When her grandmother's health began to worsen last autumn, Mary would make the drive from
第2页/共10页
Washington. DC to Winchester, VA every few days.
She hated highway driving, finding it ugly and boring. She preferred to take winding country roads
to her grandmother's hospital. When she drove through the rocky town of Harpers Ferry, the beauty of
the rough waters was always appealing to her.
Toward the end of her journey, Mary had to get on highway 81. It was here that she discovered a
surprising bit of beauty during one of her trips. Along the shoulder of the highway, there was a long
stretch of wild flowers. They were thin and delicate and purple, and moved back and forth in the wind
as if whispering poems to each other.
The first time she saw the flowers, Mary was seized by an uncontrollable urge to pull over on the
highway and pull a bunch from the soil. She carried them into her grandmother's room when she arrived
at the hospital and placed them in a vase by her bed.
For a moment her grandmother seemed more lucid (清醒的) than usual. She thanked Mary for the
flowers, commented on their beauty and asked where she had gotten them. Mary was overjoyed by the
ability of the flowers to wake something up inside her sick grandmother.
Afterwards, Mary began carrying scissors in the car during her trips to visit her grandmother. She
would quickly glide onto the shoulder, jump out of the car, and clip a bunch of flowers. Each time
Mary placed the flowers in the vase, her grandmother's eyes would light up and they would have a
splendid conversation.
One morning in late October, Mary got a call that her grandmother had taken a turn for the worse.
Mary was in such a hurry to get to her grandmother that she sped past her flower spot. She decided to
turn around, head several miles back, and cut a bunch.
Mary arrived at the hospital to find her grandmother very weak and unresponsive. She placed the
flowers in the vase and sat down to hold her grandmother's hand. She felt a squeeze on her fingers. It
was the last conversation they had.
21. Mary preferred to take country roads to the hospital because she could ____.
A. get on highway 81 more easily

B. Love has no beginning or ending.
C. Life is as beautiful as summer flowers.
D. Flowers have the magic to cure diseases.

A fascinating question in human evolution is, when did we first begin to think critically In other
words, when did we turn from animals focused only on the daily struggle to avoid starvation to humans
who could think symbolically about the world around us However, answering this question is not
easy as thinking leaves no fossils to discover.
A commonsense assumption is that higher levels of thought go hand-in-hand with verbal language,
because higher thinking, such as creative thought, would naturally seek a means of expression. So
tracing the development of language could give an approximate idea of when humans began to think
critically.
Interestingly, we do have some fossil evidence related to speech. Animals whose larynx (voice
box) is placed high in their throats are unable to produce the variety of sounds necessary for speech.
Fossil bones tell us that in early humans, the larynx was originally high in the throat. However, by
about 200,000 years ago, it had moved lower in the throat. This lowering provided a larger sound
chamber (the space in the throat and the mouth) in which passing air could be controlled by the tongue,
making a wide range of sounds and rhythms possible-So humans were physically able to speak around
200,000 years ago, but when did they actually start doing so Estimates range from 35,000 to 100,000
years ago. But with no physical evidence of ancient language use, we need another approach to
determine more precisely when humans began to speak— and to think critically.
Professor Richard Klein of Stanford University suggests that art may be the key. After all, ability
to create or appreciate art is a uniquely human trait. If ancient humans had the imagination to create a
work of art (which in itself is a means of communication), then it seems highly likely that they would
possess the primary means of communication: language. This suggests that the first works of art can
be considered indicators of when language and critical thought began.
Until recently the earliest art was believed to be cave paintings, carved figures, and jewelry found
in southwestern Europe and thought to date from about 40,000 years ago. This suggested that humans
first became capable of critical thought about 40,000 years ago. However, this time frame was recently
overturned by an exciting discovery in South Africa. Anthropologist Christ Henshilwood spent more
than ten years exploring a cave there. He found many well-made tools, but more intriguing were the
8,000 pieces of ochre, a soft stone that can be turned into paint. Hensilwood's breakthrough came in
1999 when he found an ochre piece with lines cut in a careful pattern. In other words, it was deliberate
artistic design. Henshilwood had found the oldest piece of art yet, its date of origin set at 70,000
第4页/共10页
years— nearly 30,000 years before the art in Europe.
