days now! We’re travelling around Africa. The lorry is a bit like a house on wheels (轮子),

Mr. Worth liked spending time with his grandson, Shawn. He enjoyed teaching him some
of the things he may not be taught in school.
One day, Shawn told his grandfather about a class science project that he was very
excited about.
Each student was going to grow a pot of bean plants. When the plants grew big and
strong, they could be transplanted into the school garden. All the students wanted to grow the
strongest and best bean plant.
Shawn showed his grandfather the bean seeds. He explained that his teacher had taught
them how to make the seeds grow. First, they put the seeds on a wet paper towel. Then, they
put them in a warm place. When the seeds sprout (发芽), they are ready to be transplanted
into a pot.
After listening to his grandson, Mr. Worth said, “I want to show you one more thing
about growing plants.”
“When I was a boy, my father showed me how to grow strong plants,” he continued.
“When the plant is starting out, you put some weight on it.” Shawn looked at his grandfather
in surprise.
“Doesn’t the weight prevent the bean from growing ” he asked.
“No, of course not. This way, the bean plant will be strong and healthy. If you give it
everything it wants, it will grow too fast and be weak. It will fall over when a big wind blows.”
Shawn listened carefully. He wanted to grow the bean in the way his grandfather suggested.
He could hardly wait to tell his friends what he had learnt that day.

plants

Yu Wenying, a household name in her community in Central China’s
Hubei province, is easily recognizable (可辨认的) by the jingling keys at her
waist, with each one belonging to an elderly person she cares for. To the
elderly in the Jianshelu community in Huangshi city, Yu is more than a
neighbor. Instead, they view her as a family member.
Yu’s journey began when she started assisting her neighbor, Zhang
Meiyu, an elderly woman who suffered multiple strokes. As Zhang’s health
declined, her son struggled to care for her alone. In 2006, Yu then volunteered to assist with
bathing, medication, laundry, cooking and house cleaning.
Soon, more elderly residents wanted her to help them. Pan Suhui, a senior who had lost a
child and suffered injuries from a fall, became the second person Yu cared for. With her own
family unable to provide consistent (持续的) support, Pan depended on Yu for three months
until she recovered.
As Yu’s responsibilities grew, so did the number of keys she carried ---- up to over 40,
each symbolizing trust and responsibility.
“I used to worry about locking myself out. But once I gave my key to Yu, I felt much

still visits me often, and I feel very supported.”
For Yu, these keys signify the trust placed in her. “Handing me the keys means placing
absolute trust in me, and that drives me to work even harder.”
In return, the elderly express their thanks in small but meaningful ways, such as sharing
homemade meals in daily life or reminding her to dress warmly when the weather turns cold.
Over the years, Yu has cared for nearly 100 elderly individuals. Inspired by Yu’s
kindness, others in the community have chosen to follow her example.
