M: Hello. International Friends Club. Can I help you
W: Oh, hello. I read about your club in the paper today and I thought I’d phone to find out a bit more.
M: Yes, certainly. Well, we are a sort of social club for people from different countries. It’s quite a new club —
we have about 50 members at the moment, but we are growing all the time.
W: That sounds interesting. I’m British actually, and I came to Washington about three months ago. I’m looking for
ways to meet people. Er, what kinds of events do you organize
M: Well, we have social get- togethers, and sports events, and we also have language evenings.
W: Could you tell me something about the language evenings
M: Yes. Every day except Thursday we have a language evening. People can come and practice their languages —
you know, over a drink or something. We have different languages on different evenings. Monday — Spanish;
Tuesday — Italian; Wednesday — German; and Friday — French. On Thursday we usually have a meal in a
restaurant for anyone who wants to come.
W: Well, that sounds great. I really need to practice my French.
M: OK. Well, if you can just give me your name and address, I’ll send you the form and some more information. If
you join now, you can have the first month free.

W: Vatican Radio recently began its first regular news broadcast in Latin. The broadcast is the latest effort to
expand the use of Latin. The weekly Vatican Radio News Broadcast lasts five minutes. It will be followed by a
30-minute show with Latin conversation. The radio’s news team, as well as the Vatican’s Latin translation
department, will produce the program. Italian businessman Luca Desiata published a new book of crossword
puzzles in Latin and ancient Greek this month. This book is thought to be the first with no help or explanations in
modern languages. Desiata said the Internet has helped renew interest in Latin. He said we should now have about
40 Latin online groups around the world. Many attempts have been made to bring Latin back to popular use. Some
have tried to introduce new words for things that did not exist at the time of the Roman Empire. In the 1990s, for
example, top Vatican Latin researcher Carlo Egger came up with some words for common objects in the home.
Maybe given time, the dead language will come back to life.

Good morning, everyone! I’m Li Hua. Today I’d like to share my experience in our school’s technology
practice activity.
Last month, I joined the “Smart Garden” project. We built an automatic watering system using sensors and
simple programming. It was challenging but exciting to see our ideas come to life. This experience taught me that
technology is not just about theories — it’s about solving real problems. I learned to cooperate with teammates
and think creatively when facing difficulties. Most importantly, I discovered the joy of creating something useful.
I encourage everyone to explore technology. You never know what you might achieve!
Thank you.

参考范文:
A few hours later, surprisingly, I got a call from Tom. “Madam, we have found it!” he exclaimed, his voice
filled with excitement. I couldn’t believe it. My jaw dropped as Ilistened to Tom explain how the team found the
diamond. “It was like finding a needle in a haystack,” said Tom. I rushed back to the airport, my heart pounding
with anticipation. Tom held out a tiny plastic bag, and in the bag was my diamond — perfect and whole. When I
saw the diamond sparkling in the palm of Tom’s hand, I felt a surge of emotion.
Tears welled up in my eyes as I thanked Tom and his team, over and over again. “You have no idea how much
this means to me,” I said, my voice trembling. “I travel a lot, and Igo to a lot of airports. But I’ve never had an
experience like this before. You treat me like an important person, not just a random passenger.” Tom smiled, his
eyes twinkling with kindness. Reflecting on the experience, I realized how lucky I was to have met such dedicated
and kind-hearted people. Their compassion and teamwork had turned a moment of despair into one of joyful
reunion.

