Rain was loudly hitting my window when I woke up. Holidays are my only 1 to sleep in, but I couldn’t
because of the sound of the rain. My brain was 2 and full of ideas, so I decided to get up and finish my
project.
I went to a coffee shop and started taking notes on 3 was happening around me. When I looked at the

her husband out of the car. Then they 5 the shop hand in hand.

teenagers. The young man who was driving it had turned 7 the music so high that I could hear it even in
the coffee shop.
However, they were not bad guys. They were just 8 the music.
A lot of memories came into my mind. I could not stop 9 the people who have been by my side since
I was young.
In the real world, everyone is different. But whether friends or enemies, we’re all still part of the 10

them before judging them (2023 四川眉山中考改编)

III. 阅读理解 阅读下面短文,将方框里 A-E 五个句子分别填入文中空缺处,使内容完整、正确。
Think about how much time you spent outside last week. Really “outside”. Walking from the car into the
mall(商场) doesn’t count.
1.______________________ You may say, “I play inside more than outside and I like to play games on the
computer.”
If so, it’s likely that you spent more time inside four walls than outside in fresh air. Kids today spend two
fewer hours per week on sports and outdoor activities than kids did 20 years ago. That’s according to a Univer-
sity of Michigan study. 2._______________________ The costs “include overweight, greater stress, higher rates
of physical and emotional illness and less joy…,” says Richard Louv, writer of Last Child in the Woods: Saving
Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder (自然缺失症).
Play is important, even for adults. Just getting outdoors does wonders.
3.______________________ The next time you sit down to message your friends, take note of your senses
during and after your texting, then do the same experiment after you’ve done something outside. You will find
being outdoors brings the senses to life. “Hiking, exploring, and fishing help improve all of your senses,” says
Betsy Keller. She’s a professor of exercise and sports sciences at Ithaca College in New York. “Smell, sight(视
觉)... all of your senses are in use when you’re outside.”
4.______________________ Are you stressed out Having trouble devoting(投入) your mind to what you
are doing Too much time indoors—away from the natural world—may be a cause. Louv uses a term to describe
the set of problems caused by too much time indoors: nature deficit disorder. He says, “I use it to describe the
price we pay for being so separated from nature.”
5.______________________ When you’re out, breathe in fresh air, hear the leaves crackle(噼啪声) under-
foot and search cool birds and plants in the woods. It can help you feel more connected to the natural world. No
woods nearby Nature can be found right outside your back door or in your local park.
So the next time you sit down to spend quality time with a video game, consider treating yourself to a little
outdoor play instead. (2024 江苏扬州中考改编)
A. Outdoor play frees your mind.
B. Outdoor activity betters your senses.
C. Non-moving activities are more popular.
D. Spending time outdoors brings you closer to the environment.
E. Now think about how much time you spent indoors—on the Internet or playing
video games or watching TV.

Some animals can easily find their way home after a long journey. How do they make it Scientific research
shows that they are born with certain unusual abilities for direction.
A certain kind of ants, for example, can count their steps to avoid getting lost. They can go as far as 110
meters and bring food home. These ants live in the open desert, so they have nothing to guide them along the
way. It’s like someone walking six kilometers through a dark forest.
Some fish have an unbelievable sense of smell. They can smell even a single drop of their home water in
a large sea area. Some sea birds have a similar ability. They are able to make a smell map of their flying area.
Some animals can sense the earth’s magnetic field (磁场), while humans can’t. This magnetic field guides
a certain kind of fish when they swim a long way to a place and then back. How can this kind of fish do that It
is still a mystery. Scientists have no good answers yet.
However, animals with such unusual abilities still have difficulty dealing with environmental changes caused
by human activities. For example, many birds depend on stars for direction, but they get lost easily at night when
city lights are kept on all night. To solve this problem, we can simply turn off some lights at night. Clearly, one
small act of humans may mean a lot to animals. (2023 广东中考改编)

