Once upon a time there was a man who was born in poverty, had grown up in poverty, and in poverty he had
married. He was a turner by trade and made, especially, umbrella handles (伞柄) and rings, but he only lived from
hand to mouth.
In his garden there was a pear-tree, but it did not bear a single pear, and yet the good luck was laid in that pear

One day the button flew off; the man searched for it on the floor, and there got hold of one of the smallest of
the wooden pears. So he bored a hole in it, pulled a string through it, and the little pear fitted very well into the
broken ring. It was definitely the very best fastener (按钮) the umbrella had ever had.
Next year when the man was sending umbrella handles to the town, he also sent some of the little wooden
pears, and begged that they might be tried, and so they came to America. There they very soon noticed that the little

Seagrass meadows (海草床) are wonder plants growing beneath the sea. They feed and shelter sea life and are
good at storing carbon (碳 ). Thanks to the assistance of tiger sharks, a huge seagrass meadow in the Bahamas
Banks was recently discovered, offering the world a tool to fight climate change.
Seagrass has usually been detected by Earth-orbiting satellites that identify darker patches in the blue water. In
this study, tiger sharks were selected as research tools due to their highly consistent associations with seagrass
ecosystems. They spend 70% of their time in seagrass meadows. The team equipped eight tiger sharks with satellite
tags (标签), seven sharks with camera tags, and used a 360-degree camera on a shark for the first time ever.
The data researchers collected was astonishing. The world’s largest seagrass ecosystem, measuring at least
66,900 square kilometers, has been discovered. This reflects a 41% increase from previous estimates of global
seagrass. Seagrass can capture huge quantities of carbon by photosynthesis and stores (储存) it on the seafloor. In
terms of climate change, this is excellent news; seagrass is 35 times faster at removing carbon than tropical
rain-forests. When referred to global seagrass carbon stock estimates, the study indicates that seagrass in the
Bahamas may contain 19.2% to 26.3% of all the carbon stored in seagrass meadows on Earth.
Yet seagrass meadows are rapidly disappearing, with over 92% of meadows in the UK gone, according to the
World Wildlife Fund. Scientists are collecting seeds and trying to grow new seagrass meadows through restoration
projects. This new discovery offers optimism and proves the importance of the ocean for healing.
The sharks led us to the seagrass ecosystem in the Bahamas, which we now know is likely the most significant
blue carbon sink on the planet. What this discovery shows us is that ocean exploration and research are essential for
a healthy future. The untapped potential of the ocean is limitless. These meadows can be protected and can be
replicated, offering hope for climate change around the globe.

Shingles (带状疱疹) is a painful skin condition caused by the chickenpox virus (水痘病毒). After a person
recovers from chickenpox, the virus does not disappear. Instead, it remains inactive in the body for many years,
often for decades. As people age, their immune (免疫的) system naturally weakens, which can allow the virus to
reactivate and cause shingles. Recently, researchers have discovered that the shingles vaccine (疫苗) may offer an
unexpected extra benefit: it may help slow down the aging process.
A large-scale study conducted in Ontario, Canada, involved more than 464,000residents. Over a seven-year
period, scientists found that individuals who received the newer shingles vaccine were roughly one-fifth less likely
to develop dementia (痴呆症 ) than those who did not. A second study of 3,800 adults aged 70 and older also
showed that vaccinated participants had significantly lower levels of inflammation (炎症) and better overall health
ratings. These findings clearly suggest that the vaccine’s effects extend well beyond simply preventing shingles.
Scientists are still unsure exactly how the vaccine produces this protective effect. One idea is that the inactive
virus may quietly cause continuous mild damage over time, and the vaccine may help stop this ongoing harm and
the low-level inflammation it causes could even play a role in the development of the dementia. Another possibility
is that the vaccine enhances the overall immune system — for example, by increasing the production of white
blood cells — which helps the body fight off various diseases. If true, other vaccines might also provide similar
unexpected benefits.
Despite these promising findings, researchers warn that many questions still need answers before public health
officials can recommend the vaccine for younger adults. Key uncertainties include how long the protective effect
lasts, whether it becomes stronger with age, and whether the benefits apply to younger populations. Although the
