Waste-to-Treasure Eco-Fashion Show
Our school held a remarkable Waste-to-Treasure Eco-Fashion Show in the school hall last Friday evening.
The show started with students displaying how they creatively transformed waste materials into nice clothes through
cutting, painting and piecing together. Many used plastic bags became elegant dresses and old newspapers were turned into
nice things to wear. The highlight arrived when models gracefully showcased these unique designs, drawing repeated
applause from the audience.
The show received positive response. Not only did it demonstrate practical creativity, but it also enhanced the
students’ environmental awareness, inspiring a greener future.
67.It was Mrs. Lehman herself. She leaned over the counter, her eyes crinkling with warmth. “Looking for your little
friend, dear A young man bought him yesterday. Said something about ‘saving him from shelf limbo’.” My heart sank.
Before I could ask more, she added, “He left this note for you.” Hand trembling, I unfolded the paper: “Check your bed at
noon. — R.” Glancing at the clock — 11:55 a.m. — I bolted home, confusion and hope tangled in my chest.
To my surprise, I found a box lying on my bed. A familiar floppy fin peeked through the ribbon. Tears blurred my vision as
I cradled Artie, his soft fur pressing against my cheek. Beneath him lay another note: “Even pirates need first mates. Don’t
drown him in your tears. — Captain Rick.” Laughter bubbled through my sniffles. From the doorway, Rick grumbled,
“You’re gonna wear his stitching out,” but his ears flushed pink. That night, Artie guarded my pillow, while Rick’s snores
echoed from the next room — a gruff lullaby of unexpected love.

M: You enjoy reading detective novels so much, so why don’t you try writing an original one by yourself
W: I’ve tried, but crime authors need to be good at creating complicated plots. That’s not really my strength as a
writer. My talent is in writing characters and relationships.
2.B
M: Have you heard that the local government has decided to turn the old golf course into a nature reserve Great
news for wildlife!
W: Yeah, I heard about it at the meeting yesterday! They’re also planning to add some cycle paths.
M: Oh, fantastic!
3.A
M: Hi, Olivia. All the equipment is set up in the music studio, so we’re ready to start recording as soon as you
arrive!
W: Great! Can you give me 10 minutes to finish my tea and warm up my voice
M: No problem.

W: Joanna suggested a place right near the subway station for dinner. Oh look, there it is! She said it’s popular with
the crowd who are going to the theater, because they serve you quickly.
M: Okay, good. We just have an hour until the show starts!
5.C
W: When you come to collect your certificate tomorrow, you need to prove your identity.
M: Okay. What kind of proof do you accept
W: Something with your photo and address on it, like your ID card or driver’s license.
6.B 7.B
M: A round-the-world trip. That sounds so exciting!
W: Yes, I can’t wait! I’ve always wanted to travel, but never had time. Now I’m retired and free to do it. I will fly to Sydney
on the 26th of April. I’m going to spend three weeks in Australia. Then I’ll spare a couple of weeks touring Japan by train.
M: Wonderful!
W: I’ve booked a boat trip. It will leave from Osaka, Japan on the 1st of June and the destination is Shanghai, China.
M: A boat !
W: Yeah! It takes two days, but I think it would be fun! I’m going to stay in China until the 1st of July. There’s just so
much to see!
8.A 9.B
W: It’s a shame that you didn’t get the project.
M: Thanks. I was quite annoyed at first. I’ve been working late recently. Meanwhile, Alan is off work as usual but still got
the task.
W: Yes, I’ve noticed how hard you’ve been working.
M: Well, honestly, that may have been my mistake.
W: What do you mean
M: Well, when I spoke to the boss about her decision, she mentioned how efficient and productive Alan is. So, I
watched him at work for a few days, and I found it’s true.
W: Really
M: Yeah. When he’s working, he’s really focused. And he doesn’t get tired or make silly mistakes because he is always
energetic and smart.
W: Right ...
M: So, I’ve decided to follow his example in the future. I need to learn to work wisely!
W: Great attitude!

W: Look, here’s one of us in our Christmas play costumes ... Look! It’s Gordon!
M: Oh, he was just a baby! He was a great dog, wasn’t he
W: Absolutely! Humans’ best friend.
M: I miss him. When I finally move out of Mom and Dad’s place, I’d love to get a dog.
W: I’ve definitely thought about it too.
M: Well, why don’t you keep one
W: It’s not as easy as that.
M: Why Your apartment building allows keeping pets. I’ve seen some of your neighbors with dogs. And you don’t need to
buy an expensive dog. You could get one free from a shelter.
W: I know. But keeping dogs needs a lot of time and attention, and I’m always busy working. The dog would get lonely.
M: I guess so ...
W: Besides, I love traveling overseas, and it’s not easy to go abroad with a dog. But maybe I’ll get one in a few years,
when I settle down and get married.

