How do you think the rivers helped ancient civilizations to develop?
Water Supply: Rivers provided fresh drinking water for people,
their farm animals, and the plants they grew.
Transportation and Trade: Rivers acted as natural "roads" for boats. Ancient civilizations used rivers to move goods and people easily, which helped trade and communication between different areas.
Settlement(定居): The reliable food and water allowed people to stop being nomads(游牧民) and settle down in one place. This led to the growth of villages, which later became large cities.
Further Thinking
Why are rivers still very important today? Give examples to support your opinions.
Provide drinking water: Many cities get clean water from rivers. For example, the Yangtze River supplies water to over 400 million people in China.
Help agriculture: Rivers offer water for irrigating farms. Like the Mississippi River in the US, which waters fields growing corn and soybeans.
Creating Electricity: Dams(水坝)are built on rivers to create hydropower. The flowing water spins turbines(水带动涡轮机旋转) to generate electricity for homes, schools, and factories.
...
What could we do to protect rivers?
stop dumping waste into rivers
reduce chemical use
plant trees along river banks
