过去进行时表示在过去某一时刻或某一段时间正在进行的动作。结构为was/ were +v.-ing。

when/while引导的时间状语从句
I was cooking dinner at 8:00 last night.
He was cleaning his room at that time.
We were hanging out on the street from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
He was waiting for the bus when the rainstorm came.
肯定句 eg: The girl was shopping when I saw her.
否定句 eg: He was not working at that time.
一般疑问句 eg: —Were you playing basketball then
—Yes, I was. / No, I wasn’t.
肯定回答：Yes，主语+ was / were.
否定回答：No，主语+ wasn’s / weren’t.
特殊疑问句 eg: What were you doing at nine last Sunday morning
主语单数选was，复数选were, you永远都选were

when引导的时间状语从句通常与瞬间性动词或延续性不强的动词连用。瞬间性动词指动作极为短暂,瞬间结束。如:start, begin, hit, jump, knock等。
小结：when引导的时间状语从句与瞬间性动词连用时,用一般过去时,主句用过去进行时。
I was waiting for the bus when it began to rain heavily.

小结：when引导的时间状语从句与延续性不强的延续性动词连用时,用过去进行时,主句用一般过去式。延续性动词指动作可以延续一段时间,而不是瞬间结束。如:work, study, drink, eat等。

while引导的时间状语从句强调主句动作在从句动作进行的过程中发生，
从句的谓语动词必须为延续性动词，常用进行时。
1. 从句用过去进行时，主句用一般过去时。
While I was watching TV, Tom came in.
2. 主句和从句都用进行时。强调主、从句动作同时进行。
While I was watching TV, she was doing some cleaning.
小结：强调主句动作发生时，从句动作正在进行，常用while引导从句。主句常用一般过去时，从句常用过去进行时。
主句动作是延续性的，用 __________ 时态；
从句动作是短暂性的，用___________时态，用______ 引导。