M: Oh dear. I’m sorry to hear that.
W: He fell asleep again at around 5:00 a.m. , but I woke up soon later. I thought I might as well get some work done.
M: Well, that’s really helpful, thanks. It gives me plenty of time to look at the figures before my presentation.
W: No problem! I’m not sure how much more work I’ll be able to do today. I expect my son will stay home from school.
M: It’s fine. The report is your big task today, right
W: Yes. I have a phone call with the Japanese customer, but I can probably move that to next week.

I saw my first wuxia film eight years ago, at the age of 12. Since then, this form of traditional Chinese stories has had
a huge impact on me. I was a pretty nervous person as a child, but wuxia heroes encouraged me to be brave and to do what’
s right. I particularly love the novels, although I enjoy the movies too. I love the stories that are inspired by real historical
people and events. During China’s Warring States period, many skilled warriors (战士) traveled around the country, seeking
adventures, employment or honorable causes. They were the real bases of today’s wuxia heroes. Those people came from
many different backgrounds. Historical documents and stories described them as being anyone from wealthy princes and
government officials to simple farmers and poets. Most of the heroes also seem to have come from northern China, where
the culture focused on freedom and military principles. While this kind of culture died out after the Warring States period,
they remained a popular subject in literature, particularly during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Though their stories have no
doubt been changed over the years, the idea of wuxia has left a lasting impact on Chinese culture and stories.高二年级 4 月校内自主训练

B.Call a customer.
Slightly more abstract, but still perfect-fitting, Australia’s Macquarie Dictionary chose a term that only could have been
created in 2025. “AI slop” describes generative-AI output that feels lazy, empty, or just wrong. If you clicked on that video of cats
dancing, you’ve been a victim of AI slop.

· Cambridge Dictionary word of the year: Parasocial
Cambridge went with a word that’s been slowly building up for years: “parasocial.” Originally an academic term, it now
broadly describes the one-sided relationships we form with creators, celebrities, and influencers. It’s the perfect description for an
era where you know your favourite YouTuber’s morning routine, or the personal details of a TikToker’s breakup, but they don’t
know you exist.

Isatou Ceesay was born in 1972 in a small village in Gambia Africa. As a teenager, Ceesay was forced to drop out of
school because of poverty. She carried some goods with many girls like her to sell in the market to raise herself. At that time, the
plastic bags, being strong and light, became popular in Gambia. The problem was that people did not reuse the bags and simply
threw them behind their homes. Over time, the houses were surrounded by trash.
Every December, dictionaries worldwide pick their Words of the Year — terms (术语) that show how people talked and
understood the world that year. In 2025, these chosen words are quite special. They cover topics like AI and popular but
meaningless online content. Here are some 2025 Words of the Year from different dictionaries.
Ceesay lived in such an environment for many years. She kept learning from the surrounding environment and planned to
take action to change. In 1997, she started a recycling movement called One Plastic Bag in Gambia. She educated women in

Gambia to recycle plastic waste into income for themselves. In the beginning, the movement had a mission to educate their village
colleagues about the need to reuse garbage and recycle plastic waste, rather than letting the garbage increase behind their homes.
Over time, the movement became big and able to support and provide income for women around. It was also able to greatly
reduce plastic waste in Gambia. But the work of collecting trash turned to be taxing. During the rainy season, plastic waste
became wet and difficult to take, and after that it still took patience to dry it before it could be processed.
Coral Reef Monitoring Network, half of the world's coral reefs have disappeared since 1950, and another 30% are at risk of
extinction by 2030. However, a new study published in Nature Communications in July 2025 has brought new hope for coral reef
restoration.
The study, led by a team of scientists from the University of Queensland and the Australian Institute of Marine Science, has
developed a new "coral seeding" technique that significantly increases the survival rate of young corals in the wild. Traditional
coral restoration methods usually involve transplanting fully grown coral fragments onto damaged reefs, which is labor-intensive,
costly, and has a survival rate of only around 30% in most cases.
Ceesay said, “As a habit, people are used to pouring their garbage behind their houses, and because it is not visible, they
forget it. But the bad effects again knock on your door very quickly-dirty air, various diseases and so on. Of course, if one man’s
house is clean but his neighbor’s is not, then the man is also not healthy.”
The new technique, by contrast, collects coral eggs and sperm during the annual coral spawning event, raises them into
baby corals in a controlled laboratory environment, and then plants them onto damaged reefs using specially designed
biodegradable carriers. These carriers, made from plant-based materials, can protect young corals from predators and ocean
currents, while gradually breaking down in the water without causing pollution.
For 17 years, Ceesay has contributed to one of the most important problems about the plastic waste. In 2012, she got the
TIAW Difference Maker Award in Washington, D.C., United States. Her story was written into a book, which inspires many
others to join or become makers of change in their own communities.