A Long March 5 rocket took off from the Wenchang Space Launch Site in Hainan province on May 3rd, 2024.
After flying for about 37 minutes, it successfully placed the Chang’e 6 robotic lunar probe into an earth-moon
transfer trajectory (转移轨道). Several days later the probe was programmed to land on the moon’s far side and
started its tasks, which would last about 53 days.
This is the world’s first try to bring samples(样本) from the moon’s far side. For China, it’s the second sam-
ple-return moon journey. Chang’e 5 successfully brought samples from the moon in the winter of 2020. Up to
now, 10 moon sample-return tasks have been carried out by the United States, the former Soviet Union and China,

but all these samples were collected from the moon’s near side.
The moon’s far side has always been a subject of scientific wonder because of its many mysteries. It’s facing
away from Earth and it can never be seen from Earth. It was once called the “dark side of the moon” even though
it receives just as much sunlight as the near side.
Chinese researchers have found that the soil on the far side is much thicker than that on the near side, but
they haven’t found out the reason. Samples brought back by Chang’e 5 have helped scientists find that there were
volcanic(火山的) activities on the near side around 2 billion years ago. Some scientists thought maybe volcanoes
became inactive on the far side about 4 billion years ago. Is it true Samples from the far side will allow them to
know the answer.
“Comparing the make-up of the far side samples from Chang’e 6 with those collected from the near side
will be of great scientific value to the international community,” said Martin Sweeting, a famous professor of
space engineering. (2024 山东烟台中考改编)

When we think of art, we probably think of painting a picture on a strong cloth or special paper, even on
walls of a city. However, in many cultures people paint their faces instead.
①_________________
In fact, face painting may be the very first form of art. Painting faces are in different colors and patterns(图
案). This has been part of people’s traditions for thousands of years. The way that people painted their faces can
tell stories and lessons from the past.
②_________________
People still paint their faces for lots of reasons. Patterns on faces connect people to a tribal(部落的) family
and can show who is the most important person in the family. For fighters, it is a way to make their enemies

How is face paint important in theater
Face paint was important in Japanese and Chinese ancient ceremonies. It was also used in traditional theatre
to change the actors’ roles. Actors in those countries still wear white, black and red face paint today to show feel-
ings and make the bad people look dramatic(戏剧性的) and awful.

Tribal people make face paint from the natural colors in plants and earth. Plant parts are used to make dif-

Trees in cities “live fast but die young” compared to forests in the countryside, warns a new study.
Researchers found that trees in cities die younger than those in the countryside because of the higher levels
of CO2. City-living trees suffer(遭受) a loss of carbon storage(储存). That means trees produce less energy from
the air.
107
初中英语专项技能实践(中考阅读)
Now researchers say more must be done to deal with the situation. Ian Smith, a PhD student of Boston Uni-
versity in the United States, said, “Cities are in the important position in fighting against rising temperatures and
increasing CO2. We find that tree planting alone may not be enough to keep and increase city canopy cover (树
冠覆盖率). Because of the age and size of the present canopy, efforts to improve and protect tree health are badly
needed for increasing city tree cover and canopy cover.”
The research team used a model to watch changes among street trees for several planting and management
methods. Researchers also used the model to watch tree growth, death and planting rates(率) both among trees
in Boston city and forests in the countryside in Massachusetts.
It was discovered that rates of carbon cycling and growth rates among city trees were nearly four times fast-
er than those in the countryside. However, loss of carbon storage and death rates are also higher, especially death
rates are more than double higher than those in countryside forests.
The study, published in PLOS ONE, has reminded(提醒) scientists to encourage communities to do more
to plant and protect trees. It is important to increase city canopy cover and carbon storage.
Researchers say planting and protecting will be needed to make sure cities can develop healthily, but more
needs to be done to have a better understanding of city trees—which may be different from countryside forests.
( )6. According to the text, which is/are in the important position in fighting against increasing CO2
A. Cities. B. Countryside. C. Communities. D. Canopy cover.
( )7. Para. 4 mainly tells us ____________.

C. the discoveries from the researchers D. the suggestions from the researchers
( )8. What does “those” in Para. 5 refer to
A. Death rates. B. Growth rates.
C. Loss of carbon storage. D. Rates of carbon cycling.
( )9. What can we know from the text
A. If we plant enough trees, we are sure to increase city canopy cover.
B. The growth rates of city trees were slower than those in the countryside.
C. The higher the levels of CO2 are, the harder it will be for the plants to live on.
D. The more carbon storage loses, the more energy the trees produce from the air.
( )10. The writer’s main purpose of writing the text is ____________.
A. to let us have a better understanding of city trees
B. to teach us how to improve and protect tree health
C. to warn us that trees in cities live fast but die young
