Passage 1
I’m a TV show host. One Sunday, I took my 7-year-old daughter by the sea for lunch. On arriving at the beach, I saw JoJo, a wealthy man in the hotel business. We sat down to chat in an open air cafe.
Suddenly our conversation was interrupted by a stranger, who politely asked permission to speak to me. Often people want to tell me something about my conversation TV show, when I’m out on the streets.
He asked to speak to me privately, so we stood a bit away from my table. He said. “I’m
James, 35 years old, father of a 7-year-old girl, who’s very sick. She needs treatment abroad. The doctors said that if she was treated in the UK, she would probably survive. But I’m poor, so can you please help me ”
Speechless, I stared in the man’s eyes full of tears and asked how I could help. After we talked for a while, I went to sit back at the table. JoJo asked me, “What’s wrong with you Your face changed.” I told him. JoJo was sorry for this family and said I had the means through the
media to help him. Later we headed off to our destinations.
All weekend I thought about James, his daughter and his family. I even thought about doing a special TV show to raise money for this sick child.
On Monday morning I was at the office after I finished presenting my show, when my
secretary said a man needed to speak to me. It was JoJo. He walked into my office. JoJo is so busy with his hotel business that I never imagined he had time to come and see me at the studios.
“Please, call the man with the sick child and tell him that I’ll pay all expenses for his sick daughter’s treatment,” JoJo said, with a cheque in his hand. “I’ve been married for 35 years. I
wasn’t lucky enough to have a child. I want to help this child now.” I picked up the phone to call

At the age of 17 years 64 days, Mack Rutherford has become the youngest person to fly around the world alone! Mack’s journey around the world lasted five months and he flew across
52 countries in total. His record-breaking flight began in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, on 23
March, 2022. He was 16 years old when he took off and celebrated his 17th birthday by himself in his plane.
Mack faced many challenges during his adventure. Because of his small-sized aircraft, he
had to land whenever the weather got too rough. However, at some points he literally couldn’t
land, such as when flying non-stop for 10 hours over an ocean. At other points, he faced extremely hot weather, such as in Dubai. In Sudan, a country in Africa, Mack also faced sandstorms which
made it hard for him to see where he was going. Mack battled strong winds and pouring rain during his flight, but he never stopped smiling, joking and updating his flowers on his social media account along the way, and managed to expertly pilot his plane to safety.
And if Mack’s surname “Rutherford” sounds familiar, it’s because his elder sister Zara also flew around the world earlier this year, and still holds the female version of the record! The
Rutherford siblings (兄弟姐妹) were inspired by their parents to become pilots. “I have known for certain I wanted to fly since I was eleven,” Mack said, “My dad Sam is a professional ferry pilot, my mum Beatrice is a recreational (娱乐的) private pilot.”
Mack hopes to inspire young people to begin working towards their own goals, “No matter what background you have, I believe it is never too early to work towards your dreams and you
shouldn’t limit yourself by others’ expectations.” With both feet firmly back on the ground now, it’s time for Mack to turn his attention towards catching up on his schoolwork!

Passage 1
In many businesses, computers have largely replaced paperwork, because they are fast,
flexible, and do not make mistakes. As one banker said, “Unlike humans, computers never have a bad day.” And they are honest. Many banks advertise that their trades are “untouched by human hands” and therefore safe from human temptation (诱惑) . Obviously, computers have no reason to steal money. But they also have no conscience, and the growing number of computer crimes
shows they can be used to steal.
Computer criminals don’t use guns. And even if they are caught, it is hard to punish them because there are no witnesses and often no evidence. A computer cannot remember who used it; it simply does what it is told. The head teller at a New York City bank used a computer to steal
more than one and a half billion dollars in just four years. No one noticed this theft because he moved the money from one account to another. Each time a customer he had robbed questioned the balance in his account, the teller claimed a computer error, then replaced the missing money
from someone else’s account. This man was caught only because he was a gambler (赌徒) . When the police broke up an illegal gambling operation, his name was in the records.
Some employees use the computers’ power to get revenge (报仇) on employers they
consider unfair. Recently, a large insurance company fired its computer tape librarian for reasons that involved her personal rather than her professional life. She was given thirty days’ notice. In those thirty days, she erased (清除) all the company’s computerized records.
Most computer criminals have been minor employees. Now police wonder if this is “the tip of the iceberg”. As one official says, “I have the feeling that there is more crime out there than we are catching. What we are seeing now is all so poorly done. I wonder what the real experts are
doing — the ones who know how a computer works.”
11 .Which feature of computers makes computer theft possible