Based on Henshilwood's discovery, it seems that humans began to speak and think critically at
least 70,000 years ago.
24.____ made humans physically able to speak.
A. The higher thinking
B. The lowering of the larynx
C. The evolution of the tongue
D. The appearance of various sounds
25. What can be inferred from the passage
A. Humans haven't found fossils of leaves.
B No other animals than humans can enjoy art.
C. Without creative thought, humans would be unable to speak.
D. Evidence of ancient language use was once found in Europe.
26. According to the passage, the oldest deliberate artistic design dates back to ____ years ago.
A.30,000 B.40,000 C.70,000 D.200,000
27. Which of the following issue does the author mainly intend to deal with
A. When humans began to think.
B. When humans became able to create art.
C. How humans communicated more freely.
D. How humans stopped struggling for starvation.
C
Are we worthy of special attention from advanced species in the Milky Way We may be a
phenomenon as uninteresting to them as ants are to us; after all, when we' re walking down the sidewalk
we rarely, if ever, examine every ant along our path.
Our sun formed at the tail end of the star formation history of the universe. Most stars are billions
of years older than ours. Half of all sun like stars host an Earth-size planet in their habitable zone,
allowing for liquid water and for the chemistry of life. Since the dice of life were rolled in billions of
other locations within the Milky Way under similar conditions to those on Earth, life, as we know it,
is likely common. A question may arise: Where is everybody then That's Fermi's paradox (悖论).
The silence between our neighbors and us may mean that we are not the most attention-worthy
cookies in the jar.
As a first approximation(类似事物) to what humans look like, it is reasonable to glance at the
mirror, for each of us shares a common genetic ancestry with all people. But this might not be the case
for life that developed independently on other planets. For example, vegetation on the nearest habitable
exoplanet, Proxima Centauri b. could be shockingly different from those on Earth. vegetation on the
第5页/共10页
planet's surface would adapt to harvesting infrared light, showing a “red edge” at a longer wavelength
than plants on Earth. As a result, the grass in our neighbor's yard may be dark red and not green like
ours.
It is even more difficult to forecast what technologies that are billions of years old would look like.
In searching for them, we must not ignore unexpected signals seen through the telescopes. If our
instruments are not sensitive enough or our search techniques are inadequate, we will not discover
techno signatures. Processing data without suitable machine-learning algorithms may resemble casting
an ineffective fishing net that never catches fish because its holes are too big.
As we imagine new technologies, we may ultimately find the one that would allow us to detect
many other species who use it. However, we should take caution with anecdotal observations that are
not up to the standards of scientific evidence. This includes conspiracy theories without supporting
evidence, which appear once in a while, or reports about UFOs, which do not stand up to the scrutiny
of reproducibility. Since our recording devices have improved considerably over time, one would
expect that a fuzzy photo taken by an old camera from 50 years ago would turn into a clear image in
today's advanced cameras, thus providing conclusive evidence beyond any reasonable doubt. To
achieve scientific credibility, any finding of an unusual object must be followed by studying it or other
objects of its type through well-documented scientific procedures. Scientific evidence restricts our
imagination and saves us from far-fetched ideas.
Fermi's paradox assumes we humans have some sort of cosmic significance. The reality may be
that we are ordinary and doomed to disappear, just like the dinosaurs. Why would our galactic
neighbors care about how green our grass is Given that dwarf stars like Proxima Centauri are much
more abundant than the sun, most habitable planets might be covered with dark red grass, which would
be as soothing to the infrared eyes of most exo-vacationers as green grass is to us. As a result,
interstellar tourist agencies may find Proxima b to be a more attractive destination than Earth. We could
wonder, as Enrico Fermi did, why no exo-tourists have shown up to admire us. But better yet, we could
get in touch with Proxima b and invite the locals to visit and share a water-based drink with us.
