A
Smart devices aren’t magic; they’re just connected machines with intelligent systems to help you work more efficiently and save time and money. They don’t directly lower the cost of heating your home or washing your clothes, but they do help you make better choices that bring great savings.
Take, for example, a smart plug (插头) in the basement that controls a wall heater: it is a 1500W unit, and in the winter, it usually runs for a few hours per day as needed. With the smart plug, you can make sure it’s off at night and when you leave the house without having to remember to turn it off by hand. If it is used even one hour less per day, that adds up to $8 in savings per month — enough to quickly cover the cost of the smart plug itself.
Devices and thermostats (恒温器) with built-in smart technology can be even more cost-efficient, since they can operate during off-peak hours or learn from your daily habits.
Typical cost savings of common smart devices
Device Smart vs. standard Average savings per year Savings percent Notes
Smart washer $900 vs. $600 $20 - $35 10% to 15% Mostly from cold cycles and off-peak use
Smart dryer $1,000 vs. $700 $25 - $50 15% to 20% Heat pump and scheduling combination
Smart fridge $2,000 vs. $1,200 $10 - $20 5% to 10% Minor direct savings; more convenience
Smart plug and power board $25 vs. $10 $10 - $15 — Cuts wasted power from devices
Note that while the costs listed are typical regular prices, many affordable smart devices are likely available from your energy provider at a huge discount.
21.What can help cover the cost of the smart plug quickly
A.Running it at night. B.Turning it off by yourself.
C.Using it during off-peak hours. D.Reducing its daily use by one hour.
22.Which device saves most yearly according to the table
A.Smart washer. B.Smart fridge. C.Smart dryer. D.Smart plug.
23.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A.To list data. B.To prove value. C.To teach skills. D.To compare prices.
B
It was early, and my husband had made me a cup of tea and placed it on the arm of a chair to cool down. We didn’t realize that our baby daughter Tamzin, who had just started moving around on her own, had noticed it. I must have looked away for only a few seconds when I heard a painful cry.
I turned around to see my daughter dropping the cup. Steam was rising from her arm. Thankfully, my husband had recently taken a first aid course. He immediately used cold water to cool the burn on her arm and chest. I could see her skin peeling and her whole left arm bleeding. I quickly reached for my phone to call 999, blaming myself for not moving that cup earlier.
The emergency operator told us we had done the right thing and advised us to keep cooling the burn until the ambulance arrived. I had already carefully removed her top, making sure it wasn’t sticking to her skin. Her arm was turning a frightening shade of pink, which made my stomach turn. Everything happened so quickly.
The ambulance arrived in just four minutes, though it felt like much longer. The doctor said our fast response likely prevented more serious burns, explaining that cooling the skin quickly is very important in such situations. We got on the ambulance quickly. On the way, Tamzin was crying but calmed down after receiving pain relief. In the hospital, the doctors wrapped her arm in cling film (透明薄膜) to protect it and then bandaged (用绷带包扎) it carefully. We were allowed to go home the next day. For the next two weeks, we returned regularly to have her bandages changed. After six weeks, she recovered well. She still has some small red marks, which should fade over time. She has been a very brave little girl throughout.
It goes without saying that we are now much more careful. It’s truly frightening how a child can be injured in just a matter of seconds.
24.What did the author do right before she heard Tamzin cry
A.She drank tea in the kitchen. B.She called her husband for help.
C.She put the hot drink out of reach. D.She turned her attention elsewhere briefly.
25.What is implied by the author’s feeling of “my stomach turn”
A.She needed to turn off the water. B.She decided to turn around quickly.
C.She was very hungry at that moment. D.She felt physically ill from what she saw.
26.What was the first step in treating Tamzin’s injury in the hospital
A.Keeping it open to prevent infection. B.Covering it with a clear protective layer.
C.Washing the wound with a special liquid. D.Bandaging her injured arm with bandages.
27.What does the author want to show in the last paragraph
A.Accidents can happen in a surprisingly short time.
B.Children should never be allowed in the kitchen.
C.Parenting requires attention every single second.
D.Carelessness can lead to unexpected consequences.
C
For the first time, scientists are tracking the migration of monarch butterflies (帝王蝶) across much of North America, actively monitoring individual insects on journeys from Ontario all the way to their overwintering colonies (群体) in central Mexico. This long-sought achievement could provide crucial insights into the poorly understood life cycles of hundreds of species of butterflies at a time when many are in dramatic decline.
