For Antonella Positano, her passion for art and architecture traces back to her childhood.
“As a child, I loved creating imaginary houses with LEGO, and many of my childhood drawings were about landscapes and little houses,” the artist recalled. Today, this love serves as the
foundation of her architectural illustrations, made with dynamic lines of black ink that breathe life into these buildings.
“The purpose when I choose an architectural subject to represent is to highlight its essence (本质) through my hand,” Positano said. “I often let myself be guided by the interaction I feel
with a particular subject, but it’s almost always them choosing me, not the other way around. I don’t have any particular preferences.”
As a fan of Giovanni Battista Piranesi, she always looks for volume that can translate into strong contrasts and let her play with shadows. Positano, who is about to finish her Architecture
degree, uses high-quality photographs as references for her illustrations. “The images allow me to carefully analyze the particulars and work calmly on the composition, reflecting on the final result I want to achieve,” she explained. “I use them as references, but they’re never a guide to follow
strictly for completing the work; at that point, it would just be a faithful copy, and I love authenticity (真实性).
While she has experimented with other tools, Positano admits that nothing matches the excitement of black ink. “I enjoy how using a pen lets me control the thickness of the lines as I want. I use ink in my work because I see it as the link between the past and present.”
Ultimately, Positano shares that she doesn’t seek recognition or commercial success but the power to move others through the universal language of architecture. “I know I’ve succeeded
when I see emotions like inspiration in the eyes of those who view my works at exhibitions.”
4 .What was Positano’s childhood passion for
A .Building real houses.
B .Playing with various toys.
C .Drawing landscapes and little houses.
D .Reading books about architecture.
5 .How does Positano choose her architectural subjects to illustrate
A .She selects them based on their popularity.
B .She randomly picks any architectural subject.
C .She has specific preferences for certain styles.
D .She lets the subjects choose her based on her feelings
6 .What is the main idea of the third paragraph
A .Positano’s way of creating illustrations.
B .The importance of high-quality photographs in art.
C .The strict guidelines she follows for her illustrations.
D .The influence of her Architecture degree on her work.
7 .What is Positano’s ultimate goal in her architectural illustrations
A .Gaining commercial success. B .Touching hearts with architecture.
C .Winning awards and recognition. D .Selling her works at high prices.

A rare painting, purchased for $4 at a second-hand store in 2017, turned out to be an
original Newell Convers Wyeth sold today for $191,000 during Bonhams Skinner’s American Art auction (拍卖). Not the much talked-about quarter-of-a-million, but it was also not a bad return.
The names of both the original second-hand store shopper and today’s buyer have not been shared.
“Newell Convers Wyeth was one of the distinguished illustrators in the early 20th century,” says Maine conservator Lauren Lewis. Among Newell Convers Wyeth’s best-known book
illustrations are the vivid images he made for Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1911 novel Treasure
Island. He’s also the father of painter Andrew Wyeth and the grandfather of painter Jamie Wyeth. The painting is one of four illustrations Wyeth did for a 1939 edition of Helen Hunt Jackson’s
Ramona.
Looking around in a New Hampshire second-hand store for old frames (框架) to restore, a local woman, who, again, has chosen to remain undisclosed to the press, bought a white frame
with an old painting inside for $4. She had no idea that the painting was actually a rare work by noted American artist N. C. Wyeth. “It’s everybody’s dream to own a Wyeth,” says Lewis, who helped determine the painting was an original Wyeth.
This past May, while cleaning, the second-hand store shopper came across the painting in her cupboard. Thinking it might have value, she posted images of it on a website devoted to
Wyeth. “N. C. Wyeth painted commonly on a brand (品牌) of panel called Renaissance Panel made by the Weber company,” says Lewis. Another, smaller label on the back identified it as an N. C. Wyeth and from the book Ramona, Lewis determined the work was indeed an original
Wyeth.
Lewis hopes that the buyer of the Ramona painting will make it available to the general
public. “There’s nothing like seeing an original painting,” she says. “I do hope that it remains in a collection that will be willing to lend it — or even give it to a museum.”
8 .What does the author intend to do in paragraph 2
A .Add some background information. B .Provide some tips for the readers.
C .Introduce the following paragraphs. D .Present some more famous painters.
9 .Why did the second-hand store shopper buy the painting
A .To resell it for a big profit. B .To do some DIY repairment.
C .To decorate her new house. D .To enrich her existing collection.
10 .How did Lewis determine the work an original work
A .By examining the painting’s style.
B .By checking the artist’s signature.
C .By identifying the marker on the panel.
D .By comparing it with other Wyeth paintings.
11 .What can we infer about Lewis from the last paragraph
A .She’s interested in buying the painting.
B .She wants the painting shared publicly.
C .She urges the buyer to resell the painting.
D .She highly praises the value of the painting.