A .after the police examined the illegal gambling operation documents
B .when the police broke up the illegal gambling operation
C .after he was questioned on the unusual balance of an account
D .when he was caught transmitting money from one account to another
14 .Why did the computer tape librarian erase all the company’s computerized records
A .She might think it was right to revenge any injustice in professional life.
B .She might think the employer was wrong to fire her for personal problems.
C .The company carelessly gave her enough time to do the erasing.
D .The company always interfered with its employees’ personal life.

Passage 2
When I started university, people told me, “These will be the best days of your life.” Not only would these be the best days of my life, everyone said, but they would also be the most
exciting. By the end of my first year I was seriously considering dropping out. I had not made as many friends, had as much fun, or enjoyed my course as much as I thought I was going to. But I didn’t tell anyone.
I certainly didn’t put it on Facebook — its culture of competitive sharing made me feel
even worse. Visiting my friends’ Facebook, I found that they were clearly enjoying themselves a lot.
Jemma Lamble and I are friends on Facebook — what impression did she get from my
Facebook page “There is one feeling I got when I clicked on Libby’s Facebook page and that is jealousy.”
Talking to fellow students has made me realize how little resemblance our Facebook lives have to our real ones. “University life wasn’t the walk in the park I had expected,” says Jemma. “I certainly didn’t expect the feeling of loneliness that I experienced because I found it hard to
connect with the people on my course.”
Sophie Smith remembers her first day: “As I walked into my first class, I tried my hardest to smile at everyone and make friends. But I was shocked by how blank some people were. I said to one guy, ‘Wow, LCF, I still can’t believe I’m here’. He replied, ‘Well, LCF is lucky to have
me. ’ I don’t want to label everyone on the course because there are some lovely people too.”
My time at university may not have been the dream that I signed up for, but it has made me who I am. LCF did not provide me with the social experience I dreamed of, but it has made me
appreciate the good friends I have kept from my childhood and each new one I have made here.

Two years had passed and I was staring down a report card that highlighted (使 突出) FAIL in more than half the subjects. I didn’t care, at least not till my dad found out about it. You see, I studied in India and unlike the United States where the students are expected to finance their own education, my dad financed me.

Signs posted up and down the school hallway didn’t let me forget: Snowball Dance — Next Friday Night! No one would be asking me, the junior high school outsider. My face was ruined,
and my balance was off — I had seizures (癫痫) without warning. All these were making my middle school life miserable. I kept my head down as I hurried to the classroom.
I stepped into the office where my teacher Mrs Barrett waited. She learned that my
grandmother had been teaching me to sew for years, but none of the other kids in the class knew it.
Mrs Barrett called me up to her desk. “A lot of girls need help with changes on their dresses for the Snowball Dance. I thought you could help me after school,” she said. “Sure,” I said.
Together with Mrs Barrett, I sewed buttons, shortened some sleeves, and lengthened others.
Teresa, one of the most popular girls, came by to pick up her dress. “Roberta designed and sewed it by hand,” Mrs Barrett told her. “It’s fashionable! Thanks. You must have added this
brilliant belt,” she said. “I tied ribbons to the end of a pearl necklace,” I said, looking down at my shabby shoes. Teresa didn’t get crowned at the dance, but her Snowball Dance dress was the talk of the school during the following week. Word quickly spread that I was actually good at
something . Soon the girls were coming to me and Mrs Barrett for custom-made dresses. “We should organize a fashion show,” Mrs Barrett said one day. We asked the girls in the office and