My exposure to diverse cultures and global perspectives was limited. However, during my senior year of high
school, I had the opportunity to participate in a cross-cultural exchange program that opened my eyes to the beauty
and importance of global engagement. This experience not only broadened my horizons (视野), but also shaped my
worldview and made me realize the value of learning from different cultures.
My cross-cultural experience began when I was selected to visit a school in Nicaragua. As we arrived in the
capital city, Managua, I was immediately struck by the stark contrast to my own hometown. The busy and noisy
city, the colorful buildings, and the crowded street markets all seemed like scenes from a different world. I realized,
at that time, that this journey would be a transformative experience.
During our time in Nicaragua, we stayed with a local host family who warmly welcomed us into their homes.
This immersion (沉浸 ) into the local culture allowed us to experience firsthand the daily lives of Nicaraguan
people. I still remember the smell of homemade food, the sound of children playing in the streets, and the warmth
and hospitality of our host family. Despite the language barrier, we quickly formed deep connections and
friendships that transcended (超越) words.
One particular experience stands out in my memory. One evening, our host family invited us to a traditional
Nicaraguan celebration. As we arrived at the colorful square, I was amazed by the sights and sounds that
surrounded us. The rhythmic beats of traditional music filled the air, and people were joyously dancing and
celebrating. It was at that moment when I found myself moving to the rhythm and enjoying the local customs that I
realized the power of cultural exchange. I felt a sense of unity and connection with the people around me, despite
our differences. This experience taught me that understanding and respecting different cultures can bring people
closer together and help build a more connected world.
24. How did the exchange program affect the author
A. It shaped his view on his country. B. It made him fall in love with travel.
C. It deepened his understanding of the world. D. It helped him know the importance of learning.
25. What does the underlined word “stark” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Clear. B. Fair. C. Expected. D. Common.
26. What did the author say about the language barrier
A. It created misunderstandings at first. B. It made cultural immersion impossible.
C. It failed to block genuine human bonds. D. It was overcome through formal lessons.
27. What did the author learn from the exchange program
A. Music and dance were universal languages.
B. Celebrations brought people together naturally.
C. Local customs were worth experiencing firsthand.
D. True connection went beyond cultural differences.
C
Newly published research finds that tropical forests can rebound up to twice as fast after deforestation (毁林)
when their soils contain enough nitrogen (氮). The study shows that what happens below ground plays a major role
in how quickly forests return after land has been cleared. Scientists led by the University of Leeds launched the
largest and longest experiment ever designed to examine how nutrients shape forest regrowth.
The researchers selected 76 forest plots across Central America and monitored them for as long as 20 years.
Each site differed in age and size, allowing the team to follow how trees grew and died as forests recovered over
time. To test the role of nutrients, the plots received different treatments. Some were given nitrogen fertiliser, some
were given phosphorus (磷) fertiliser, some received both nutrients, and some were left untreated. This approach
allowed the scientists to directly compare how forests responded under different soil conditions.
The results show that soil nutrients strongly influence how quickly tropical forests regrow. During the first 10
years of recovery, forests with adequate nitrogen rebounded at about twice the rate of those lacking it. Phosphorus
alone did not produce the same effect.
Wen, who carried out the research, said, “Our study is exciting because it suggests there are ways we can
boost the capture and storage of greenhouse gases through reforestation by managing the nutrients available to
trees.”
Although nitrogen fertiliser was used in the experiment, the researchers do not recommend fertilising forests.
Widespread fertiliser use could lead to harmful side effects, including emissions of N2O, a powerful greenhouse gas.
Instead, the team suggests practical alternatives. Forest managers could plant trees from the bean family, which
naturally add nitrogen to the soil. Another option is restoring forests in areas that already have sufficient nitrogen
due to the effects of air pollution.
28. What is the key to forest regrowth
A. The forest size. B. The tropical location.
C. The type of nutrient. D. The land-clearing method.
29. Why did the researchers treat the forest plots differently
A. To find proper trees. B. To make a comparison.
C. To choose the best plot. D. To test the soil nutrients.
30. What made researchers refuse to recommend nitrogen fertiliser
A. Its potential environmental risks. B. Its poor availability in rural areas.
C. Its limited effect on forest growth. D. Its high cost and complex application.
31. What can be the best title for the text
A. Air Pollution Accidentally Helps Forest Recover
B. Scientists Measure Tropical Forest Recovery Time
C. Nitrogen Fertiliser May Do Harm to the Atmosphere
D. Scientists Found the Soil Secret That Doubles Forest Regrowth

