Kate: Oh, I was doing some chores while my mother was preparing lunch. The earthquake took us by surprise too.
Jiaming: Well, I’m glad we’re all fine. Thanks for calling!

Susan: Oh no ... I heard many people couldn’t get home. They had to stay in hotels for the night.

过去进行时(Past Continuous)
结构:was/were + 现在分词 (doing)
含义:表示过去某一时刻 / 某一段时间正在进行的动作。
询问句型:
What were you doing at the time?
What were you doing when it started?
What were you doing while it was snowing?
过去进行时常和 when/while 引导的时间状语连用
Let’s learn
when:可接短暂性动作(如 called, shook),强调 “一个动作发生时,另一个动作正在进行”。例如:
My family were having dinner when she called.
I was doing my homework when the building shook all of a sudden
while:常接延续性动作(如 was preparing lunch, was snowing),强调两个动作同时进行。
I was doing some chores while my mother was preparing lunch.