Passage 1
Edmund Percival Hillary was one of the greatest explorers ofthe twentieth century. He was born in Auckland, New Zealand, in 1919. He discovered an interest in mountain climbing while he was still in high school and began climbing New Zealand’s Southern Alps.
Like his father, Hillary earned his living as a beekeeper. However, he continued to climb
mountains. His goal was to climb Mt. Everest, which is the highest mountain in the world. By the early 1950s, several expeditions (远征) had attempted to reach the summit of Everest, but all had failed. Then, in 1953, Hillary and a Nepalese (尼泊尔的) climber named Tenzing Norgay became the first two people to reach the top of the world.
Hillary’s spirit of exploration was not satisfied. He joined an expedition to Antarctica and
reached the South Pole in 1958. He also made an expedition up the Ganges River to its source in the Himalayas. Sir Edmund Hillary was a brave adventurer. He went where no man or woman had gone before.
Although Hillary was best known as the young man who climbed to the summit of Mt.
Everest in the 1950s, he continued his journeys to far-off places into his senior years. For instance, in his mid-sixties Hillary flew to the North Pole with Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon. Moreover, Hillary authored many books. However, his most lasting gift, perhaps, was the Sir
Edmund Hillary Himalayan Trust (信托基金). It raised millions of dollars and contributed to
schools, hospitals and many other public improvements in the Sherpa villages of Nepal. In January 2008, Sir Edmund Hillary died at the age of 88.

Passage 2
Many believe that repairing automobiles is a man’s job, but the story of Gu Huijing is a living proof that women can do it too.
Gu, 18, now studies at Shenzhen No.2 Vocational (职业的) and Technical School. In April,
she won first prize at a provincial competition for vehicle maintenance in Guangdong, which drew 33 teams from different cities across the province.
Gu decided to major in automobiles in a vocational school when she was in junior high. “I
clearly know my strength and weakness,” she said. Gu thought that she would not perform well in her College Entrance Exam due to poor performance in math if she insisted on studying in a senior
high school. But Gu is insightful: She knows that she is much more interested in robots and driverless cars.
At first, her parents were surprised and couldn’t accept her decision. But Gu persuaded them in a rational way: Before making the decision, she researched the future development of the auto
industry in her city, compared different schools' curriculums and sought advice from seniors.
“I showed my parents that I’m really passionate about the major and take my career prospect
seriously,” Gu said. “Then they respected my decision.” Gu did what she said she would. She
started learning about cars in 2019. But she encountered many difficulties in reading the circuit
diagrams (电路图). “Each model of car has its own circuit diagrams,” she said. “It’s hard to figure out all of those diagrams in a short time.” To overcome the difficulty, Gu had been practicing and turning to teachers whenever she had a problem. Finally, Gu achieved her “eureka (顿悟)”
moment after she studied hard for one year.
She showed her perseverance in her one-month intensive training for the competition. From 8 am to 5 pm, Gu had her usual lessons, but at night, she attended a training camp.
Compared to her male classmates, Gu is not strong enough to carry some heavier car parts, but constant training makes up for it. On top of that, Gu is more patient and careful than other male
competitors, Li Shichuan, Gu’s teacher, told The Paper.
“Many people are prejudiced against students from vocational schools and think vehicle
maintenance is a job for men. That’s a stereotype( 刻板印象 ). I don’t think we’re inferior( 低人一等的 ) to others and nor does gender have something to do with the choice of occupation.”
Gu hopes to be a versatile( 全能型的 ) talent in the auto industry. “If possible, I also want to take part in the World Skills Competition and demonstrate Chinese craftsmanship to more
people,” she added.
36 .Why did Gu Huijing decide to study automobiles at a vocational school

Passage 3
During my graduate studies, countless workshops taught me one thing: To make it in
science, one must design and carry out big projects. As I established my own research lab, a senior colleague encouraged me to try something big. So when I landed an associate professor position, my goal seemed obvious: I should perform big projects. This was the only way to lay a foundation for a successful academic research career. The path, however, would not be as clear as I had
pictured.
When I contacted famous researchers to suggest cooperating, as is typically required for
high-profile (高姿态的) projects they frequently replied enthusiastically to start with, agreeing my project sounded interesting and promising. But when they learned I hadjust established my lab,
they became skeptical (持怀疑态度的) and hesitant, ultimately saying no. And when I sought
grant funding, my lack of experience and reputation was cited as a reason to refuse support for my ambitious proposals.
I spent about two years being trapped in this mindset (思维模式), excited about my big ideas but making little actual progress, leading to frustration and depression. As I neared my breaking point, I began to ask myself: Were big projects really the only route
When I shifted to small projects, I became brave enough to step into fields I was not
familiar with. By reading papers in new areas, I found creative ideas to pursue (追求). When I discussed these adventurous, low-cost projects with early-career researchers, they were glad to cooperate. We secured funding. When I published papers out of these projects, they were not
exciting enough to make headlines — but for me, it was a moment of joy and self-contentment.
It has now been 3 years since I embraced this “small” approach. Sometimes senior
colleagues say I’m wasting time with projects that aren’t important enough. But I disagree. When I do these studies, I also find clues for future big projects. Going forward, I will still commit part
of my time to exploring small projects, which I think can help pursue more fundamental questions.
41 .What is the author trying to do with big projects
A .Pursue his graduate studies. B .Seek a route to academic success.
C .Apply for an associate professorship. D .Establish an academic research center.
42 .What prevented the author pursuing his big project

