Riding a Roller Coaster
Some people love to ride roller coasters. They love to get thrown from side to side, shaken and jerked around. They love fast roller coasters that climb up high and then suddenly drop. Their stomach tingles and their heart feels like it is going to jump right out of their chest. They scream, but they love the ride. And when it is over, they want to ride again. Some people just love a taste of terror.
The First Roller Coaster
The first roller coasters were made in Russia in the icy mountains. People carved toboggans out of the ice. They sat on blankets on the cold seats and slid down the mountain. There was dirt at the bottom so the toboggan would slow down and stop. The only problem was, if they wanted to ride again, the riders had to climb back up the mountain.
More Roller Coaster Ideas
After the ice toboggans came wooden sleds. These were made out of hollowed out tree trunks. These had runners and so they went faster. Later on in the United States, small carts were made to carry coal on the railway lines. They were gravity-powered carts. They had hand brakes to make them stop. These carts started an idea. People could ride in carts through the countryside. Now there are roller coasters all over the world.
Tall,Fast, Scary
Roller coasters are getting bigger and scarier all the time. People want to be the first to make the fastest, the tallest or the scariest ones. They want to break the record for the roller coaster with the most drops and loops. One of the tallest and fastest rides is the Kingda Ka. It cost millions of dollars to make. People are strapped in to trains and they must hold on tight. The whole ride, however, is over in just twenty-eight seconds.
Chasing Roller Coasters
Some people, like Colin McWilliam, travel all over the world to ride roller coasters. Colin has ridden more than five hundred different rides. He says that when you ride a roller coaster, you should look down. That way, you can feel the most speed. Colin was one of the first people to ride a roller coaster called Thirteen. This ride is so terrifying that people can't ride it if they are too young or too old!
A Taste of Terror
The roller coaster called Thirteen spins through a pitch- black forest. All of a sudden, the ground between the tracks crumbles and gives way.Nicola Pickford has ridden Thirteen. “We drop like screaming stones," she said.“We fell from the top. I screamed." Nicola thinks that screaming helps. When the ride is over, people climb out. Their legs are wobbly but they feel good. This is a taste of terror.
