A
I ran into the forest to my favorite place and sat down on my special rock. I knew no one could find me. At
last I had peace and quiet. I lifted my guitar and began to play.
“Hi, Desha!”
Shocked, I found my brother James standing behind me.
“Don’t you have a basketball game to watch ” I complained(抱怨).
“The game was almost over when I noticed you left. I thought you might like some company(陪伴).”
“Company is the last thing I want. Can’t I have a little peace and quiet ”
James studied me for a minute and said, “It’s hard having such a big family, isn’t it ”
“Eliza’s always prying into my personal life. Yesterday I found her looking through my diary. Now every-
one is in the living room watching the game. All I wanted to do was to watch a movie. But when I went to my
room, Sara was there listening to the radio. I just want to be alone for a change.”
James sighed(叹气) and said, “I left the same way when I was your age. But now...”
“Now you have your own room. After Daniel went off to college, you didn’t have to share anymore.”
James smiled, “It is great to have my own room, but sometimes I really miss Daniel. We used to talk about
everything—sports, school, friends... Although sometimes it seemed crowded, it was comforting to have some-
one else there.”
“Yeah, ‘crowded’ is right,” I said.
“I know,” James said. “But there are some good things that come out of it—we share memories and jokes
no one else understands and we can support one another in face of difficulties.”
I sighed.
“Didn’t Sara stay up half the night with you last week helping you with your homework ” James asked.
I admitted(承认) unwillingly(不情愿地). “Yeah, sometimes she can be all right.”
“This place can be your ‘room’. Anytime you need peace and quiet, just come here,” James said, pointing
at a rock.
I was surprised to see James’ name there!
James smiled, “This is a great place for getting away.”
Leaning on my brother’s shoulder(肩膀), I thought, “Maybe family is not bad.”

B
People are talking a lot about artificial intelligence (AI), viewing it as a force that could reshape how society
works. But there is something important missing from this discussion. It isn’t enough to ask how it will change
us. We also need to understand how we shape AI and what it can tell us about ourselves.
Every AI model we develop mirrors(映照) our rules and expresses our beliefs(信仰). A few years ago, while
looking for new workers, a famous company gave up an AI-powered tool after finding it unfavorable(不利的) to
women. The AI was not designed to behave this way, instead, it was influenced by the historical data(数据) favor-
ing men. Similarly, a recent study found that lending algorithms (借贷算法) often offer less favorable terms to
colored people, worsening(恶化) long-standing unfairness in money-lending business. In both cases, AI isn’t
creating new biases(偏见), it is mirroring the ones that are already present.
These reflections(反映) give us an important chance to take a close look at ourselves. By making these pro-
blems seen and more pressing, AI challenges us to know and deal with what causes algorithmic bias, As AI con-
tinues to develop, we must ask ourselves how we as normal people want to shape its role in society. We should
not only improve AI models, but also make sure that AI is developed and used responsibly.
A number of companies are already taking action. They are judging(判断) the data, rules, and beliefs that
shape the behavior of AI models. Still, we cannot expect the companies to do all the work. As long as AI is trained
on human data, it will mirror human behavior. That means we have to think carefully about the footprints of our-
selves we leave in the world. I may value privacy(隐私), but if I give it up in a heartbeat to visit a website, the
algorithms may make a very different judgment of what I really want and what is good for me. If I want mean-
ingful human connections yet spend more time on social media and less time in the physical company of my
friends, I am indirectly training AI models about the true nature of humanity.
As AI becomes more powerful, we need to take increasing care to read our principles(原则) into the record
of our actions rather than allowing the two to diverge(分歧). Knowing this allows us to make better decisions, but
only when we are prepared to look closely and take responsibility for what we see. (2025 北京中考改编)
( )6. Why did the famous company give up the AI-powered tool for finding new workers
A. It was too expensive to use. B. It was designed to favor men.
C. It was unfavorable to women. D. It couldn’t work with historical data.
( )7. What do the examples of the AI tool and lending algorithms show
A. AI can create new biases. B. AI mirrors human behavior.
C. AI will replace humans in many fields. D. AI is better than humans in some tasks.
( )8. What chance do the reflections of AI give us
A. To stop developing AI models. B. To make AI more powerful.
C. To take a close look at ourselves. D. To let AI solve all social problems.
( )9. What should we do as AI continues to develop
A. Stop using AI because of its biases. B. Only ask companies to improve AI.
C. Let AI shape its own role in society. D. Improve AI models and use them responsibly.
( )10. Which of the following is the best title for this text
A. AI Isn’t the Problem; We Are B. AI: A Tool to Reshape Our Society

