①In ancient (古代) China, when friends and family say goodbye, they often give a willow branch as a gift. Do you know why it means “goodbye”
②One reason is that willow trees are different from other plants. They are strong and we can see them in almost all places, wet or dry, north or south. When you give a willow branch to your friends, it means you give them a wish for a happy new life. Another reason is that “willow” sounds like “Liu” in Chinese. So giving it is like saying “________”, even though you know they have to leave.
③Next, old traditions give willows a special meaning. In the Han Dynasty (朝代), Ba Bridge in Chang’an is such a perfect place to say goodbye. People often stop there and give willow branches. Later, in the Tang and Song Dynasties, more people travel far from home. So it’s easy for people to feel the pain (痛) of leaving. For example, Wang Wei writes in his poem (诗), “The willows by the hotel look so fresh and green.”

Are people less happy or happier when they get older If your answer is “happier”, then you are right, based on a study published five years ago. It found that people generally become happier and experience less worry after age fifty. In fact, it found that by the age of eighty-five, people are happier with their life than they were at eighteen.
The findings came from a survey (调查) of more than three hundred and forty thousand adults in the United States in 2008. At that time, the people were between the ages of eighteen and eighty-five.
Arthur Stone from the Stony Brook University in New York led the study of the relationship (关系) between happiness and age. His team found that levels of stress were the highest among adults between the ages of twenty-two and twenty-five. Stress levels dropped a lot after people reached their fifties.
Levels of happiness were the highest among the kids and those in their early seventies.
The survey also found that men and women have similar feelings as they grow older. However, women at all ages reported more sadness, stress and worry than men did.
So how can people become happier when they get older One reason is that, as people get older, they become more thankful for what they have and have better control of their emotions. They also spend less time thinking about bad experiences.
54.What study did Arthur Stone lead
____________________________________________
55.When do people generally become happier according to the study

Does life sometimes seem to be full of problems How many times do you find yourself saying things like “I really don’t understand this maths problem,” or “I can’t get into the school team” Well, maybe it’s time to introduce yourself to to an amazing word yet (还、仍).
With this word, you can change everything. “I really don’t understand this maths problem yet.”, “I can’t get into the school team yet.” Suddenly, the impossible becomes possible.
I once read about a school. After finding the old Pass/Fail system wasn’t helping students grow, the school tried a new way to mark students’ tests. Now students don’t see a big red F for Fail on their test paper if they don’t pass it. They see a “Not yet”. In this way, students feel that they are on a journey to become a better self. The test is not the end.

But don’t worry if you think that you have a fixed mindset. You can learn to have a growth mindset. Remember that it all starts with questioning the things you believe about yourself. Stop believing that you can’t. Believe that you just can’t yet. Once you start doing this, you’ll find how powerful the small word is.

I spent a lot of time making a large shelf for my cave. I found a big tree and chopped(劈) it down . This took three days. Then, I chopped off the branches. This took another two days. After that, I chopped the wood away from one side, and then from the other side. This took more than one month . Altogether it took forty-two days. In England, two men with a good saw (锯子) could have made six of these shelves from that tree in half a day.
I also spent a lot of time looking after my corn and rice crops. I had to protect them from wild animals and birds, so I made a fence around them. I shot some of the birds and hung them up near the corn. After that, all the other birds stayed away. I used one of the old swords I had taken from the ship to cut down the corn when it was ready. I was very proud of my corn and rice and worked hard to increase my crops. A few years later, I would have enough corn to make bread. I had to find a way to grind(碾碎)the corn into flour, but the rocks on the island were not hard enough. I finally discovered that a very hard piece of wood would do. I used some cloth to separate the meal from the husks(外壳). Not having an oven, I made some square pots with lids and covered them with hot ashes. This baked the dough, and I had bread! I made my cave bigger again to hold the corn and flour so that I could make bread whenever I needed to .
I sometimes wondered how I could get to the land which was visible from the other side of the island. I went to the ship' s boat that was blown onto the beach in the shipwreck. However, I could not get it to the water. It was too heavy. I tried many different ways of doing it, but none of them were successful.
