Some time ago, I was chatting with a Chinese friend about the famous places of interest in New York. When he asked me to compare two art museums, I said, “Ah, they’re just like chalk and cheese.” My answer left my friend confused. The expression was clearly over his head. At that moment, I realized it’s easy to puzzle people from non-English-speaking countries with our idioms (习语). But learning idioms can be fun!
Let’s start with "like chalk and cheese". It means two things are completely different. Just think about it. Cheese is soft and smooth, while chalk is dry, hard and dusty. What a big difference!
