The 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami
On 26 December (Boxing Day), 2004, a major earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia under the Indian Ocean at 8:58 a.m. It was the most powerful earthquake recorded in Asia. A huge tsunami (known as the Boxing Day Tsunami) with waves up to 30 metres high cause devastation across many countries, killing over 200,000 people. There was little warning about it, so the tsunami took many by surprise. Although people felt the earthquake, the waves did not reach land for several hours in some places.
Look at the pictures and the title, predict the content of the passage, pay attention to the question word “how”, and predict how the girl will save people.
Making predictions
With new texts, it is useful to make predictions about the content from the title alone before you read on. You can predict what happens, and also which words might appear. Then check your predictions by skimming the text.