A crucial engineering advancement led to the tracking breakthrough. Earlier this year, Cellular Tracking Technologies, a New Jersey-based company modified its butterfly tag (标签), called BluMorpho, in a way that allows its signals to be automatically detected by billions of Bluetooth-enabled devices, as long as a tagged butterfly passes within about 300 feet. This tiny solar-powered radio tag weighs just 60milligrams. Researchers have tagged more than 400 monarchs this year and are now following their journeys on a cellphone app — also developed by this company.
Most monarchs weigh 500 to 600 milligrams, so each tag-bearing migrator making the transcontinental journey is, by weight, like a half-raisin (葡萄干) carrying three uncooked grains of rice. “There’s nothing that’s not amazing about this,” said Cheryl Schultz, a butterfly scientist at Washington State University. The movements of monarchs always remain a mystery, and “now we will have answers that could help us turn the tide.”
Monarch tracking has relied on low-tech methods ever since it began in 1935. The biggest current effort is led by Monarch Watch, which oversees the annual sticker-tagging of more than 100,000 monarchs, though fewer than 1 percent are recovered in the winter colonies. Even when a monarch bearing a sticker tag is found, the information it yields is limited to the butterfly’s physical characteristics and the time and place it was tagged. That’s like trying to make sense of an entire book from only its first and last pages.
Now that those pages are being filled in, researchers can see that the story of the migration is even more dramatic than expected, with many monarchs blown far off course but using their strong wing muscles and remarkable navigational abilities to get back on track for Mexico.
28.What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about
A.How researchers tagged butterflies. B.How BluMorpho enables tracking.
C.Why monarchs’ journeys are followed. D.Why tracking tags were upgraded.
29.What can be inferred from Cheryl Schultz’s words
A.The migration of monarchs is amazing.
B.The tracking guarantees monarchs’ survival.
C.The mystery of monarchs has been solved.
D.The tiny tags represent an incredible advance.
30.What does the underlined sentence imply
A.Details of monarchs’ journeys are not revealed.
B.The sticker-tagged method is superior to others.
C.Monarchs’ physical features are difficult to learn.
D.Understanding of monarchs is limited to books.
31.Which can serve as the best title of the text
A.Tiny Tags: Revolutionizing Monarchs’ Tracking
B.Stickers vs. Bluetooth: Methods in Migration Study
C.Monarch Butterflies: A Species in Sharp Decline
D.BluMorpho: Guiding Monarchs to Return Home
D
In Myanmar’s Ayeyarwady River, there is a group of Irrawaddy dolphins that are best-known for giving a special signal — a wave of their tail — right before the fishers should cast nets. They even passed this skill on to their babies.
“This is a pretty rare phenomenon in terms of human and wildlife cooperation. So, we’re not only conserving on a species level, but also on a cultural level,” says Brian Smith, a river dolphin expert. “It’s a lesson to humanity about our relationship with wildlife.”
The Irrawaddy dolphins have another less-known trick: They spit water. It’s not just for fun, though. They use it to drive fish into tight groups so they’re easier to catch. Some scientists even think they might do it to impress a potential mate.
The Irrawaddy dolphins are one of the only six species that can live in freshwater. But they can also inhabit coastal waters — a quality shared by even fewer species. Their range includes parts of coastal waters of South and Southeast Asia, as well as three specific rivers: the Mekong in Cambodia, the Mahakam in Indonesia, and the Ayeyarwady in Myanmar. While the species as a whole is listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the populations in these three rivers are considered critically endangered, with fewer than 100 individuals estimated in each.
These rivers and coastal areas are often close to intense human activity, so they face serious threats from pollution, habitat loss, coal-carrying ships, and illegal electro-fishing — a practice in which fishers send electric currents through the water to kill fish. Electro-fishing not only dramatically reduces the fish populations that dolphins rely on, but it can also injure or kill the dolphins.
“Without urgent action, these cooperative, curious creatures could disappear forever, much like the Yangtze dolphins, which disappeared from China’s waters in 2006, despite conservation efforts, as well as Mexico’s Vaquita dolphins, down to around 10 individuals,” warns Smith.
32.Why do the Irrawaddy dolphins wave their tail
A.To drive away the fishers.
B.To ask the fishers to work together.
C.To have fun with the fishers.
D.To remind the fishers of their presence.
33.What can be learned about the Irrawaddy dolphins from paragraph 4
A.Fewer than 300 of them still exist.
B.Their habitat is limited to three rivers.
C.They know how to drive fish together.
D.They can also survive in coastal waters.
34.What does the author intend to do by mentioning the electro-fishing
A.To call on the government to take action.
B.To introduce the latest fishing method.
C.To show the threats faced by the dolphins.
D.To explain its effects on fish populations.
35.Which is the most critically endangered species
A.The Vaquita dolphins.
B.The Yangtze dolphins.
C.The Mekong dolphins.
D.The Mahakam dolphins.

