It was December 25, 1914, only 5 months into World War I. German, British, and French soldiers, already sick and tired of the senseless killing, disobeyed their superiors and started socializing with “the enemy” along two-thirds of the Western Front.
German troops held up Christmas trees with signs, “Merry Christmas”. Thousands of troops ran across the battlefields covered with dead bodies. They sang Christmas songs, exchanged photographs of loved ones back home, shared food and even played football. Soldiers hugged men they had been trying to kill a few short hours before. They agreed to warn each other if their officers forced them to fire their weapons, and to aim high.
Fear ran through the military leaders on both sides. They felt that their power was being challenged: soldiers declaring their brotherhood with each other and refusing to fight. Generals declared this unexpected peacemaking illegal and said that participating soldiers would face a military court. Those found guilty would be imprisoned or even shot. By March 1915 the socializing movement had been destroyed and the killing machine was back in full operation. Over the next three years more than fifteen million people died in the war.
Not many people have heard the story of the Christmas Truce. On Christmas Day, 1988, a local radio host in Boston played “Christmas in the Trenches”, a song about the Christmas Truce, several times and was stunned by his listeners’ response. Thousands of people called in, praising the song, with many moved to tears by the amazing events it described.
You can probably guess why the callers were in tears. The Christmas Truce story goes against most of what we have been taught about people. It lets us see the world as it can be and says, “This really happened once.” It shows us the potential we have as humans contradicts all of those TV and newspaper stories that tell us how mean and heartless people are. It is like hearing that our deepest wishes really are true: the world really can be different.
4.Why did the soldiers begin socializing with the enemy
A.Because they couldn’t bear the meaningless killing.
B.Because it was the best way to avoid being killed.
C.Because they feared that they would be caught.
D.Because their enemies were from similar backgrounds.
5.How did the generals finally put an end to the soldiers’ socializing
A.They sent the soldiers’ loved ones to prison.
B.They moved the two groups of soldiers further apart.
C.They increased the number of officers to control the soldiers.
D.They warned the soldiers that they would face severe punishment.
6.What does the underlined word “stunned” in Paragraph 4 most probably means
A.satisfied. B.shocked. C.amused. D.confused.
7.What does the author imply about human beings by using the story of the soldiers
A.They are not trustworthy under stress.
B.They are naturally aggressive and war-like.
C.They are basically caring and kindhearted.
D.They will always do what is in their own self-interest.
Once a vast wasteland, Saihanba in Hebei province has been transformed into a thriving forest with 500 million trees. This remarkable change is the result of sixty years of hard work by three generations of foresters. Their story serves as a powerful example of how human determination and nature can work together to create a sustainable environment, showing that long-term effort can bring huge rewards for the planet.
The task was incredibly challenging, especially on the final 7,000 hectares of rocky mountainsides. Since machines could not reach these steep areas, all the work had to be done by hand or with the help of animals to carry supplies. Workers had to dig out rocks before planting a single tree, showing incredible physical strength and deep commitment to their goal. This difficult process laid the foundation for the green landscape we see today.
Initially, the forest was planted with only a single type of tree, which made it vulnerable to pests and diseases. To build a stronger and healthier forest, the foresters began introducing various tree species, creating a more balanced and natural ecosystem. This shift from a monoculture to a mixed forest greatly improved its ability to resist harm and ensured its long-term survival.
Protecting this huge forest also requires modern technology. An advanced system, powered by artificial intelligence, now constantly monitors the forest for signs of pests and diseases, allowing for quick action. Furthermore, a complete fire prevention system uses satellites, drones, and ground patrols to provide 100% coverage, ensuring any potential fire can be spotted and dealt with immediately. Through projects like Saihanba, China has become the world’s largest contributor to new green areas, accounting for about a quarter of the global increase over the last two decades.