Are you afraid of going to the dentist If so, you’re not alone.
These fears could just be in our heads, however. According to a recent survey by Martin Tickle, a professor
at Manchester University in the UK, the pain isn’t felt most of the time in dental surgeries (牙科手术). In fact,
93
初中英语专项技能实践(中考阅读)
among the 451 interviewed patients, 75% reported no pain at all during their visits, including situations when
they had their teeth pulled out.
Could it be the sound of the drill(钻头) then
“I found that the sound of drilling can evoke deep worry in dental patients. Actually they don’t have any
pain,” Hiroyuki Karibe, a scientist at Nippon Dental University in Tokyo, told The Guardian.
To find the reason why a drill might bring on a racing heart, Karibe divided the volunteers into low-fear
and high-fear groups based on how much they feared a trip to the dentist. Volunteers were played the sound of
a drill while their brain activities were watched by a machine.
What Karibe found in the low-fear group was increased activity in the areas of the brain relative to auditory
(听觉) processing, which means, for these people, the sound of dental drills is no different from other sounds.
In the high-fear group, however, the brain area that was activated(激活) was different. It was the area that carries
out a number of duties, including learning, feelings and, most importantly, memory. This means that these volun-
teers not only heard the sound, but they remembered it—they made connections between the sound of a drill
and the worry it produced in the past, causing their worry to return.
Understanding how brains reply to the sounds of dentists’ drills could help scientists find ways to make
patients more relaxed, according to Karibe, because patients who worry about going to the dentist might keep
putting off their visits. But the best way is to keep your teeth healthy.
( )1. How does the writer explain that the pain isn’t felt most of the time in dental surgeries
A. By talking with many dentists. B. By showing facts with numbers.
C. By making a survey on the Internet. D. By working with a dentist for a year.

B. It was the same as other sounds to the volunteers in the low-fear group.
C. It made the brain area of the volunteers in the high-fear group stop working.
D. It made the volunteers in the low-fear group remember their past uncomfortable memories.
( )4. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. Some new ways to treat teeth. B. How the study might be useful.
C. How to make dental patients relaxed. D. The importance of keeping our teeth healthy.
( )5. What’s the purpose of the text
A. To introduce a recent research. B. To help us to keep our teeth healthy.

The silence of the pond was broken by the first cry, “Found something!” A swimmer ducked(扎入) into the
water with a lifeline connected to a boat. Soon, she appeared, holding a bright blue glass bottle. It was passed to
another, then into the boat.
On a fine Sunday morning in May, a team of 10 women over 65 years old, known as the Old Women Against
Underwater Rubbish (OWAUR), looked for rubbish across Nova Pond in Scotia.
When the team returned, they joked about the trip. “We didn’t even know what it was,” one swimmer said
with a laugh, showing an electronic lighter they had found. “We had to ask a young person.”
Part protection organization, part social club, OWAUR only accepted old women as its members. To improve
the conditions of the ponds, the group made it its mission to take rubbish away from them. The idea of this group
was from a moment(朋友圈) of Sandy, a retired(退休的) reporter. As a lifelong nature lover, she liked swimming
in ponds. However, the water of the pond, which was a little polluted, made her anxious. Then she came up with
a slogan(口号): “OVER 65, IF YOU’RE HEALTHY ENOUGH, IS THE AGE OF ACTION.”
Soon many people joined her. They found a sense of wonder at the pond cleanup moments. And their team
could do a lot more than people might think.
When many people thanked OWAUR for what they had done, some questioned why they called themselves
“old women”. “You should call yourselves the Mermaids(美人鱼) Against Underwater Rubbish,” they said.

Taihu Tunnel, 10.79 kilometers long and 43.6 meters wide, has been the longest underwater tunnel in China.
It stands out as one of the “2022 China’s Top 100 Buildings in the New Era(时代)”.
When building Taihu Tunnel, the project team faced many challenges(挑战), such as high safety risks and
time limit. To deal with them, they made workable plans. They divided the tunnel construction into 19 parts. The
construction of each part mainly took four steps.
Step 1 Remove. The team built a cofferdam to remove water from the area, so the workers could go inside
and do their work in dry conditions.
95
初中英语专项技能实践(中考阅读)
Step 2 Clear. The team dug deep into the lake bed, and cleared the soil and stones out in order to make
space for the next step.
Step 3 Build. The team built the floor, walls and roof of the tunnel in this step. They used high-quality
building materials to waterproof(防水) the tunnel.
Step 4 Backfill. The team put the soil and stones back. Then this part of the tunnel was buried(埋) deep
down the lake bed.
The construction of the 19 parts was streamlined(流水线的). The project team used a new method. The work
group of each step moved to the next part and repeated their work after they finished the work in the previous
(之前的) part. Different work groups co-operated(合作) well with each other. From part to part, the construction
started from the opposite ends, and got connected somewhere in the middle. The construction took about four
years to complete, shorter than people had expected.
The drivers’ safety is fully considered in Taihu Tunnel. There are 200,000 LED lights on the ceiling of the
tunnel. They show colorful pictures of blue sky, starry night and so on. The pictures can help drivers fight tired-
ness and travel through the tunnel safely. Besides, there are two systems in the tunnel. The police can check the
traffic situation through a monitoring(监控的) system. If traffic accidents happen, the police can give instructions
and warn drivers in the tunnel over an audio(声音的) system to prevent further accidents.

