The story of traffic signs is pretty interesting. It shows how people have tried to make travelling safer and better over time.
A long time ago, the Romans used big stones to show distances on their roads. These stones helped people know how far places were. They were like early signs to help people find their way.
The first real traffic signs showed up in Europe in 1903. The British government made four “Danger” signs to warn drivers about sharp turns (急转弯), crossroads, steep hills (陡坡), and bumpy roads (道路颠簸). They were the first signs to help people drive safely.
In 1968, the United Nations tried to make traffic signs the same everywhere. They used pictures, so the signs were easier for drivers from different countries to understand.
Today, some traffic signs are very smart and can even talk to cars! They help drivers know what’s happening on the road to keep everyone safe.

The toucan (巨嘴鸟) is a colourful bird. Take a look at these facts about toucans, and you may learn something you didn’t know before. Where do they live
Toucans can be found in the tropical forests of South America. Their home is in danger. The government asks people not to buy rainforest wood. It’s important to protect the habitat (栖息地) of toucans.
What do they look like
Toucans have a black body and a white neck. The colourful beak (鸟喙) is about 8 inches long. It makes up almost 1/3 of the bird’s total length. It may look pretty big, but thankfully, for the toucan, the beak is not too heavy. It is made of keratin (角蛋白), which makes it much lighter than you would think just by looking.
What do they eat and drink
Toucans use their beaks to eat different kinds of fruits, which happens to be the kind of food they eat most often. Sometimes toucans will choose to snack on insects, frogs, and eggs. Toucans get most of their water from the fruit they eat, so they don’t need to drink too much water.
Believe it or not!
Toucans can be rather lazy birds and they like to stay in one place generally. They don’t fly high up in the sky or very far away from home. They enjoy staying in trees with their delicious fruit to eat.
Wild cats are the predators of toucans in the rainforest. Other predators include larger birds. Some snakes may attack smaller toucans but typically are more interested in the toucans’ eggs instead.

My name is Robinson Crusoe, and I was born in the city of York in 1632. My father was a successful businessman. I had two elder brothers. One of them worked in the army (军队) and was killed during the war against Spain. The other was missing one day, and we never knew what happened to him. My father gave me a good education (教育) and wanted me to be a lawyer (律师).
However, I wanted to be a sailor and go to sea. My father was very angry with me. He didn’t understand why I wanted to leave his house, where I would have an easy and comfortable life.
“Two kinds of people go to sea,” he said, “They are the very poor people and the very rich people. The poor are foolish, having no other way to live. The rich own ships and can make money with them. You are neither too poor nor too rich. You are in the middle, so you should choose a middle way for your life. Stay at home with your mother and me. Your elder brother didn’t listen to me, and now he is dead. If you do not listen to me, you will have a difficult life.”
I tried to do what he wanted me to do, but I couldn’t. I spoke to my mother.
“Please ask Dad if he will let me have one voyage by sea,” I asked her. “When I return, I will live the life he wants me to live.”
Mum was angry. “Your father will not let you go. I don’t want you to go to sea either. It’s dangerous.”
I argued with my parents for another year. Then, I went to Hull with a friend who was going to London by ship. He invited me to go with him, and I agreed. I did not even tell my parents before leaving. I just went. That was how all my bad luck began.
