Read the sentences from the reading passage and summarise the grammar rules.

Research shows that they are a completely new species.
Scientists used to believe that ants came from the northern half of the earth.
Read more sentences and find the grammar rules.
They also help us understand that life on earth has always changed.
But the find proves that it did 35 million years ago.
当谓语动词表示肯定概念,其后面的句子一般用that引导。that没有实际意义,只起语法作用,多数情况下that可以省略。
e.g. I hope (that) it will snow this winter.
我希望今年冬天会下雪。
I believe (that) we shall become good friends.
我相信我们会成为好朋友。
Betty thinks (that) trees can improve the air.
Betty认为数目可以改善空气质量。
常接that引导的宾语从句的动词有:believe, expect, explain, feel, hear, hope, imagine, prefer, promise, report, say, see, tell, think, understand, warn, wish等
并非所有的动词后面都可接that引导的宾语从句。
In the future, amber may also help us discover if other species have changed over time.
Who knows whether this piece of amber will tell us more secrets
Read more sentences and find the grammar rules.
如果我们要表达不确定的概念时,从句就要用whether或if来引导。它们在从句中不充当句子成分,但有含义,意为“是否”,故不可省略。
e.g. Tom wants to know whether /if he needs to come early tomorrow. Tom想知道他明天是否需要早来。
He asks whether / if we will go fishing on Sunday.
他问我们星期天是否会去钓鱼。
一般疑问句用作句子宾语时,也用连词whether或if引导。此时,原来的疑问语序需改为陈述语序。
Will Jenny go to Beijing tomorrow I don’t know.
→I don’t know if / whether Jenny will go to Beijing tomorrow.
Is the old man a doctor Sally asks Tom.
→Sally asks Tom if / whether the old man is a doctor.
Read more sentences and find the grammar rules.
主语在谓语的前面
两个引导词whether和if如何选择呢?
宾语从句中没有or not的情况下,一般来说二者都可用;
从句中有or not的话,一般用whether,构成whether… or not…结构。
e.g. Do you know if / whether Lucy will take part in the sports meet
Do you know whether or not Lucy will take part in the sports meet
He does not know whether they will plant trees on Saturday or not.
Connect the sentences with that, if or whether.
1. Is there life in outer space Scientists aren’t sure.
2. “I want to be a scientist and study plants,” John told his parents.
3. Is Ms Brown interested in insects or birds Emily wants to know.
Scientists aren’t sure if / whether there is life in outer space.
John told his parents that he wanted to be a scientist and study plants.
Emily wants to know if / whether Mr Brown is interested in insects or birds.
当主句是过去时态时,从句用相应的过去时态
Connect the messages with that, if or whether.
