三、阅读理解:本大题共15小题,共30分。
A
What is your earliest childhood memory? Can you remember learning to walk?Or talk? The first time you watched a television program?Adults seldom call back events much earlier than the year or so before entering school, just as children younger than three or four seldom remember any specific, personal experiences. It's as if a curtain is drawn over the early years of our lives, hiding away countless precious moments.
A variety of explanations have been suggested by psychologists for this "childhood amnesia".Some proposed that the brain's memory—forming structures aren't fully developed in early childhood.Others thought it could be due to the lack of a sense of self-identity in young children. Now Annette Simms,a psychologist of Riverdale University, offers a new explanation for childhood amnesia.According to Dr.Simms, children need to lear to use someone else's spoken description of their personal experiences in order to turn their own short-term,fast-forgotten impressions of them into long-term memories. In other words, children have to talk about their experiences and hear others talk about them.Without this verbal reinforcement(语言强化),children cannot form permanent memories of what they have experienced.
So why should personal memories depend so heavily on hearing them described?Dr.Simms presents evidence that the human mind organizes memories in that way-Children whose mothers talk with them about the day's activities before bedtime tend to remember more of the day's special event than those whose mothers don't.Talking about an event in this way helps a child to remember it.And learning to organize memories as a continuous story is the key to a permanent mental"autobiography(自传)"of important life events.Dr.Simms suggests that we humans may be biologically programmed to turn our life experiences into a novel.
"The key to creating this mental life story is language,"says Dr.Simms."Children learn to talk about the past,"she says."Talking to others about their short-term memories of the past leads to the establishment(建立) of long-term memories."One way it does this is by helping a child to recognize that the retelling of an experience is just the experience itself, recreated in the form of words. The child learns that this"word-description"of an experience can then be stored in the memory and called back at any time. But a child's language skills are usually not ready for this until the age of three or four,so they have no way to remember the earliest of their experiences.
31.According to the passage, how can children form long-term memories? ______
A. They can create a story in their own ways.
B. They can share their experiences with their parents.
C. They can be patient to wait themselves to grow older.
D. They can develop good relationships with their friends.
32.According to Dr.Simms,why can't children form long-term memories before 3? ______
A. Because they can't remember their experiences.
B. Because they haven't developed enough language skills.
C. Because they haven't learned to write a novel by themselves.
D. Because they can't tell the differences between memories and experiences.
33.What is the passage mainly about? ______
A. The link between childhood memories and storytelling skills.
B. How language skills improve the ability to form long-term memories.
C. How verbal reinforcement helps children create long-term memories.D The difference between short-term and long-term memories in children.

(Nancy lives with Bill Sikes,a dangerous thief(小偷),and she is also part of the criminal world he belongs to.Oliver is a young orphan(孤儿)who is in danger,as Sikes plans to harm him.)
Scene One
Nancy had known Sikes for a long time. She had learned to read his moods by the sound of his footsteps and the look in his eyes.
That night, the dark room smelled of smoke and damp(潮湿的)walls.Shadows(阴影)moved on the walls, making the room feel smaller and colder. As Sikes spoke of Oliver, his voice was calm, which scared her more than his anger.
"You'll do as I say,"he told her.
Nancy said nothing, but his words lay heavily on her mind. She held the table hard, trying not to shake.
Scene Two
Later, when Sikes had gone out,Nancy sat alone. The house was silent except for the floor making noise. She thought of Oliver—small, helpless, and surrounded by people who wanted to hurt him.
"I'm no better than the rest,"she said to herself."But he is different."
The cold wind pressed against the window, making the room feel even lonelier. At last, she stood up,pulled her coat closely around her,and went out into the dark streets, where street lights shone on the wet stone road.
Scene Three
Nancy met Rose Maylie and Mr.Brownlow in secret.Fog was around their feet.Nancy spoke quickly and every time she heard voices far away, she looked back.
"I am the cause of all this.I am not worth your notice or your kindness.I don't ask you to pity me,"she said."—only to protect the boy."
They listened in silence. When she finished,Rose reached for her hand, but Nancy drew it back(撤回).
"It's enough that you know,"Nancy said."I must go."
Scene Four
Nancy returned to Sikes. The room still smelled of smoke.A cold wind came through the small window, making the curtains move a little. She knew what her choice might cost her,but she did not regret it.
Sikes sat on a wooden chair, his eyes fixed on her as if trying to read her mind.
"You've been out,"he said.Nancy stood near the door, her hands folded in front.
"Yes,"Nancy answered.
Nothing more was said, but the danger had already begun.

Scientists are confused about two newly discovered stars. The two stars, one of which was announced this month in the journal Nature, send out long pulses(速冲)of radio waves about every 20 minutes. This means they move much more slowly, and they have other characteristics that astronomers can't explain."We are all still quite amazed,"says astronomer Natasha Hurley-Walker,who led the discovery of both of these surprising sources.
The mystery began in 2021,when Hurley-Walker and her colleagues discovered a slowly repeating radio pulse. It shone for three months. But by the time they discovered it in the records, its activity had died down, and it had become invisible in the skies. In a January 2022 paper, the scientists suggested the object could be a kind of star called a magnetar(磁死星).But the object, with the name GLEAM-XJ162759.5-523504.3,sent out a pulse every 18 minutes instead of every few seconds like known magnetars.
It also had no X-ray signal associated with the radio emission(放射),which doesn't fit with magnetar theories. And strangely, the object's magnetic field was likely much stronger than previously seen.So the scientists began looking for other similar objects. In June 2022,Hurley-Walker and her colleagues began observing the entire visible sky every three nights.Almost immediately, they found something that sent out a radio flash every 21 minutes.
