
B .To recommend a solution for winter blues.
C .To introduce different types of the depression.
D .To explain the causes of seasonal mood changes.

Dreschel is going for his daily morning walk around Thalangama Wetland, in Sri Lanka’s capital Colombo. The sun casts a warm glow over flowering pink water lilies (睡莲) as a farmer washes down his water buffalo. A kingfisher hovers (盘旋) nearby.
But this hasn’t always been the case. About 15 years ago, Thalangama’s wetlands were polluted and filled with rubbish. Dreschel, the country manager at the International Water
Management Institute (IWMI) in Colombo, recalled a decade ago he began cleaning the lake
alone. Surprisingly, passersby stopped to help. Inspired the community formed the Thalangama Wetland Watch.
Colombo, a Ramsar wetland city, located in a river basin and naturally trending to floods,
relies on its wetlands as natural flood barriers, absorbing 40% of floodwaters. They also sink
carbon, purify air, and control temperatures. Historically central to local life, they now help reduce climate change, pollution, and stress for residents in high-rise buildings.
It is said that after significant flooding events the government realized wetlands are a
significant flood control mechanism and began to act, launching a revival strategy to restore these critical ecosystems. The metro Colombo wetland management strategy was introduced in 2016,
which aims to include wetlands in urban planning, prevent further wetland loss, restore the
ecosystems and involve the local community in their conservation. Following that, wetlands were included into urban infrastructure by constructing cycling tracks, jogging paths and recreational areas around them. Invasive species were almost cleaned and new soil and wetland plants were
introduced to attract birds and other animals.
Green infrastructure projects have reconnected people with Colombo’s wetlands.
Communities like Wetland Watch now maintain them, boosting property values. The Ramsar status temporarily stopped wetland destruction.
But an expert warns that coordinated efforts are essential to resist growing flood risks. He emphasizes that public education on wetlands is crucial for urban resilience. Another notes a
fundamental urgency to protect these ecosystems. “If we lose our wetlands, Colombo will be unlivable.”
12 .What is the author’s purpose in mentioning Dreschel’s morning walk?
A .To recommend a way to protect wetlands.
B .To show Dreschel’s healthy and peaceful life.
C .To present a scene full of life around The wetland.
D .To suggest benefits of morning walks in Sri Lanka.
13 .What is the function of the wetland?
A .Releasing the impact of floods. B .Providing residential areas for people.
C.Preventing climate change and pollution. D.Improving air quality by removing pollutants. 14 .What can be inferred about the government’s restoration measures?
A .They removed all invasive species. B .They integrated wetlands into urban life.
C .They prioritized economy over ecology. D .They relocated communities over wetlands.
15 .Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A .How a Walk Saved a Wetland B .Colombo: A City Built on Wetlands
C .The Future of Sri Lanka’s Waterways D .Wetlands: From Wasteland to Lifeline

Grandpa Wang had been a calligraphy master in a small town for over sixty years. Every
morning, he would set up his brush, ink, and rice paper on the old wooden table by the window,
practicing characters stroke by stroke with steady hands. His grandson, Zhiyuan, now sixteen, had watched this routine countless times since childhood but had never shown interest in learning.
“Too slow, too old-fashioned,” he would tell his friends, scrolling through his phone while Grandpa wrote.
One Saturday afternoon, Zhiyuan burst through the door, his face flushed with frustration. He threw his backpack on the floor and sank into the sofa. Grandpa Wang continued writing, his brush moving gracefully across the paper. After a long silence, he asked gently, “School not going well?”
Zhiyuan sighed heavily. “We have this school culture festival next month. Each class needs to present something about traditional Chinese culture. My classmates recommended me to
organize our class performance because I’m ‘the Chinese kid’. But I don’t know anything! I can’t even write proper characters. Everyone expects me to be some kind of expert just because my
grandparents are from China.”
Grandpa Wang put down his brush and looked at his grandson. For a moment, the room
was silent except for the soft ticking of the old clock on the wall. Then Zhiyuan continued, his
voice cracking, “I told them my grandpa is a calligraphy master. I don’t know why I said that.
Maybe I wanted to sound impressive. Now they want me to do a calligraphy demonstration during the festival. Me! I can’t even hold a brush properly.”
Tears welled up in Zhiyuan’s eyes. He had always taken pride in being modern, fitting in with his friends, distancing himself from these “old traditions.” Now, for the first time, he felt ashamed — not of his heritage, but of his ignorance of it.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为 150 左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Noticing Zhiyuan, his grandpa asked him to sit at the table.

46 .Dear David,
I’m excited to share with you our school’s recent Bilingual Reading Month. It was a fantastic experience!
During the month, I read classic Chinese poems by Li Bai and the English translations. I also tried reading short stories by O. Henry in the original English version. It was amazing to see how the two languages expressed ideas differently, yet the feelings remained powerful. I came to understand great stories connect people across cultures. Reading in both languages not only
improved my English but also gave me a fresh appreciation for our own literary heritage.
Have you ever read any Chinese classics? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
Yours,
Li Hua 【导语】本篇书面表达属于应用文。要求考生给美国朋友 David 写一封邮件,分享学校以“读

Noticing Zhiyuan, his grandpa asked him to sit at the table. “It’s never too late to learn”,
said Grandpa while he placed the brush in his grandson’s trembling hand. “Hold it like this —
firm but gentle,” he demonstrated. For hours, they sat together, the old man’s steady hand guiding the young one’s. Character after character, Zhiyuan felt something shift inside him. The strange
strokes began to make sense. When he finally wrote “和” (harmony) on his own, Grandpa’s eyes sparkled with pride. Night after night, they practiced together. He stopped seeing calligraphy as old-fashioned and began feeling its quiet beauty, even kind of looking forward to the big day.
Finally came the culture festival day. Surrounded by curious schoolmates, Zhiyuan’s heart raced. But as he touched the brush, calm washed over him. Stroke by stroke, he wrote —
characters flowing like water Gasps turned into murmurs of admiration then into applause

Looking up, he spotted Grandpa standing at the back, nodding with pride in his eyes. With a
smile, deep faith welled up in Zhiyuan’s heart. This wasn’t just writing. It was a legacy passed
down through generations. He was proud to carry it forward.