A .His big projects all failed.
B .His big ideas were not practical.
C .He suffered from mental and physical problems.
D .He was confident about his idea, but it didn’t go far enough.
44 .How did the author carry out his small project
A .By publishing influential papers.
B .By getting young colleagues’ funding.
C .By exploring and coming up with new ideas.

Passage 1
An unpleasant smell floated into my nose as the bowl of fried stinky tofu (臭豆腐) settled onto my grandmother’s dinner table. I immediately sat back. The smell ruined my appetite, and I pushed the dish away.
“It’s supposed to stink. Just give it a try!” my grandmother said.
Holding my breath, I unwillingly took a bite. To my surprise, the tofu beneath the fried skin was warm, soft, and mouthwatering. Since then, whenever I visited my grandmother’s house, I
would rush to the kitchen for the stinky tofu with excitement. Thus, stinky tofu became more than a household tradition. It became my favorite dish.
Along with the stinky tofu, I would meet my Uncle Chan on every visit. As an immature boy, I never understood my uncle’s condition of Down syndrome He was an
unfriendly and terrible creature in my eyes. He constantly walked around the house, talking to himself. Whenever he was within view, I would runaway in fear.
However, one day, my view of my uncle suddenly changed. I was just getting out of my
bed when I heard soft steps approaching. It was my uncle. My muscles froze. He slowly sat next
to me and touched my face gently, as a mother would stroke (抚摸) a baby. A wide smile emerged from his blank expression. How beautiful his smile was! I could not help but smile back. My fear disappeared gradually and my muscles relaxed. For the first time, I could see softness and warmth in his eyes.
My uncle very much resembles stinky tofu. Stinky tofu smells unpleasant on the outside,
yet feels warm and soft on the inside. Like stinky tofu, my uncle’s Down syndrome made me keep my distance at first. Yet, I learned that deep inside, he is harmless and has a loving nature.
Some people tend to look down upon disabled people and regard them as unfit for a regular

life. As I was unable to see through the outer surface of the tofu, these people are unable to see through the surface of prejudice. As a result, they judge the disabled with one glance.
The outside and inside of the stinky tofu exist as two extremely different worlds. Perhaps
that is what makes it such a tasty dish. Not only is it delicious, stinky tofu offers a valuable lesson:
never judge people at first glance, for true beauty comes from the inside.
46 .What was the author’s initial reaction to the smell of the stinky tofu
A .He was so excited as to try it at once.

Passage 2
My father was always a good gardener. One of my earliest memories is standing without shoes in the freshly tilled (翻耕的) soil, my hands blackened from digging in the ground.
As a child, I loved following Dad around in the garden. I remember Dad pushing the tiller ahead in perfectly straight lines. Dad loved growing all sorts of things: yellow and green onions, watermelons almost as big as me, rows of yellow corn, and our favorite-red tomatoes.
As I grew into a teenager, I didn’t get so excited about gardening with Dad. Instead of the
magical land of possibility, it had turned into some kind of prison. However, as Dad grew older,
his love for gardening never disappeared. After all the kids were grown and had started families of their own, Dad turned to gardening like never before. Even when he had cancer, he still took care of his garden.
But then, the cancer, bit by bit, invaded his body. I had to do the things he used to do. What really convinced me that Dad was dying was the state of his garden that year. The rows and rows of colorful vegetables were gone. Too tired to weed (除草) them, he simply let them be. He only planted tomatoes.
A few years later, I couldn’t even bear to look at anyone’s garden without having strong
memories pour over me like cold water from a bucket. Last year, I decided to plant my own
garden and started out with just a few tomatoes. That morning, after breaking up an amount of
soil, something caught the corner of my eye and I had to smile. It was my eight-year-old son Jerry, happily playing in the freshly tilled soil.
51 .What did the author like doing as a child in the garden