At first glance,it looked similar to the previously discovered object. But once the team began to dig through data for additional pulses from this source, named GPM J1839-10,the object seemed more perplexing.Unlike the first star, the signal of J1839-10 was detected over decades.
For now, researchers assume both objects are the same. But why would one flash for three months and the other for 33 years and counting?"I don't know,"says Hurley-Walker."That's the problem."
38.What can be learned about the two newly discovered stars? ______
A. They were made public in Nature this month.
B. They move at the slowest speed of all known stars.
C. They send out short radio waves every 20 minutes.
D. They are unlike the stars astronomers have seen before.
39.How often do known magnetars send out a pulse? ______
A. Every 18 minutes. B. Every 20 minutes.
C. Every 21 minutes. D. Every few seconds.
40.What drove scientists to look for the second star? ______
A. Strange characteristics of the first star.
B. The assumption of the magnetar theories.
C. Radio waves research project.
D. The government's guidance program.
41.What's Hurley-Walker's reaction towards the result of their observation? ______
A. Critical. B. Puzzled C. Defensive D. Favorable.
D
①Life is full of unexpected moments — like a sudden test or a friend forgetting our plans. When these happen,we often face a choice:to react (反应) right away,or to respond (回应) thoughtfully (深思熟虑地)?These two words sound similar, but they are different ways to solve problems.Knowing the difference helps us make smarter choices.
② Reacting is what our brain does naturally — it's fast, and it comes from our first feelings. Here are the situations:if you get a bad test grade, you might throw the paper angrily or say "I'm terrible!" without thinking. If a friend breaks your favourite pencil, you might shout at him before he says sorry. That's reacting:something happens, strong feelings come, and you act without pausing (停顿).This often leads to regrets (后悔),because you don't take time to cool down or see the whole picture.
③ Responding, however,is more thoughtful. Before solving the problem,it helps to create more space. This space helps us to notice our feelings and understand the situation clearly. It may take longer time, but we'll greatly avoid our regrets later.Four steps help us respond in a smart way:pause, process, plan, and act.
④ This way of responding works for many kinds of problems. We might just forget our homework at home or have an fight with a friend.Instead of reacting right away, try the following four steps:first, stop and take three deep breaths.Second, say to ourselves how we're feeling and find out what the problem is.Third, think about what choices we have.Fourth, choose the best one and do it.
⑤ A study from UCLA shows that a simple thing works out well when we're processing — speaking out our feelings like saying "I'm worried," or "I'm angry." It can greatly make us feel less worried, because we jump out of the situation to see the whole picture.
⑥ At every crossroad,we may meet the unexpected moments. The choice between reacting and responding greatly affects our life journey.By practicing the art of thoughtful response again and again,we change the unexpected into chances for improving ourselves.
42.According to the passage, which two adjectives best describe "reacting"? ______
A. Fast and thoughtful. B. Slow and natural.
C. Fast and natural. D. Slow and unexpected.
43.How does the writer explain the idea of reacting in Para.2? ______
A. By giving examples. B. By listing reasons.
C. By making comparisons. D. By asking questions.
44.Which shows the right order of the 4 responding steps from the passage?
(You forgot to bring your book to school ...)
Step 1 Step 2 Step 3 Step 4
A Take 3 deep breaths. Run to ask the teacher at once. "Why did I forget?" "Could I borrow
one from others?"
B Close eyes for 3 seconds. "The real problem is that I have no book." "Could I borrow one from Amy or ask the teacher for help?" Go to ask Amy politely.
C Take 3 slow breaths. "Could I borrow one from Tom or ask the teacher for help?" Ask Tom for help. "Did I check my bag before?"
D "Oh no!I forgot my book!" Take 3 deep breaths. "Why didn't mom check my bag?" Call mom in class.
______
A. A B. B C. C D. D
45.What is the best structure of the passage? ______
A.
B.
C.
D.
四、任务型阅读-完成表格:本大题共1小题,共10分。
46. You're doing homework and a hard question appears. You don't know the answer. Many students will reach for their smart phones to look up the answer online. While convenient(方便的),is this a good study method?
Arnold Glass,a psychology professor in the US,carried out a study on this issue.Over a period of 11 years,Glass studied the academic performance of thousands of college students. He found that while 14 percent of students scored lower on exams than homework in 2008,the number rose to 55 percent in 2017 when more students started using smart phones to help with homework.
Looking up answers will clearly help students get high homework scores. However, this often leads to students quickly forgetting both the question and answer,Glass said 'As a result, they transform(转化)homework from what has been, until now,a useful exercise into a meaningless ritual(惯例)that does not help in preparing for exams,"he noted.
Instead,Glass said students should read a homework question, think about it and generate(给出)their own answer.Doing this first, and checking an answer online afterward, will have a positive long-term effect on exam scores. However,if you find and copy the correct answer, you'll be less likely to remember it in the future.
Of course, using devices(设备)to look up answers is nothing new,but Glass's study does highlight(提问)something important.Getting the right answer quickly may not get us the best grade in the end.
Problem Many students look up the answer online when a hard question appears.
Result of the study carried out on the issue The number of students scored lower on exams than homework in 2017 was(1) ______ than that of students in 2008 when students used smart phones to help with homework.
Advantages of looking up answers It will clearly(2) ______ students' homework scores.
Disadvantages of looking up answers The question will not be remembered,(3) ______ will the answer.
Ways to deal with the problem (4) ______ checking the answer online before you read a homework question, think about it and come up with your own answer.
Conclusion It's nothing strange to look up answer, but what(5) ______ most is that getting the right answer quickly may not get you the best grade finally.
