Schools help protect kids' mental(心理的) health in many ways. Some states in the US let kids take mental health days. Should schools offer mental health days Here's what some students have to say.
Bibi Tooren, 11
Schools should give kids days off for mental health, because mental health is an important part of overall(整体的) health. If you don't feel well, it will have a big influence on your ability to focus. Kids get stressed with long school days. Plus, kids don't have much experience dealing with mental health crises(危机).
Nugg Canales, 8
Kids should get mental health days off from school. Sometimes, we need to stay at home and play games to calm our minds. Some schools don't allow music, and I need soft music to make me feel good about myself and the world. If you take a mental health day, you should not make up work because it adds stress to your life.
Hailey Young, 12
The weekend was created to give us time off, and we children need to learn to better manage our time. We hardly get our schoolwork done in the five school days we get. Plus, schools would need students to make up mental health days. They would probably do so during our real breaks: in summer vacation or winter vacation. Another thing is that, for some kids, school might be safe.
Johnny Gabel, 9
I don't think schools should give students days off for their mental health. Having too many days off can have a bad influence on grades. And many students' parents have to go to work. If students get too many days off, they might get left home too much. This could make some students' mental health problems worse.

In Britain you may often hear “Drop in any time” or “Come to see me soon”, but you can't really do that. People just say those things to make you feel welcome. It is better to telephone before visiting someone at home. If you receive a written invitation to an event that says “RSVP”, you should reply to let the person who sent the invitation know whether or not you plan to go.
You should never accept an invitation unless you really plan to go. You may refuse by saying, “Thank you for inviting me, but I will not be able to come.” If, after accepting, you are unable to go, be sure to tell those who are expecting you as soon as possible that you will not be there.
Though it is not necessarily expected that you give a gift to your host, it is considered polite to do so, especially if you have been invited for a meal. Flowers, chocolate, or a small gift are all appropriate(合适的). A thank you note or telephone call after the visit is also considered polite and is an appropriate way to express your appreciation for the invitation.
4. What can you do when a British friend says, “Drop in any time”?
A. Visit him or her at any time. B. Say no time to him or her seriously.
C. Visit him or her soon. D. Telephone him or her before visiting.

The brush pen, one of the “Four Treasures of the Study”, was invented thousands of years ago. However, the oldest pen was just a stick or a piece of bamboo. It was difficult for people to write well on thin silk.
It is said that Meng Tian, a general of the Qin Kingdom, improved the pen. When Meng was leading an army to fight against the Chu Kingdom, he had to report the situation to his king in time. But his pen was too hard and caused him much trouble, so he was always thinking about the ways to improve it.
One day after hunting, Meng made his way home with some wild rabbits on the horseback. Fat and heavy, one rabbit's tail left a long trail(痕迹) on the ground when they moved on. Suddenly a good idea came to his mind, “If I tie the rabbit's hair to a stick, would it be easy to write with?”
On arriving home, he tied the rabbit's hair to a stick and tried writing with it. But the rabbit's hair was too smooth to write well and this made him waste a lot of silk. Meng was so frustrated that he threw away his “invention” into a stone hole in the yard.
However, Meng never gave up and kept trying all the time. A few rainy days later, he happened to find his “invention” fatter in the stone hole. He picked it up with hope. The brush pen worked beautifully on silk. It turned out that the special water in the hole had cleaned the oil from the hair. Meng succeeded at last.
Thanks to Meng, the brush pen is playing a key role in Chinese culture. Today, students are taught to use brush pens in school. It makes their life more colourful and helps them better understand Chinese culture.
8. Why did Meng Tian want to improve the pen
A. Because his king asked him to do so.
B. Because he wanted to be an inventor.
C. Because he didn't have silk to write on.
D. Because the pen brought him much trouble.
9. When did Meng think of the good idea according to Paragraph 3
A. Before hunting animals. B. When seeing the trail.
C. During cleaning the hair. D. After writing a report.

When Oliver arrived in this hard world, he wasn't sure if he would live through the first three minutes. He lay on a hard little bed and tried his best to start breathing(呼吸).
Oliver fought his first battle without much help from the two people present at his birth. One was an old woman, who was nearly always drunk, and the other was a busy local doctor, who was not paid enough to be very interested in Oliver's survival.
However, Oliver managed to draw his first breath, and then announced his arrival by crying loudly. His mother raised her pale young face and whispered, “Let me see it.”
The doctor turned away from the fire, where he had been warming his hands. He gave her the child. Lovingly, she kissed the baby with her cold white lips, then stared wildly around the room, fell back—and died.
The doctor began to put on his coat. “The mother was a good looking girl. Where did she come from?” “She was brought here last night,” replied the old woman. “She was found lying in the street. Where she came from, or what her name was, nobody knows.”
The doctor lifted the girl's left hand. “The old story,” he shook his head. “No wedding(婚礼) ring, I see. Ah! Good night.”
And so Oliver was left with only the drunken nurse. He was then sent to a special “baby farm” nearby. There, he and thirty other children rolled(翻滚) around the floor all day, without_the_inconvenience_of_too_much_food_or__too_much_clothing. Mrs Mann, who “looked after” them, was very experienced. She knew what was good for children. She also knew what was good for herself, so she kept the money that she was given for the children's food for her own use. The board(董事会) which was responsible(负责的) for the orphans(孤儿) sometimes checked on the health of the children, but they always sent Mr Bumble, a kind local policeman, to announce their visit the day before. So whenever the board arrived, of course, the children were always tidy and clean.
On Oliver's ninth birthday, Mr Bumble came to see Mrs Mann. Through the front window, Mrs Mann saw him at the gate, and turned quickly to the girl who worked with her.
“Quick! Take Oliver and those others upstairs to be washed!” she said. Then she ran out to open the gate which was always kept locked.

A different culture keeps my eyes and mind open. When I stayed in Russia as an exchange student, I learned about it.
One day, a Russian friend invited me to a well known restaurant in Moscow(莫斯科). I looked forward to trying local food. After arriving there, I found nothing on the table but several small plates. There were some nuts, a few slices of tomatoes and several pieces of onions. Although the dishes were simple, we drank a lot and I felt the passion(热情) from the bottom of his heart. In China, when we invite friends or relatives, we always treat them to a big dinner. We buy as much food as we can to show our friendliness to others.
What a different culture it is! Even though we try our best, it's very difficult to get used to their customs.
Another Russian custom(风俗) also impresses me deeply. As we know, it is very cold in winter there. When winter comes, Russians love to swim. They even take their kids outside together. Like their parents, Russian kids rub(擦) their bodies with snow before jumping into the water. Although the water is freezing cold, they all play happily in it.
What fun it is to know about a different culture!