Passage 1
We thought we had it all — a beautiful house, three healthy children and one more on the way, two cars, a couple of four-wheelers for entertainment — and we loved it. Then, the market turned and my husband’s job at a construction company was gone. The company was closing
down for good.
We both started looking for jobs right away, but there weren’t any to be found. With each passing day we were getting increasingly worried and we continued to work together in order to pull our family through. The more we pulled together, the closer we got. I felt feelings of
admiration for my husband that I hadn’t felt in years.
That’s why it was so hard for me to watch him blame himself for our present situation. I continually asked him to stop, but he seemed to want to punish himself for not having a job.
Finally, one afternoon I pulled him aside and said, “We have four healthy children. That’s what’s important. That makes you a rich man.”

struggling together I had found that deep love for him that I had on the day we said “I do”.
I could see his shoulders and neck relaxed. He held me close and we were able to talk and plan and dream together in a way that we hadn’t for quite some time. It was a turning point for us as a couple and a family.

Passage 2
When Andrea Peterson landed her first teaching job, she faced the daunting task of creating a music program with almost no money for equipment or supplies in a climate where
standards-based learning was the focus and music just provided a break for students and teachers.
For her drive and creativity in overcoming those challenges, she’s been named national teacher of the year.
Principal Waynes Kettler said he’s worked with many outstanding teachers in his 22 years as an educator, but Peterson is “just that one step above anybody I’ve ever worked with before.”
Kettler and others at Monte Cristo Elementary School talk about the ways she has
introduced the learning from other classrooms into her music program and her creativity in working around things such as the lack of money for new music.
When students were reading S. E. Hinton’s novel The Outsiders in their regular classroom, Peterson helped them write a 30-minute play with scenes from the book. Then they chose three
Broadway tunes that focused on race, equality and social justice, the themes ofthe book. Peterson composed two other songs herself after classroom discussions about the play and the book.
The honor means a lot to residents of Granie Falls. It’s inspiring to know that people from small towns can even win national honors.
As national teacher of the year, Peterson will spend the next year outside classroom, as a national and international spokeswoman for education.
Not surprisingly, she is a big believer in the value of arts education. She said it’s essential for schools to offer classes such as art or music and physical education because for some kids one of those subjects is the only thing that motivates them to come back to school day after day.

And even if they are caught, it is hard to punish them because there are no witnesses and often no evidence. A computer cannot remember who used it; it simply does what it is told. The head teller at a New York City bank
used a computer to steal more than one and a half billion dollars in just four years. No one noticed this theft because he moved the money from one account to another. Each time a customer he had robbed questioned the balance in his account, the teller claimed a computer error, then replaced
the missing money from someone else’s account. This man was caught only because he was a
gambler (赌徒) . When the police broke up an illegal gambling operation, his name was in the

lives have to our real ones. 故选 A。

experienced because I found it hard to connect with the people on my course. 因此,当她说“University life wasn’t the walk in the park I had expected” 时,她是说大学生活并不像她预期的那样容易或愉快。
根据第五段中““As I walked into my first class, I tried my hardest to smile at everyone and make friends. But I was shocked by how blank some people were. I said to one guy, ‘Wow, LCF, I still can’t believe I’m here’. He replied, ‘Well, LCF is lucky to have me. ’ I don’t

My time at university may not have been the dream that I
signed up for, but it has made me who I am. LCF did not provide me with the social experience I dreamed of, but it has made me appreciate the good friends I have kept from my childhood and
each new one I have made here. Studying in London was frightening at times, but I have become much more independent as a result.

Then, in 1953, Hillary and a Nepalese (尼泊尔的) climber named Tenzing Norgay became the first two people to reach the top of the world.( 到 20 世纪 50 年代初,已有数次远征队试图攀登珠穆朗玛峰的峰顶,但都以失败告终。 以及根据第三段“He joined an expedition to Antarctica and reached the South Pole in 1958. He also made an expedition up the Ganges River to its source in
the Himalayas. 以及根据最后一段“Although Hillary was best known as the young man who climbed to the summit of Mt. Everest in the 1950s, he
continued his journeys to far-off places into his senior years. For instance, in his mid-sixties
Hillary flew to the North Pole with Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon.

Himalayan Trust(信托基金). It raised millions of dollars and contributed to schools, hospitals and many other public improvements in the Sherpa villages of Nepal.
