Every day at Misselthwaite Manor was the same. Mary woke up in her room while Martha made the fire. After breakfast, she would go outside and run around the gardens. She didn't like the strong wind from there, but the fresh air made her feel comfortable.
There were no toys in her room or the garden, so Mary often walked around and observed things around her. Sometimes she saw Ben Weatherstaff working, but he always seemed too busy and often looked angry.
Her favorite walk was the long path outside the walled gardens. The walls were covered with thick ivy(常春藤) but there was one part where the ivy was much thicker.
One morning, Mary saw Ben's robin sitting on the wall. She felt happy to see the bird again. It chirped(唧唧叫) and whistled, almost as if it knew her.
“It's me, Mary!” she called out. “I like you!”
The bird flew to the top of a tree and sang loudly. Mary thought it had come from the secret garden.
That evening, she asked Martha about the locked garden. “Why does Mr Craven hate it so much?”
“It was Mrs Craven's garden,” Martha explained. “She made it after their wedding. She died there when a tree branch she was sitting on broke and struck her. That's why Mr Craven can't bear the garden any more.”
Later, as Mary sat by the fire listening to the wind, she heard another sound like a child crying. “Do you hear that?” she asked Martha.
Martha looked troubled. “It's just the wind,” she insisted(坚持认为).
When a sudden breeze(微风) blew the door open, the sound became clearer. “There! Someone's crying,” Mary insisted.
Martha quickly closed the door. “It's only the wind,” she said firmly(坚决地).
But Mary didn't believe her.