9.What can be inferred about the foresters’ work on the rocky mountainsides
A.It was a job that required great patience and strength.
B.It was mainly completed with the help of machines.
C.It was considered less important than planting on flat land.
D.It was finished in a short period due to high efficiency.
10.How did the foresters improve the forest’s ability to survive
A.By planting more trees of the original kind.
B.By increasing the number of tree species.
C.By relying solely on natural recovery processes.
D.By using more chemical fertilizers.
11.What is the global significance of the Saihanba project according to the passage
A.It has set a new standard for fire prevention technology.
B.It has made China a leader in increasing global green space.
C.It has solved the problem of desertification worldwide.
D.It has provided a new model for international cooperation.
Will artificial intelligence (AI) replace my job This is a question that many people think about these days. At present, the application of AI robotics in professional fields, as well as ChatGPT’s abilities to write essays, solve complex problems and more, have heightened moral concerns.
Some people see AI as the ultimate cure for society’s most fundamental problems, while others fear that AI will overtake human intelligence. These two views are based on the assumption that AI is better and smarter than humanity and may ultimately replace human decision-making. But given the fact that technology is the product of human civilization, the challenge from AI is something we have created for ourselves as we keep pushing our own boundaries. In other words, AI’s progress, functions and future direction are all determined by the human brain.
Before AI becomes a threat to humanity, the international community should reach an agreement on the role it is to play. More importantly, related laws and regulations must ensure that AI will benefit society and prevent it from threatening human life. Robots, for example, are believed to develop emotional intelligence sometime, which enables them to recognize, understand and express emotions in a way that is similar to humans, but we must avoid AI copying human emotions. Without legal restrictions, AI may become a social disaster.
The AI-driven new industrial revolution is irreversible. This, like previous ones, which introduced changes that had been unimaginable before, will certainly affect human employment. But it always turned out humanity was able to adapt to each industrial revolution and create new forms of employment. Therefore, it’s unnecessary to worry AI will replace our jobs. While technology advances at a rapid pace, what we need to do is to welcome the AI era rather than block its unfolding for fear of the unknown.
12.What does the author imply about AI’s future
A.It will be too complex to control.
B.It depends on human innovation.
C.It will be regulated more strictly.
D.It may outperform the human brain.
13.How can we prevent AI’s potential threat
A.By stirring emotions. B.By blocking functions.
C.By setting restrictions. D.By changing regulations.
14.What does the underlined word “irreversible” in the last paragraph mean
A.Undesirable. B.Unavoidable.
C.Unpredictable. D.Unbelievable.
15.What does the writer suggest readers do with the coming of the AI era
A.Deal with it positively. B.Accept it passively.
C.Respond to it randomly. D.Defend it unconditionally.
Alfred Nobel Rests in Peace
People like Martin Luther King Jr. , Nelson Mandela, and Mother Teresa have become famous all around the world. 16 They are all winners of the Nobel Peace Prize. But none of them would have received the recognition it brings had it not been for one Swedish man, Alfred Nobel.
When Alfred joined the Nobel family company, it had been developing explosives for many years. His father had started the family fortune by working for the Russian army to produce landmines and sea mines. But the family made even more money by manufacturing nitroglycerine, which was a very dangerous explosive.
One day Alfred arrived home to find his 20-year-old brother Emil had been killed in a nitroglycerine explosion. 17 The result was dynamite (甘油炸药),which became an immediate success all over the world.
Alfred Nobel always wanted dynamite to be used for peaceful means. Unfortunately. when the First World War ended. dynamite had been used to take away the lives of thousands of young men. 18 To see his invention being used in this way made him very sad.
Sometime later Alfred's older brother Ludwig died. One newspaper accidentally printed Alfred's obituary instead of his brother's. It described Alfred as a man who had become rich by inventing a weapon of mass destruction. After reading the review of his life. Alfred was horrified and decided to use the great fortune he had made to reward people who had been working to promote good in society. 19 The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the person who had done the most,or the best, work to promote friendship between countries, to abolish armies or to hold and promote peace conferences.
In 1997 the Nobel Peace Prize went to an American called Jody Williams for her efforts to get landmines banned. 20 Perhaps now, Alfred Nobel will rest more easily in his grave.

C.Alfred was determined to invent a safer explosive.
D.He was so grieved by the accident that he even desired to give up his job.

F.Alfred had always hated war and considered it to be 'the horror of horrors and the greatest of all crimes’
G.The five awards he created were for physics. chemistry, medicine, literature and, most significantly, peace.

五、书面表达
47.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Last summer, I paid a visit to my grandparents’ peaceful village, far away from the noisy city life. Wandering along the narrow stone path, a small old wooden workshop at the corner of the street caught my eye. Inside, an elderly carpenter named Uncle Wang was buried in his work, surrounded by piles of smooth wood and various well-polished tools.
Having lived in the city for so long, I had always thought carpentry was a simple and easy task, requiring nothing but simple hand movements. Full of curiosity, I plucked up my courage to walk in and asked Uncle Wang if I could learn to make a small wooden box for my stationery. With a kind smile on his wrinkled face, Uncle Wang readily agreed and handed me a piece of raw wood and a small saw.
To my great surprise, the carpentry work turned out to be far more difficult than I had imagined. Holding the unfamiliar tools felt so awkward that my hands kept shaking. I cut the wood crookedly, and the edges were rough and uneven. After just half an hour, my arms ached badly, and my forehead was covered with sweat. Impatience took hold of me, and I almost threw the tools away, wanting to give up immediately. Noticing my frustration and impatience, Uncle Wang put down his work, walked over gently, and patted my shoulder. “Craftsmanship is never about speed or haste,” he said slowly in a warm voice. “It’s about devoting yourself to every single step, cherishing your work, and doing every detail with all your heart and patience.”
I stared at his hands — rough, calloused, and full of small scars left by years of hard labor and repeated work. But every piece of furniture he made was exquisitely crafted, with smooth surfaces and neat joints, showing the true beauty of careful handiwork.

47.One possible version:
I took a deep breath and decided to try again. Under his careful guidance, I learned to hold the tools steadily and smooth the wood slowly. Whenever I wanted to rush, Uncle Wang reminded me to stay calm and focused. I repeated the simple movements again and again, ignoring the pain in my arms and the sweat running down my face. Little by little, the rough wood began to take shape, and I started to enjoy the peace and pride that came from hard work. For the first time, I truly understood that real labor needed patience and devotion.
After days of practice, I finally finished my wooden box. It was not as perfect as Uncle Wang’s, but it was made with my whole heart. Holding it in my hands, I felt a strong sense of achievement. That summer experience taught me the true meaning of labor and the spirit of craftsmanship. Labor is not only a way to make things but also a lesson of persistence and responsibility. The spirit of craftsmanship will encourage me to take every task seriously and pursue excellence in my life and studies.