Anxiety helps us meet our deadlines at work and deal with emergencies in life. But when this emotion is taken to the extreme, that’s when you might have an anxiew disorder. Luckily you can develop coping resources on your own through the things that you do. 36
Feel like you’re in control of your life
People who feel like they’re more in control of their life have better mental health. Do you find it hard to make decisions like what to wear, what to eat, who to date. which job to take up A way to overcome indecision and this lack of control in life is to do it badly. 37 Otherwise, you can spend hours deciding how you should go about doing something or what you should do.

If you had a panic attack and were embarrassed about it, forgive yourself; if you wanted to talk to someone, but couldn’t muster up the courage to do so, let it go. 39 You can’t begin to heal until you do this.
40
Whatever we do in life, whatever work we produce, however much money we make, we cannot be fully happy until we know that someone else needs us. It’s not that we need other people’s good words to keep going in life, but if we don’t do something with someone else in mind, we’ re at much higher risk for poor mental health. The famous neurologist Dr. Victor Frankel said, “For people who think there’s nothing to live for and nothing more to expect from life, the question is getting these people to realize that life is still expecting something from them.”
A.Have a purpose and meaning in life.
B.Change your relationship with others.

Summer came along, and my friend Neil suggested we ride our bicycles eighty miles from Saskatoon to Lake Diefenbaker for the official opening of the Gardiner Dam. He called this adventure a “Centennial Project”, thus turning an irresponsible joke into a noble pursuit. It took a bit of convincing to get parental permission but, after promising to be careful and make a collect call home from every town we went through, the answer was “yes”.
Neil was thirteen and I was twelve. We set off for our big adventure. I had a borrowed three-speed bicycle, five dollars in my pocket, and a cotton sleeping bag. A few hours into our trip, our joy kicked in as our bikes sped down the mile-long hill at the end of newly constructed, man-made Blackstrap Lake. We held on for dear life as we rushed faster on two wheels than we ever thought possible. It was a lot less fun when we had to climb up the other side of the valley.
Hours later we were in the middle of nowhere. Our water was gone, I had a flat front tire, and we were walking unsteadily under the sky. The highway extended on forever in front of us. We had been walking for what seemed like a century when a huge yellow Department of Highways truck pulled up.
“You boys need a ride ” “Yes, we do.” we replied, and seconds later two big workers threw our bikes up into the dump box and we were off. We told the men our story and they thought it quite amusing. Ten minutes later we were off-loaded at the Kenaston Garage, where I was able to get my tire fixed for fifty cents.
Just that quickly we were back on the road! The sun filled the western sky as we approached the little community of Hawarden. Night was coming and we cycled around the town looking for a place to sleep under the stars. What a great adventure! The schoolyard looked promising as it offered a shelter. Hopefully the night would be clear, as we had no umbrella.

M: Hello, everyone. Today, I’ll talk about how to design workplaces that inspire creativity. I hope you can find it useful. First, using color in an office can inspire creative thinking. Different colors can affect mood and energy levels. For example, blues and greens are calming and help create a peaceful environment. Second, offering a playroom where employees can take a break can relieve stress and allow workers to reset. A dedicated space for relaxation and interaction can also spark new ideas. Casual conversations often lead to creative solutions. Then let’s turn to lighting. Lighting is also important. If it is too dark, workers can feel sleepy; if it is too bright, it can make them feel anxious. Allowing more natural light into the office can increase productivity and uplift moods. If natural light is limited, using light bulbs can also be helpful. A clean space can make a big difference in how employees feel. Focus on keeping the office organized and make sure there's enough open space. When the office feels tidy, workers are more likely to feel relaxed and focused, which can promote clear thinking.

A
Smart devices aren’t magic; they’re just connected machines with intelligent systems to help you work more efficiently and save time and money.
【答案】21.D 22.C 23.B

C.This will give you greater sympathy for yourself.

wrap...in... 故填in。
故填have continued/ have been continuing。
故填who。
故填where。
故填a。

Dear Sean,
I am sorry to hear that you are suffering from addiction to mobile games. Actually, it is commonly seen that more and more teenagers get crazy about mobile games, which distract them from studies. Besides, it causes a lack of sleep, posing a threat to their health.
Therefore, to avoid it, I recommend you to manage your time wisely and responsibly. The less time you spent on online gaming, the less likely it is you will be addicted. Moreover, if I were you, I would prefer to engage with family and friends outdoors rather than sit on the couch looking down at your phone.
I do hope my suggestions will be helpful to you. Looking forward to your good news.
Yours,
Li Hua

Hungry, we entered a restaurant. When we talked about our story, the boss’s eyes lit up with warmth as she listened. Knowing we were two ill-prepared, underequipped and inexperienced kids, she didn’t laugh at us but seemed quite taken with us. Then she asked, “Where are you boys planning on sleeping tonight ” “We aren’t sure,” we replied. “Maybe the school playground ” She responded immediately, “Oh no, you won’t. You boys are coming home with me and staying at my house!”
Appreciating her offer, we followed her into a clean room. That night we found ourselves sweating in the heat of her three-story home. In the morning she fed us eggs and sent us on our way with best wishes for the successful completion of our project, pressing a couple of apples into our hands for the road. Without her, we might have slept on the school playground. Even today I still owed the successful adventure to the kindness, care and generosity of strangers.
