thing will never really happen. 1.
Researchers did the study. They used ultrasonic microphones (超声波麦克风) to record the sounds of tomato
plants in boxes.
2. one group wasn’t watered for five days, another group had the stems(茎) cut off and
the third group was untouched. It turned out that the first two groups made sounds 30 to 50 times per hour at a

It’s always a good thing to have a hobby. For Miss Patty, a school bus driver in Erie County, her hobby of
knitting(编织) has made her really touch the community.
Miss Patty always wanted to do something with her spare time to help the students. After a conversation with
one of the students, things took a turn from knitting one hat to knitting more hats.
“The boy gets on the bus, and he goes ‘what are you doing ’ I said, ‘I’m making a hat.’ He said, ‘That would
be great having such a warm hat in icy winter.’ So I said, ‘What color would you like ’ That started everything,”
Miss Patty told the local newspaper.
Several years have passed since that day, and Miss Patty has already knitted 7,083 hats for students in her
spare time. Sometimes she will get the student’s favorite color before she begins the project.
What is more moving is that Miss Patty buys all the materials using her own money. Some people do give
her gift cards around the holidays to help, but she still puts out a lot of her own money.

After a 10-year project to count tuna and other large fish in the world’s oceans, scientists have made a very
surprising discovery: these fish are almost gone. Because of too much fishing, almost 90 percent of the worldwide
population of large fish—the ones we usually eat—has disappeared. If we don’t act, these animals will totally
disappear. That will influence every animal in the ocean.
The demand for fish is growing. Almost a billion people around the world get their protein(蛋白质) mostly
from fish. Doctors praise seafood for being low in fat. But what seems like a healthy choice for humans is causing
a disaster to our oceans. “People are consuming(消费) too much,” says Lance Morgan, a scientist at the Marine
Conservation Biology Institute.

初中英语专项技能实践(中考阅读)
A dish of tuna in restaurants costs more than just one animal’s life. When fish like tuna disappear from the
ecosystem(生态系统), the ocean’s food chain(链) breaks down. Animals such as sharks(鲨鱼), which normally
eat tuna, may die because they find no food.
The news may be scary, but taking action from now on can prevent harm that hasn’t happened yet. World
organizations are ordering countries to stop fishing too much. The Monterey Bay Aquarium gives seafood choices
to anyone hoping to keep healthy without destroying the environment.
“If you care about wildlife, first spend time and think about your own values and beliefs(信仰),” says Morgan.
“Then decide what you’re going to eat.” (2024 广东深圳中考改编)

A new and exciting invention now allows deaf people to see conversations in real time. Using AR glasses
and a smartphone, deaf and hearing-impaired(听障) people are also able to join in everyday conversations.
The AR glasses were developed by Dan Scarfe after he had dinner with his family. The man saw his hearing-
impaired grandfather sitting alone in silence while the rest of the family were talking excitedly. This reminded
(提醒) him of his grandfather who was always watching TV shows with subtitles(字幕). Because of this experi-
ence, he realized that he should do something to help.
Scarfe got to work with an AR glasses maker. Six months later, a new pair of AR glasses came out.
The glasses first receive the audio(音频) and send it to a connected smartphone. The phone then creates sub-
titles from that audio. With the help of software, these subtitles appear on the user’s glasses screen.
The company first tested the glasses in the UK. The UK was chosen as a testing ground because over 12
million adults in Britain have hearing loss. However, when the product goes worldwide, it could change the lives
of some 430 million people. This is about 5% of the world’s population and includes 70 million people with total
hearing loss.
This is a game changer for the deaf. Mark Atkinson, who is using the AR glasses, says, “As a deaf person, I
am blown away by this new technology. When I tried on the glasses for the first time, I was so amazed. Real-time
subtitles made me become part of the conversation as never before.” (2024 四川德阳中考改编)

