The idea of a bike came from a child’s toy, a horse made of wood. The horse had a horse’s head on one end of a stick and a wheel on the other.
In 1790, Frenchman Sibrac made the world’s first bicycle and became the founder of bicycles. The first bicycle was made of wood and had no handles (把手). It could not control the direction, just move forward in a straight line. It had no pedals (踏板), either. People made them go by pushing the ground with both feet. It looked like a wooden toy Trojan horse (特洛伊木马).
Then there were many funny-looking bicycles. Bikes had the handle, and it was easier to turn or move in different directions. After that, bicycles had a large front wheel. People believed the large wheel would make the bike go faster.