4.What can be learned about young Ceesay from Paragraph 1
A.She gave up the chance of going to school.
After a 12-month field trial on the Great Barrier Reef, the research team found that the survival rate of corals planted with
the new technique reached 78%, more than twice the rate of traditional methods. What's more, the corals grown with this method
showed higher tolerance to rising ocean temperatures, a key factor in coral bleaching events.
"Our technique solves two of the biggest problems in coral restoration: low survival rates and high cost," said Dr. Emma
Harrison, the lead author of the study. "We can produce hundreds of thousands of baby corals at a much lower cost than before,
and scale up the restoration work across entire reef systems." The research team is now working with local communities and
environmental organizations to apply this technique to other damaged coral reefs around the world, with projects planned in
Southeast Asia and the Caribbean in 2026.
B.She had many friends good at doing business.
C.She sold strong and light plastic bags to support herself
D.She lived in an environment heavily polluted by plastic waste.
5.What can we infer about Ceesay’s recycling movement
A.It aimed to make full use of natural resources to get rich.
B.It was hard to carry on because of the shortage of workers.
C.It benefited both people’s economic situation and the environment.
D.It taught the villagers to replace plastic bags with handmade ones.

1. What can we learn about the new coral seeding technique from the text
A. It uses plastic carriers to protect young corals.
B. It has been applied worldwide with great success.
C. It improves coral survival rate and heat tolerance.
D. It is more labor-intensive than traditional methods.
D
In an era dominated by short videos, 15-second social media posts, and endless digital notifications, deep reading – the
slow, immersive practice of engaging with a long-form text – is often dismissed as an outdated habit. However, a growing body of
research in cognitive science and education is warning that the decline of deep reading is taking a hidden toll on young people’s
intellectual and emotional development.
B. It allows readers to experience the lives and feelings of characters.
C. It provides readers with more information about different cultures.
D. It helps readers improve their communication skills with others.
35. What is the author's attitude towards deep reading
According to a 2025 study by the American Psychological Association, the average attention span of teenagers has dropped
from 12 seconds in 2010 to just 8 seconds in 2025, shorter than that of a goldfish. Researchers link this decline directly to the rise
of “skimming culture”, where people scan digital content for keywords instead of reading carefully. While skimming is a useful
skill for processing large amounts of information quickly, it cannot replace the cognitive benefits of deep reading.
Deep reading, unlike skimming, requires sustained focus and critical thinking. When we read a long, complex text, our
brains are forced to make connections between ideas, follow logical arguments, and imagine scenarios described in the text. This
process strengthens the brain’s prefrontal cortex, the area responsible for decision-making, problem-solving, and emotional
regulation. A 2024 study from Stanford University found that students who engaged in regular deep reading scored 23% higher on
critical thinking tests than those who only read short digital content.

Beyond cognitive benefits, deep reading also plays a vital role in developing empathy. When we read literary fiction, we
step into the shoes of characters from different backgrounds, experience their emotions, and see the world through their eyes. This
practice helps young people understand and relate to others, a skill that is increasingly important in an increasingly divided world.
Critics of deep reading often argue that it is inefficient in the digital age, where information is abundant and time is limited.
But this argument misses the point: deep reading is not just about absorbing information, but about building the cognitive and
emotional capacity to understand, analyze, and care about the world around us. As Maryanne Wolf, a leading cognitive
neuroscientist, once said: “We read not only to know what others have experienced, but to become the kind of people who can

I hurried into Lehman’s grocery store. I was there to buy my grandmother’s hearing aid batteries. More importantly, this
was my chance to visit the love of my life — Artie.
I ran to the shelf he was on, and there he was, right where I last saw him: a grey little guy with a large mouth that fit
perfectly over my shoulder as I hugged him tightly. I adored that stuffed dolphin. As I held Artie, Mrs. Lehman, who had always
been kind to me, passed by and smiled knowingly, “Hugging that dolphin again, huh ”
But my brother, Rick, noticed I took a long time in Lehman’s, saying, “You are a thirteen-year-old girl now. You are
supposed to be quicker. Next time, I will go with you.” Oh, great! My brother, Rick. He always laughed at me.
But I wouldn’t give up. So, as we walked into the store, I suggested to Rick that he get the batteries, since he was older.
Then I headed towards Artie. There he was, awaiting me. I grabbed him and hugged him tightly. Just then, I heard Rick saying,

What in the world are you doing ”
This is Artie,” I said. “I hug him every single time I come here. I can’t afford it so I hope he doesn’t get sold because I

just love this little guy.” The look on Rick’s face was unreadable, but I knew deep down that he wasn’t going to make fun of me.
In fact, a few times when he accompanied me to Lehman’s, he said, “go on and hug your dolphin, if it’s still there.”
One day, Rick was not home, so I went to Lehman’s alone. I went straight to Artie’s shelf. But he was gone. I searched
every shelf but couldn’t find him. Suddenly, a voice from the counter interrupted my search.
