Titanic Introduction
The Titanic was a British luxury ship. It sank in the North Atlantic Ocean after hitting an iceberg on its first voyage in 1912. Over 1,500 people died because there were not enough lifeboats. This disaster led to new international safety rules for ships.

Fendouzhe
The Fendouzhe is a Chinese deep-sea manned submersible. It can dive to about 10,984 meters in the Mariana Trench. In 2020, it made the world’s first repeated dives to the deepest part of the ocean. It collects samples and explores the deep sea for science and environmental research. This shows China’s leadership in deep-sea exploration technology.
“奋斗者”号是中国自主研发的全海深载人潜水器。它能在马里亚纳海沟下潜到约10984米。2020年,它完成了全球首次在海洋最深处的多次载人下潜。它采集深海样品并进行科学和环境探测。这标志着中国在深海探测技术领域处于世界领先地位。

Ms Gao: Thank you for the wonderful talk, Mr Jones. Now, does anyone have any questions?
Emma: I do! Why are so many countries researching the deep sea?
Mr Jones: Well, curiosity is one reason. We don't know enough about the ocean floor.
Fu Xing: I remember that in 2020, China's Fendouzhe dived deeper into the Mariana Trench than many other submersibles in the world and filmed it. But I didn't see any deep-sea animals. What are they like?
Mr Jones: Well, many deep-sea animals are large and unusual. Some animals are blind, but they can "see" as well as others. Some even create their own light!
Peter: Cool! Are there any other surprising facts about the deep sea?
Mr Jones: Did you know that there's rubbish even at 11,000 metres deep? That shocked many people.
Ms Gao: That's terrible! We should do something about it.
Mr Jones: You're right!
Listen and think
In order to protect our land and ocean, I think the following suggestions will be helpful.
At home, we can … .
At school, we can … .
When I go out, we can … .
Small actions can make a big difference.
My Suggestions to Protect Our Land and Ocean
In order to protect our land and ocean, I think the following suggestions will be helpful.
At home, we can turn off the lights when we leave a room. We can also save water when we brush our teeth.
At school, we can bring our own water bottles. We can also put trash in the bin.
When I go out, we can say no to plastic bags. We can take our trash home.
Small actions can make a big difference. Let's protect our beautiful planet!
"The deepest place on Earth is not the Mariana Trench. It is the connection between your heart and this planet."
地球上最深的地方不是马里亚纳海沟。而是你的心与这颗星球之间的连接。

Read the questions and think of more you would like to ask the deep-sea researcher. Research the answers. Then ask and answer the questions with a partner.
What is the largest shark in the deep sea?
What is the bottom of the deep sea like?
Why is it important to research the deep sea?
The largest shark is the whale shark (鲸鲨) . But in the deep sea, the biggest is the Greenland shark (格陵兰鲨). It can live for 400 years!最大的鲨鱼是鲸鲨。但在深海中,最大的是格陵兰鲨。它可以活400年!
It’s not sandy like a beach. It’s soft mud (泥土) . There are also volcanoes (火山) and mountains under the water.
Because deep-sea animals can teach us about new medicines. Also, the ocean helps control our weather.