I. 阅读理解 阅读下面短文,根据短文内容,从题中所给的 A、B、C、D 四个选项中,选出最佳答案。
A
What are you holding in your hand while you are taking the examination Right. A pen.
Though it is small, the pen has changed the history, improved the trade of countries, recorded events, carried
news, and done far more work for human beings than all other tools.
Progress without it would have been almost impossible. The invention of the wheels, the introduction of
steam engine(蒸汽机), the use of electricity, all these have changed the lives of millions of people, but the pen
has done more. It has taken away mountains, and it has prepared the way for all progress and development of
the society.
In the past the pen did all the work if you wanted to keep any writing for some time. The lawyers took up
their pens and wrote the law of the country from the days when papyrus(纸莎草纸) was first used. The most
famous letters in the world were written with a pen. It was with a pen that the greatest thinkers of all time wrote
down their thoughts.
The pen is very utilitarian. We cannot sign a bill or write a letter or buy a house without our pen. An agree-
ment is worthless till our name is written with a pen. The writers encourage the world with it. The students take
their examinations with it as well.
Our coming into the world is recorded with a pen. Before we have been at school, our name is written on
the name list with a pen. We cannot be married till we have signed. A pen records the important events in our life.
Let us remember that we hold in our hand the most powerful instrument which man owns. The pen is a magic
tool. Whenever you use it, enjoy it.
( )1. What is the writer trying to do in this text
A. Describe what a pen looks like. B. Introduce the history of the pen.
C. Show the importance of the pen. D. Advise people to prepare a new pen.
( )2. The underlined “mountains” in Para. 3 refers to “something to _____________”.
A. lower the students’ scores B. stop the social development
C. explain the use of electricity D. change the law of the country
( )3. The lawyers started to write the law of the country _____________.
A. when papyrus was first used B. after they took an important exam
C. before their thoughts were changed D. as soon as they recorded their names
( )4. The underlined “utilitarian” in the text means “_____________”.
A. cheap B. boring C. useful D. special
( )5. What is the best title for this text
A. A Powerful Tool B. An Important Law
C. A Valuable Record D. An Exciting Event

Fresh green grass. Hundreds of colorful wild flowers. Water running into little pools. Birds making their
homes in boxes. The 9, 500-square-metre Augustenborg Botanical Garden may look just like any other well-
organized park but there’s a difference. It lies on the roofs of industrial and office buildings in the city of Malmo
87
初中英语专项技能实践(中考阅读)
in Sweden.
Green roofs are not a new invention. And now they are getting popular again. The common roofs of a mo-
dern city have endless black surfaces with no life or water. Perhaps that’s why a garden on a roof becomes such
a perfect choice for more and more people.
Green roofs are not just pretty. They also help to moderate the city temperature. The high temperatures on
common roofs in the summer can make top floor flats uncomfortably hot. What is more, they play a part in mak-
ing the cities hotter than the countryside around them, causing the “urban heat-island effect (城市热岛效应)”.
On a green roof, however, with its plants and water, temperatures change only a little, as they do in a park. This
can greatly cut the costs of heating and cooling in the building below.
Also, a green roof takes in rain water, and protects the city drainage(排水) system. And small
animals and birds can make their homes on it. Thanks to this, the city may become part of nature, rather than
something completely separate from it.
While the cost of building such a roof can still be higher, it can be cheaper in the long term as a result of
energy savings. And wouldn’t it be wonderful to be able to walk out into a garden high above the city’s noise
and traffic, whether you’re at school or in an office or just at home in a ten-floor block
( )6. With the example of Augustenborg Botanical Garden, the writer wants to explain _____________.
A. what a green roof is like B. how wildlife is protected
C. how to organize a good park D. what to do with a spare roof
( )7. The underlined “moderate” in Para. 3 is the closest in meaning to “_____________”.
A. raise B. check C. record D. control
( )8. Which of the following is the best sentence to fill in the blank in Para. 4
A. A green roof is alive. B. A common roof is noisy.
C. A green roof stops pollution. D. A common roof increases the cost.
( )9. According to the text, which isn’t the advantage of a green roof
A. Temperatures change a little on it. B. It makes the city become part of nature.
C. The cost of building it is still higher.
D. It cuts the costs of heating and cooling in the building below.
( )10. The purpose of the text is to _____________.
A. introduce the change of green roofs B. describe the advantages of green roofs
C. discover the problems with green roofs D. show the amazing beauty of green roofs
