In his book Liber Abaci (1202), Fibonacci detailed the system and demonstrated its advantages over Roman numerals, particularly for accounting and commerce. A wildfire burns in the hills of a Los Angeles suburb, leaping from one land of dry brush to another as it approaches a group of homes. The landscaping at the first house burns, but the house itself stubbornly refuses to catch fire: any small flames that start along its walls or roof quickly die out. There’s no water in sight — the flames are being stopped by sound waves. This kind of fire suppression may soon play a vital role in fighting wildfires.
The key ingredients for a fire are heat, fuel and oxygen; take one away, and the flames fade. Sound waves can kill a fire by pushing oxygen molecules (分子) away from the fuel, preventing the fire getting the air it needs to continue burning. Geof Bruder, who researched heat energy transformation at NASA, co-founded Sonic Fire Tech to build a sound-generating machine for this purpose. “It’s basically vibrating (振动) the oxygen faster than the fuel can use it, so you block the chemical reaction,” Bruder says.
“The influence of sound on flames is well known,” says Albert Simeoni, head of the department of fire protection engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts. “The challenge is to expand the technology without creating disrupting or even damaging sound effects.” Sonic solves this challenge by using infra sound (次声波). While previous efforts used sound waves in the range of 30 to 60 hertz, which can be produced with simpler equipment, Sonic stays at or below 20 hertz. These waves can’t be heard by people, and they travel farther than higher-frequency waves.
“Sound waves can affect fire strongly, but they work only on small flames,” says Arnaud Trouvé, chair of the University of Maryland’s department of fire protection engineering. Nevertheless, homeowners and companies are ready to give it a try: Sonic is working with two California companies to demonstrate its technology. Homeowners have also signed contracts with the company, which is aiming to have 50 pilot tests early in 2026.

Some wounds won’t heal (康复) by themselves. Current chronic (慢性的) wound treatments often require surgery or lead to overuse of antibiotic, which can worsen the problem of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. “There’s an urgent need for personalized wound treatment,” says California Institute of Technology biomedical engineer Wei Gao.
For a study published in Science Advances, Gao and his colleagues used rodents (啮齿动物) to test a “smart bandage” that could make chronic wound healing easier and faster. It consists of a stretchable bandage attached to the skin, containing medication and a thin layer of electronics that monitors and wirelessly transmits data about the wound’s condition. The bandage can carry out controlled delivery of two treatments: a drug and an electric current.
The bandage builds on previous efforts to promote healing with electricity. This process, called electrotherapy, works both by attracting immune cells and skin cells to the wound and by boosting cell growth and division. A study published last year led by engineer Yuanwen Jiang, now at the University of Pennsylvania, described a bandage that monitored temperature and conductivity, using the collected data to control delivery of electrotherapy. The new research adds biochemical sensing capabilities. “Biochemical signals open up new opportunities because you’re able to really examine what's happening on a molecular (分子的) level. That’s the key novelty here.” Jiang says. Gao and his colleagues also added an electroactive material that releases an anti-infectious drug when stimulated by an electrode. Another electrode stimulates the wound directly.
The team tested the bandage on rodents with wounds and found that it accurately detected changes in infection and physical states at different stages of wound healing. The bandage’s combined treatments fully healed rodent wounds in two weeks. Each individual treatment achieved at least partial healing within that time, and untreated animals did not heal.
Researchers still need to investigate the bandage’s biosensor durability in human patients’ chronic wounds. “Requirements for the lifetime of the device are very different between rodents and human subjects,” Jiang says. “Stability over that extended period has not been tested yet.”

Machine learning sees reasoning as a categorization task with a fixed set of predetermined labels. It views the world as a fixed space of possibilities, calculating and weighing them all. This approach, of course, has achieved notable successes when applied to stable and well-defined situations such as chess or computer games. When such conditions are absent, however, machines struggle.
In 2008, Google launched Flu Trends, a web service that aimed to predict flu-related doctor visits using big data. The project, however, failed to predict the 2009 HINI flu outbreak. After several unsuccessful adjustments to its algorithm (算法), Google finally stopped the project in2015.
In such unstable situations, the human brain behaves differently. Sometimes, it simply forgets. Instead of getting trapped in irrelevant data, it relies only on the most recent information and makes creative decisions. This is a feature called intelligent forgetting. Adopting this approach, an algorithm that relies on a single data point would have reduced Google Flu Trends' prediction error by half.
Intelligent forgetting is just one dimension of psychological AI, an approach to machine intelligence that also includes other features of human intelligence such as causal reasoning, intuitive (直觉) psychology, and physics. Soon, this approach to Al will finally be recognized as fundamental for solving poorly-defined problems. Exploring these amazing features of the human brain will finally allow us to make machine learning smart.
One feature of psychological Al is that it is explainable. Until recently, researchers assumed that the more transparent an AI system was, the less accurate its predictions were. This mirrored the widespread but incorrect belief that complex problems always need complex solutions. Now, this idea will be laid to rest. As the case of flu predictions illustrates, powerful and simple psychological algorithms can often give more accurate predictions than complex algorithms. Psychological AI opens up a new vision for explainable AI: Instead of trying to explain complex systems, we can check first if psychological Al offers a simple and equally accurate solution.
Without the help of human psychology, it will become clearer that the application of this type of machine learning to unstable situations eventually runs up against impassable limitations. We will finally recognize that more computing power makes machines faster. Not smarter.