Do you speak a dialect(方言) in daily life While many Chinese people speak putonghua, some local dialects
are in danger of disappearing. To save them, the Chinese government started the Chinese Language Resources
Protection Project a few years ago.
This project looks at how people talk in 1,712 places. Their languages include 103 dialects that are almost
gone. It has helped China to build the largest language resource library in the world. There’s an online library
where people can learn dialects from over 5.6 million audio clips (音频剪辑) and over 5 million videos.
_________________ According to Harold Palmer, a world expert on language, “dialects are a key to store local
cultures. Language clearly shows the history and beliefs(信仰) of an area,” he said.
Scholar(学者) Zhang Hongming talked about his concerns(担忧) about the disappearing of dialects. “For
about over 10 years, in the Wu dialect areas such as Shanghai and Suzhou, children aged 6 to 15 can understand
but hardly speak the dialect. Young people above 15 years old sometimes speak it, but not very well. If this keeps
happening, the dialect might disappear,” he said.
So how did China make this big library “A big national effort has been put into the project to make it hap-
pen,” said Cao Zhiyun, an expert on the project. “Over five years, more than 350 universities and research groups
joined in, along with over 4,500 experts and more than 6,000 dialect speakers.”
The project is now entering into its second part. This includes creating digital tools like apps and mobile
dictionaries to help people learn dialects. (2024 贵州中考改编)

On average(平均), firefighters get a fire call every 24 second s in the US. Every 87 seconds, a home fire
happens. Just between January 1st, 2019 and January 1st, 2024, there were 11,180 home fire deaths in the coun-
try. But the best escape time for a fire is just three minutes or less. So everyone should pay attention to fire safety
at home.
To avoid starting a fire, we must know common causes. Cooking tools are the number one cause of home
fires. Be especially careful when using them. Never leave the kitchen while cooking and make sure the tools are
completely off after cooking. Electrical appliances(电器) can lead to a fire, so check them often to make sure they
are working properly. Smoking is another common cause of house fires. It’s never a good idea to smoke indoors,
so take a few steps to go out. Last, don’t forget little kids. They usually find fire exciting and think of fire as a
toy. So keep them away from fire and teach them about dangers of fire.
How can we prevent home fires The following tips may help.
Get smoke alarms
The first step is to install(安装) enough smoke alarms through your home. Get one in every room.
Prepare fire extinguishers (灭火器)
Keep fire extinguishers available(可获得的) at home. They can put out small fires. Check them often to
make sure they work properly.
Create a plan for escape
A good plan should start with two escape ways from every room. Then know how fast your family can run,
tell kids when and how to get out, and make a house map with all doors and windows. At last, choose a meeting
place outside. And don’t forget to practice it often with every family member.
You might think that these fire safety tips are common sense. However, it is difficult to think of them espe-
cially when you are in a life-and-death moment. Take action with the tips and never take fire safety lightly at home.

Podareva, 28, was born in the hometown of Russia’s famous poet Sergei Yesenin. She has loved poetry since
her childhood. Growing up, she wrote many poems in both Russian and English. After she came to China to study
Chinese in 2013, the world of Chinese poetry opened up before her.
Podareva has had colorful experiences in China in the past ten years. She has won prizes in many Chinese
poetry writing competitions and published(出版) her own Chinese poetry collections. Her most unforgettable
memory is that one of her Chinese poems written in 2020 was turned into a song. And even better, she sang it
herself.
“Some people may praise China in a direct way, but I prefer to express my feelings about the country and
describe the friendship between China and Russia through different styles of poems,” Podareva says.
Podareva has always wanted to be a cultural ambassador(使者) between the two countries. In 2020, she
began to make videos and shared them online. Besides sharing Chinese poems she had written, Podareva also
produced videos about cultural differences between China and Russia. Sometimes she made funny videos to
explain the misunderstandings that Chinese people have towards Russians.
Besides writing poetry, Podareva has also been painting. She doesn’t think the two art forms are different
from each other. “Wang Wei was a famous Chinese poet, and he was also a painter,” she says. In December 2022,
Podareva held an exhibition in Shanghai with 66 of her paintings on show.