28. According to Paragraph 1 and 2, ____.
A. liquid water is an essential resource for life to start
B. lives from other planets are planning to prey on earth
C. the solar system formed right after the universe began
D. ants by the street are easily noticed by people passing by
29. The underlined word “fish” in paragraph 4 is used to refer to ____.
A. infrared light
B. Search techniques
C. UFOs passing the earth
第6页/共10页
D. messages from outer space
30. The reported cases in which people claim to witness aliens
A. restrict imagination.
B. take place very often.
C. are yet to be verified.
D. are thoroughly studied.
31. What might be the best title for the passage
A What are lives on other planets like
B. Where do aliens live in the universe
C. When will humans be able to travel in space
D. Why would we believe our neighbors want to visit us
第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,共 10 分)
根据短文内容,从七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
You're faced with a lot of decisions in everyday work. There are multiple tasks calling for your
focus, and you are burning daylight or even burn out trying to decide what comes first. __32__
If you' re going to think smarter about how you prioritize (排序) tasks, you have to invest a little
time away from your to-do list. Here's the thing: what you work on confirms your values. You may
think it's no big thing to work overtime for a little while, but something will be sacrificed with this
decision. If you' re a parent, you might spend less time with your kids. Similarly, if you choose not to
work much or effectively, you' re deciding that your values lie outside your career.__33__
Write all the tasks down and create four boxes containing all of things you care about. This could
be: helps the community, helps one-to-one relationships, makes money, and things you find personally
fulfilling. Then place them in the boxes and see how many of the boxes each one takes up. Anything
that fills just one box has to be reconsidered. Anything that fills nothing should not be considered at
all. __34__From here, the rest of the prioritization gets a little easier. You now have a better idea where
the efforts are really paying off. You also know when you are wasting your own time.
In order to figure out a plan for yourself, the first thing you should be doing is gathering all of
your tasks, large and small.__35__Other people are counting on you or your future self will depend on
them somehow. These are actually easier to prioritize. Then break down large tasks into smaller pieces.
That helps put things in order. Part of the reason we do the small things first is that being productive
feels good. Acknowledging accomplishments makes you more likely to keep going and pushes you
through the more complicated tasks.
__36__ Notice when your energy levels are high and when they are weak. Be aware when you' re
more productive for social activities and when you're better off. The more you study yourself, the easier
第7页/共10页
planning becomes.
Now that you have your priorities in order, go ahead and you will boost your productivity.
A. You can also prioritize based on energy levels.
B. The good news is that some tasks can keep you motivated.
C. So how can you figure out what's most important to work on first
D. This activity allows you to see where you really want to invest your energy.
E. If you want to make a new list, you need to turn to your colleagues for help.
F. There are some tasks that are pretty straightforward and you need to do the thing.
G. Where you invest your time is not just about what you value but also what you don't value.

The last thing I wanted to hear when my government-sponsored scholarship was withdrawn during
my final year of college was. “Things are working out for your own good. Just give them some time,
those words just stirred-a lot of anger in me.
Then I read the story of the Chinese bamboo farmer, which gave me a different view on life. The
seed of the Chinese bamboo is planted in the ground like every seed. It is watered, and fed with
nutrients daily, but it shows no immediate physical response and doesn't appear to grow. The farmer
continues to water and feed the seed in year one, year two, and year three. No growth is seen until the
fourth year, when the seed finally breaks through the ground. Then, in the space of just five weeks, it
grows ninety feet tall. The Chinese bamboo grows to its full capacity within 5 years.
第8页/共10页
Despite not seeing an immediate result, the farmer had trust in what he was doing. He continued
to water and feed the plant for four years, because he believed that if he played his own role and did
all that a farmer was supposed to do, then he would be given his reward at the right time. That trust
and patience is what kept the farmer persistently feeding his seed for four years before enjoying the
reward in the end.
Life is not always straightforward. Most often, it's not a matter of 5+5=10(Sum 1).
Life can be more like 2+1+2+0+0+0+1+2+0+0+1+1=10 (Sum 2).
Both sums lead to the same result, but through quite different paths and processes. To be mature
is to accept that things might look rough right now but the story can still have a great ending.
We might live in a microwave generation where everything seems to happen instantly; but many
things still obey the laws of nature. Just doing what you are supposed to be doing, having patience like
the Chinese bamboo farmer, and trusting that things will work out for you can help you get through
the toughest times.
48. What happened to the author in the final year of college
49. How does the Chinese bamboo grow in the fourth year
50. Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why. To
overcome difficulties, we need to trust that things will work out and simply wait patiently for the great
ending to come.
51. Which is your life more like. Sum I or Sum 2 Explain why.(about 40 words)
第二节 (15 分)
