During my visit to Toronto, Tanmay and his family took me on a day trip to the Blue Mountain Resort, a lovely destination specially chosen by Tanmay for me, after he learned I was somewhat upset in those days because of my layoff and felt doubtful about the goals and lifestyle I used to have. And the journey stayed with me long after the ride was over.
In their car, I discovered a delightful family tradition: “One Song Each”, where everyone got their moment in the tune, whether it was the two-year-old’s favorite
rhyme, the parents’ nostalgic (怀旧的) hit, or the guest’s surprise pick. No arguments, no complaints — every person’s choice mattered, no matter how young or old. With every track, we stepped a little deeper into one another’s private landscapes, learning the flavors that shape our choices and stories behind the songs.
When we hit Blue Mountain, the music stopped — not just the soundtrack, but the shared rhythm built on the way. We stepped out, laughed, explored, and took in breathtaking scenic views, with peace settling inside me and the wildflowers thriving (茁壮成长) among the rocks reawakening my hope to start anew. But what dealt a blow to me
was what happened on the return journey: As soon as we got back into the car,
someone gently reminded us, “It’s my turn now.” No one had forgotten. The
unspoken order of songs and turns had stayed complete, as if regard had quietly taken root in all our minds.
Sometimes, life lessons come without lectures. Just an ear full of people and one song at a time could work wonders. In that car, music ceased to be mere sound and
became a shared gift. Harmony lives not just in music but in the silence; the patient wait for one’s turn, the ear that leans in with love, and the space we give each other.

Piles of pancakes, pyramids of cakes, endless rows of fruits. Breakfast buffets across the world promise abundance (充裕) — and often deliver oversupply, behind which lies a darker truth: food waste.
The UN’s Food Waste Index Report stresses that the latest data from 2022
shows 1.05 billion tonnes of food were wasted, with almost 28% coming from food service and that buffet breakfasts generated more than twice as much waste as plated breakfasts — around 300g compared to 130g for made-to-order meals.
“Wasted food means wasted resources, and once in landfill, it gives off
greenhouse gases that harm the planet. Cutting food waste is a powerful way to make a difference — and breakfast is a smart place to start,” says Jocelyn Doyle, head of
The Sustainable Restaurant Association.
试卷第 5 页,共 14 页
According to Kelly Haws, an expert in consumer behavior, buffets often make people eat more due to the “variety effect” — more choice encourages greater
consumption. “Self-service also leads to oversized servings,” she says, adding that the abundance of buffet-style breakfasts can lead consumers to “take more food, consume more food, and feel less guilty about wasting that food”. The desire to get one’s
money’s worth from a fixed-price buffet adds to the urge to eat more than is needed.
Hotels across the world are adopting some measures to cut food waste in
buffets, like downsizing cakes and using smaller plates. While many travelers are leaning towards more intentional, waste-conscious dining, hotels still face the
complex task of meeting diverse guest expectations. Striking the right balance
between sustainability and service is no small feat, says Jocelyn, especially at
breakfast, where the variety guests expect often conflicts with efforts to minimize oversupply.
Ultimately, Jocelyn recommends that hotels consider removing the buffet
altogether and promote their breakfast experience instead. “In addition to reducing waste, more hotels should redefine themselves around thoughtfulness and
sustainability. A small, thoughtfully planned, cooked-to-order breakfast menu can provide a more restful experience for guests,” she says.
8 .Why is the UN report cited
A .To prove breakfast buffets cause great food waste.
B .To show people prefer buffets to plated breakfasts.
C .To emphasize that food service needs to be improved.
D .To demonstrate that food waste is a universal problem.
9 .What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A .Reasons for overeating at buffets. B .Potential harms of buffets to climate.
C.Crucial factors in wasting behavior. D.Disadvantages of self-service breakfasts.
10 .What do the underlined words “no small feat” mean in paragraph 5
A .A brave attempt. B .A tough challenge.
C .An absolute necessity. D .An ongoing process.
试卷第 6 页,共 14 页
11 .What does Jocelyn probably advise hotels to do in the end
A .Upgrade their breakfast menu regularly. B .Create a more enjoyable dining atmosphere.
C.Prioritize energy saving and sustainability. D.Replace buffets with made-to-order breakfasts.