Many residents viewed bottled water sold in large refillable containers as the safest choice. However, testing
showed that among the 11 water sources examined, bottled water was the most likely to contain coliform bacteria
(大肠型细菌). “We found there is a clear gap between what people believe about water safety and what is actually
happening in their homes, and that can have major public health implications,” said Dr Brooke Ramay, a researcher
from Washington State University.
Unsafe drinking water continues to be a serious global health issue. More than 4 billion people around the
world lack access to safely managed water, and polluted water contributes to millions of cases of diarrheal illness
each year, especially among children. Polluted water is also increasingly linked to the spread of
antimicrobial-resistant bacteria (耐药菌).
The research team surveyed 60 households, split evenly between urban and rural areas, and collected water
samples from several sources, including bottled, piped, well, spring, and filtered water. The samples were analyzed
for coliform bacteria. Despite being widely trusted, bottled water was six times more likely to test positive for
coliform bacteria than other water sources. Only 17% of bottled water samples met World Health Organization
standards for safe drinking water.
The study also highlighted how cultural beliefs influence everyday behavior. People who trust their water
source are less likely to boil or treat it, and those who rely on bottled water often skip cleaning water dispensers (饮
水机).
“Our results suggest that beliefs about water safety may actually contribute to pollution because people do not
take the same steps with sources they trust as they do with other less trusted ones,” said Ramay. “Understanding
how people view water safety is key to improving public health. When people believe their water is safe, they don’t
take extra measures, but when they see a risk, they change their behavior.”
32. What does Ramay imply in paragraph 1
A. Views on water safety differ from reality. B. Bottled water is probably safe.
C. People know water safety well. D. Home water affects public health.
33. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about
A. Global health issues. B. The effect of polluted water.
C. Water management problems. D. The spread of bacteria in water.
34. What does the study find about bottled water
A. It has poor test results though trusted by people.
B. It is unimproved when dispensers are cleaned.
C. It meets standards more than other sources.
D. It is the safest choice among all sources.
35. What might Ramay agree with about drinking water safely
A. Choosing the water you like best. B. Never believing bottled water is safe.
C. Changing the thought of clean water. D. Understanding water safety correctly.

Success is not always about what you do, but about how you think. The way you face challenges, setbacks,
and opportunities shapes the path you take. 36 It keeps you stuck in cycles of doubt, fear, and hesitation.
Understanding these patterns will help you break free and move forward with clarity and confidence.
37 Your mind has a natural tendency to focus on problems because they are urgent and need attention.
But when you focus too much on what’s wrong, it’s easy to get stuck in a cycle of frustration and helplessness.
Your energy drains (耗尽) as you think about the same issues without making progress.
You are afraid of what people will think if you fail. Being seen as someone who could succeed creates
pressure that is too heavy to carry. The thought of failing in front of others, disappointing them, or losing their
respect is overwhelming. It isn’t just about failure itself —it is about the judgment that might follow. 38
You don’t believe your hard work will pay off. Effort can sometimes feel invisible, especially when results
don’t come as quickly as you hope. The problem is that by doubting that your hard work will make a difference,
you lose motivation and give up before you’ve really had a chance to succeed. 39 Often, the most
meaningful achievements come from steady, patient effort over time.
You think small and avoid dreaming big. Limiting your dreams to what is safe or realistic can quietly shrink
(缩小) your potential. When you think small, you miss out on growing beyond your limits and discovering what
you’ re truly capable of. 40 You’re afraid of failure, disappointment, or even standing out. But settling for
less doesn’t protect you. It keeps you trapped in a life that is smaller than it could be.
A. Often, this belief comes from fear.
B. It’s great to solve problems by yourself.
C. You focus on problems instead of solutions.
D. That fear often stops people from trying new things.
E. You don’t want to lose your interest in learning skills.
F. Sometimes, your own mind becomes the biggest barrier.
G. It’s important to remember that success rarely happens overnight.

Food was also a problem. We found no vegetables or fruit. As one member noted, “The food now is pretty
well all meat of sea creatures.” 59 sea animals, we would starve. As the chef, I tried to vary the meals, but

I had just stepped off the plane after an exhausting business trip in Los Angeles. It was June 13th, and as I
stood at the baggage carousel (传送带), waiting for my luggage, I couldn’t help but feel a wave of relief wash over
me. All I wanted was to go home and see Eric, who’d been waiting to celebrate our 33rd anniversary together. But
as I picked up my suitcase, my heart skipped a beat — the diamond from my engagement ring (订婚戒指) was
missing.
“Oh no,” I whispered to myself, my heart sinking. Panic set in. I truly didn’t think I was ever going to see that
precious diamond again. It wasn’t just a piece of jewelry; it was a symbol of our love and commitment.
Without hesitation, I rushed back to the airline desk, determined to find my diamond. I reported the loss to an
airline staff member, who immediately showed concern and offered support. A maintenance team, led by Tom
Riordan, a dedicated stationary engineer with two decades of experience, quickly acted to help me.
“We’ll do everything we can to find it,” Tom said firmly, his eyes reflecting a genuine commitment to helping
me. His team quickly got to work, moving among the complicated mechanical devices beneath the carousel. I stood
there, feeling helpless but grateful for their firm dedication.
After an hour and a half of searching, Tom turned to me with a sympathetic look. “We haven’t found it yet, but
the next shift will continue the search,” he said. “Don’t worry, we won’t give up.”
I left the airport that day with a heavy heart, but Tom’s assurance kept a small spark of hope alive within me.