Even walking as few as 4,000 steps a day may reduce your risk of dying from any cause, the largest analysis to date suggests-although the more you walk, the greater the health benefits.
The idea that a sedentary (久坐的) lifestyle is linked to poorer health is well-established, but it has been unclear what the optimal (最佳的) number of steps people should aim for is, and whether there is an upper limit beyond which further health gains are minimal.
To investigate, researchers led by Maciej Banach, a professor of cardiology (心脏病学) at the Medical University of Lodz in Poland, drew on data from 17 previous studies — involving
226,889 people, who were followed for an average seven years — to assess the health impacts of different daily step counts.
The study, published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, suggested that
walking at least 3,967 steps a day started to reduce the risk of dying from any cause, while 2,337 steps a day reduced the risk of dying from cardiovascular (心血管的) diseases. Above these
cut-offs, each increase of 1,000 steps a day was associated with a 15% reduction in the risk of
dying from any cause, while an increase of 500 steps a day was associated with a 7% reduction in dying from cardiovascular disease.
“Our study confirms that the more you walk, the better. We found that this applied to both men and women, regardless of age, and regardless of where you live,” Banach said. For younger
age groups, the sharpest improvement in health was seen in individuals taking between 7,000 and 13,000 daily steps, while for those aged 60 years and over, it was at between 6,000 to 10,000
steps.
James Leiper, the associate medical director at the British Heart Foundation, said, “This research shows us just how good walking is for our health. If you packaged the benefits as a pill, we would be praising it as a wonder drug. What’s great about walking is that it does not require special equipment or training, and you can do it almost anywhere.”
12 .Why did the researchers do the study
A .To seek reasons for cardiovascular diseases.
B .To compare different ways of keeping healthy.
C .To test whether walking can reduce early death.
D .To find out the ideal number of steps for improved health.
13 .How did the researchers draw their conclusions
A .By comparing the results. B .By listing some examples.
C .By surveying the participants. D .By using data from earlier investigations.
14 .What is James Leiper’s opinion about walking
A .It isn’t a wonder drug. B .It does not require training.
C .It has minimal health benefits. D .It should be done in specific areas.
15 .What’s the best title for the text
A .The Risks of a Sedentary Lifestyle
B .The Healthy Lifestyle for All Age Groups
C .The Benefits and Harm Walking Can Bring
D .Walking As Few As 4,000 Steps a Day Can Reduce Risk of Dying

Li Hua, a senior student, had always been quiet and shy. He was good at English writing
but was afraid to speak in public. Whenever his English teacher Mr. Wang asked him to answer
questions in class, his face would turn red, his hands would shake, and he could barely say a word.
Last month, Mr. Wang announced to the class that there would be an English speech
contest. “It’s a great chance to practice oral English and build confidence,” he said. “True courage doesn’t mean having no fear — it means going ahead when you’re scared.” Li Hua’s heart raced — he wanted to challenge himself, but the thought of standing in front of the class made him
anxious.
After class, his best friend Xiao Ming encouraged him: “You’re talented! I’ll practice with you every evening.” Mr. Wang also noticed his hesitation and said, “I believe in you — your
writing shows your thoughts.” Encouraged, Li Hua signed up. He chose “My Dream of Becoming a Translator” as his topic and spent weeks revising his draft. But when practicing aloud, he always forgot his words, feeling upset.
On the contest day, the classroom was decorated with balloons. Students spoke confidently one by one, winning applause (掌声). Li Hua sat in the back, feeling so nervous. Just then, Mr.
Wang called his name. He stood up slowly, legs trembling as he walked to the stage. All eyes were on him. He took a deep breath, glanced at Xiao Ming’s thumbs-up, and thought of Mr. Wang’s words...

At that moment, Mr. Wang’s encouragement and Xiao Ming’s support gave him strength.
He held the draft tightly and started speaking. At first, his voice was shaky and barely audible, but as he talked about his deep love for English and his sincere dream of bridging cultural gaps
between different countries, his eyes lit up with passion. He consciously slowed down his pace, gradually forgot his nervousness, and spoke more and more steadily. The classroom was so quiet that even a pin drop could be heard, with everyone sitting upright and listening carefully to his
every word.
When Li Hua finished, the class burst into warm applause. Xiao Ming cheered loudly and waved his hands excitedly, while Mr. Wang smiled proudly and nodded at him: “You did
amazing! I’m so proud of you!” Li Hua’s face flushed with joy and pride. Walking back to his
seat, he felt a strong sense of achievement flooding his heart. From then on, he no longer feared public speaking at all. He realized that as long as he dared to step out of his comfort zone and try,
he could overcome his inner fears and grow into a braver version of himself.