The family, wing length and wing color of tropical butterflies all influence their ability to withstand rising temperatures, say researchers at the University of
Cambridge. They believe this could help identify species whose survival is under threat from climate change.
Butterflies use two strategies to fight against changing air temperatures: thermal buffering (热缓冲) — adaptive behavior like flying to a shaded area to maintain a
steady body temperature, and thermal tolerance — dependence on physiological (生理学的) mechanism to prevent overheating. Both of these strategies are needed to
deal with climate change. However, deforestation leading to a potential lack of forest cover means tropical butterflies may have to rely on physiological method.
Researchers cooperated with the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute
(STRI) to study thermoregulation (体温调节) strategies of tropical butterflies. To assess thermal buffering abilities, scientists collected data from multiple habitats in Panama. Equipped with hand-held nets, they took the temperature of over 1,000
butterflies and compared each to that of the surrounding air. To assess thermal tolerance, at STRI Gamboa facilities, a few butterflies were placed in a glass jar within a water bath with a steadily increasing temperature.
The results showed butterflies with large wings tended to have higher thermal buffering ability, but a lower thermal tolerance. Butterflies with dark wings were
found to tolerate heat better than those with pale wings. Notably, butterflies from the Lycaenidae family with small, bright wings had the poorest thermal buffering and
thermal tolerance abilities.
Lead author Esme Ashe-Jepson said, “As temperatures continue to rise, and
试卷第 7 页,共 14 页
forests get smaller and further apart because of deforestation, butterflies which rely on their surroundings to avoid high temperatures may not be able to travel between
forests, or deal with increasingly common heatwaves.” If temperatures continue to
rise alongside deforestation and loss of cool microclimates, there is a very real threat that we could lose many species in this family.
12 .What might be the main focus of the research
A .Survival strategies of at-risk butterflies.
B .Factors in butterflies’ heat-resistant abilities.
C .Butterfly species endangered by warming.
D .Physical characteristics of tropical butterflies.
13 .What can be learned about the thermoregulation strategies
A .Thermal buffering isn’t always possible to use.
B .Thermal tolerance tends to be more effective.
C .Thermal tolerance isn’t limited by surroundings.
D .Thermal buffering interacts with thermal tolerance.
14 .How did the researchers reach their conclusions
A .By comparing 1,000 different species.
B .By doing small-scale water-bath trials.
C .By referring to collected data of STRI.
D .By combining field and lab experiments.
15 .What do the researchers find
A .The paler-winged tolerate higher temperature.
B .Smaller butterflies have lower thermal tolerance.
C .Darker butterflies are hardest hit by heatwaves.
D .The larger-winged stabilize body temperature better.

Studying can often seem overwhelming (压倒性的), with an endless list of tasks and limited time to achieve them. 16 These include setting up study routines, scheduling study breaks, goal breaking, distraction (使人分心的事物) removing, etc.
Establishing a routine is an excellent method for maintaining productivity while studying. Routines provide structure and enable you to stay focused. With a routine in place, you can determine what needs to be done and when to do it, which helps you
stay on target. To establish a study routine, consider studying at the same time each day. 17 Also, it can prepare your mind for focused study time.
While it may seem time-consuming, taking regular study breaks can help you be more productive.Rather than studying for hours at a stretch, try splitting your study
time into short-term sessions and taking a 10-minute break every hour or so. During the break, your brain is able to get a chance to rest and recharge. 18
Setting realistic and achievable goals is essential for improving productivity as well. Clear goals provide a sense of direction and purpose, which can help keep you motivated and focused. 19 This not only makes tasks less discouraging but also helps you to track progress and gain a sense of achievement as you complete
each task.
20 In order to counter this, consider studying in an environment with
minimal interruptions, such as a library or a quiet room in your home. Additionally,
you can use noise-canceling headphones or software that blocks websites that prevent you from concentrating to further limit interruption.
A .This will help your body develop a rhythm.
B .Distractions can significantly reduce productivity.
C .You can use a planner to map out your study sessions.
D .But productivity and success can be achieved with strategies.
E .Insufficient rest can result in exhaustion and reduced attention.
F .Break large, tricky tasks down into smaller, more manageable ones.
G .Thus, your ability to focus and remember information will be improved.

his school held its fall carnival (嘉年华). I was so excited to take part in it. After we pulled into the parking lot, I immediately got off the car!
Walking around, I was attracted by a room where there were about fifteen
fishbowls and a basket full of Ping-Pong balls. There was only a high school girl in
the room. She was in charge of the game. I walked up to her and whispered, “How to play this game ” “Oh. It’s easy. All you have to do is throw a Ping-Pong ball into one of the fishbowls. And if you succeed, you can get whichever goldfish in the bowl you hit,” she said.
“Okay. I can do it. How much does it cost ” I said. The girl replied, “Fifteen
tries for a dollar.” “A dollar A whole dollar Well ... it is worth it. It is only a dollar, and I have ten of them,” I thought. Then I handed the pretty girl a dollar and she gave me a basket of fifteen Ping-Pong balls. I held the first one in my hand until it was
warm. Then I took aim and threw it off. At last, it hit the rim (边) of the closest fishbowl and bounced onto the floor. I was disappointed, but I had fourteen more tries.
Again and again I aimed and the ball bounced but without success. I was down to my last Ping-Pong ball and my spirit was low. I held the Ping-Pong ball for nearly a full minute before I took aim. Then I closed my eyes, and tossed the ball. I stopped
breathing and then opened my eyes, only to find the white ball was on the floor. I reminded myself that it was just a fish and tried to hold back the tears in my eyes.
The girl took one look at me and said, “Oh, honey, please don’t cry. Here, I’ll give you an extra shot, just because you tried so hard.”

故填the。

At last, I went to find my parents and showed them my new fish. The little goldfish swam happily in the plastic bag the girl gave me, its orange scales shining in the sunlight. My mom bent down and stroked my head gently, her eyes full of warmth. “It’s such a lovely little guy,” she said softly. Dad grinned and ruffled my hair, “You must have tried really hard for it, huh ” I nodded
proudly, telling them about the fifteen tries and the girl’s kind extra shot. Holding the bag carefully, I felt my heart filled with joy, forgetting all the disappointment just now.
“Well, honey. What are you going to spend the rest of your money on ” Dad asked. I
looked at the goldfish swimming around and thought for a second. “I don’t want to spend it
anymore,” I said firmly. “I want to save it to buy food for my goldfish.” Mom and Dad exchanged a smile. Later, we bought a small fishbowl and fish food with part of my money. Every day after that, I fed the goldfish and watched it swim. That little goldfish, a gift of kindness, became my
most precious treasure in childhood.
