In Shenzhen, many rooftops (外屋顶) become sky farms. On the sky farms, people grow flowers, fruits, and vegetables. These farms help people get close to nature in the city. At the Shenzhen Lily Flower Town, there's a special sky farm. It doesn't use earth (土壤). Workers grow plants in special water solutions (溶液). The farm opened in 2024 and works with local communities and schools to help people learn about plants.
If you stay at a hotel (酒店) and you can pick fresh herbs (草料) on a sky farm on its roof, how fantastic it will be! Visitors can just do that at the Yun Resort Shenzhen Longcheer. And the herbs can be used to cook special dishes then.
Even schools are joining the fun. One school has built a rooftop garden for learning. Students can take part in farming activities as part of their labour practice (劳动实践) classes. Xia Yufan, a student, says she can learn things that teachers don't teach in a classroom. "I can watch how the seeds sprout (种子发芽) and grow little by little. It feels great," she says.
But it's not just farms up there. Some rooftops turn into coffee shops, outdoor movie theatres, and even places to camp! These special rooftops are like sky gardens for city people to enjoy nature and learn new things, high above the busy streets below.

People choose where to live for many reasons—the house, the location, or good schools—but almost never because of who their neighbors might be. Since we can't choose our neighbors, fences help create comfortable boundaries (边界) between homes.
According to sociologist (社会学家) Douglas B. Currivan, most people want to know their neighbors just a little bit, but not too much. Fences mark where one property ends and another begins. They let people enjoy their private space while still being able to wave hello from a comfortable distance. Fences also prevent common neighbor problems like noisy pets or children wandering into others' yards.
Research shows that clear boundaries actually help neighbors get along better. "When property lines are unclear, arguments between neighbors are more likely," explains Professor Daniel Stokols. Surprisingly, fences can even improve neighborhood safety. Studies show that burglars (入室窃贼) are less likely to target homes with fences, even small decorative ones, because they signal (示意) that the owners care about their property.
However, the type of fence matters a great deal. A very tall, solid fence might seem unfriendly, while a shorter fence or a row of bushes feels more welcoming. Some people use plants or small walls to mark property lines in a nicer way. There are even "spite fences"—unusually tall or ugly fences built just to annoy neighbors, which sometimes lead to legal problems.
While fences separate properties, they can also bring neighbors together by creating a sense of security and order. One New York resident, Karen Pace, discovered this when she removed an old fence and suddenly felt uncomfortable without her private outdoor space.
Good neighbors are careful about each other's space when putting up fences, and good fences help neighbors maintain just the right amount of friendly distance.
41. What is the main purpose (目的) of fences in marking properties
A. To decorate the yard beautifully.
B. To attract wildlife to the neighborhood.
C. To provide shade for outdoor activities.
D. To show where one person's land stops and another's starts.
42. According to the article, why do burglars avoid homes with fences
A. Because fences are too expensive to climb over.
B. Because fences signal that owners care about their property.
C. Because fences make too much noise when they are touched.
D. Because fences are always dangerous.
43. What did Karen Pace discover when she removed her old fence
A. Her neighbors became much friendlier.
B. She felt uncomfortable without her private outdoor space.
C. Her property value increased immediately.
D. Burglars started targeting her home.
44. What can we infer about "spite fences" from the text
A. They are built to protect pets. B. They are designed to be beautiful.
C. They are meant to annoy neighbors. D. They help neighbors become closer.
45. Which of the following would be the BEST title for this article
A. The History of Fences B. Why We Should Remove All Fences

Folk houses in China
On Sept. 17, the RCF Experimental School in Beijing held a special exhibition on folk(民间的)houses in China. Around 100 models of folk houses made by students were on show. Students used different materials to create their beautiful models. Below are two stories behind their work.
Admiring how Matou Walls(马头墙)stop fires
Wu Maolin found Matou Walls in the region south of the Yangtze River interesting because they look like staircases(楼梯). Before making his model, he looked up why they are built this way. In these areas, houses are built close together. Because of this, if one house catches fire, it could quickly spread to others. To prevent this, people build Matou Walls that rise above the roofs.
Taking a look at folk houses in Xizang
Wang Guanzhi made a model of a traditional Tibetan folk house called diao fang(碉房). Before making it, she learned online that most of them are built of stones and wood because of the cold weather there. But it was not an easy job to build a small house using big stones, so she used paper instead.
