Gael and Miguel were two boys of the same age living in a small town. They always played together and
shared a dream—to become brave firefighters when they grew up.
They spent their days pretending (假装) to be firefighters, and saving their toys from make-believe fires when
they were only six years old. In addition, they visited the local fire station every weekend. They excitedly watched
the firefighting exercise. Chief Ron, who led the station, noticed their interest and started inviting them to join in
simple exercises. He also taught them important safety rules.
This made their dreams even stronger. They practiced copying what they had learned over and over again.
They even built a small fire station at home by using cardboard boxes.
One day, Chief Ron showed them the communication room. They learned how firefighters talk during
emergencies (紧急事件). They practiced the communication process at home. They kept practicing and dreaming,

Fish often travel in groups. Later, they change the shape of the group together. Is there a director among them
第 7页/共 16页
No! Each fish finds the right direction on its own. Scientists have long wondered why this situation is so common.
Now some researchers think they have an idea: It saves the fish energy.
Thousands of fish can swim together, sometimes they move slowly and beautifully. Other times, they will rush
quickly in one direction and then another.
A new study has compared the energy a fish uses as it swims. “Moving in a group reduces the energy a fish
uses by more than half,” says George Lauder, a fish researcher at Harvard University. He even worked with giant
danio (巨型斑马鱼) —a kind of small fish. They love to swim in groups. Sometimes he put eight at a time into a
water box shaped like a racetrack (跑道). Other times, he just put in a single fish. The danio didn’t swim around the
box like race cars. Instead, they swam in one area, like a runner on a treadmill (跑步机). When they “ran”, a motor
pushed the box’s water around. This created a current (水流).
As the fish swam, a special instrument checked how much O2 they used. As we all know, people who run a
short distance very fast use a lot of O2. They usually need some time to get well again. Here, the researchers used
O2 as a standard of how much energy the fish used to swim. To make them swim fast, the researchers increased the
speed of the water current. When they slowed the water down, the fish slowed down, too.
Fish groups used less O2 than when they swam alone. And they took less time to get well again. In other words,
they could catch their breath after travelling in groups more easily. By travelling in groups, fish can save their
energy for other important things. For example, if fish are young, they can put that energy into growth. As adults,
they can use it to produce young or to avoid killers.
63. What does the underlined word “It” in Paragraph 1 refer to
A. Changing the direction of the group. B. Swimming in groups in water.
C. Finding the right group themselves. D. Moving slowly and beautifully.
64. How did the danio swim in the box
A. Around the box like race cars. B. With their shapes changing.
C. Forward and backward all the time. D. Against the current in one place.
65. What’s the correct order of George Lauder’s experiment
a. The current appeared because the box’s water was pushed around.
b. How much O the danio had used was found out.
c. The danio were put into a racetrack-shaped water box.
d. The danio changed their speed according to the speed of the water current.
A. c-a-d-b B. a-c-b-d C. c-b-a-d D. a-c-d-b
第 8页/共 16页
66. What can we know about the fish according to the study
A. They only travel in groups in one direction.
B. They can’t catch their breath if they swim alone.
C. They can drive away killers when swimming alone.
D. They can save energy to produce young.
67. What does the passage mainly talk about
A. How fish often travel in water. B. What fish use their energy to do.
C. Why fish often travel in groups. D. Whether human can learn from fish.
D
On weekdays, parks are often the first choice for the elderly and families with children. But recently, parks
have become a good place for many young people to relax. This new way of relaxation has been called the “20
minutes for parks” online.
The popularity of the “20 minutes for parks” began in the spring of 2024. The International Journal of
Environmental Health Research has found that staying outdoors for a short time every day can make people feel
happier. Even if they don’t exercise, just staying in the park for 20 minutes every day can make them feel better.
Why are parks so popular One reason is that people can get pleasure for free. Relaxing in free parks is
probably more popular than traveling. Another reason is the lower cost of time. For office workers, the lunch break
during the working day is very important, and it is difficult to take a long time to travel far. The parks help them
save a lot of time.
For teenagers, it’s common to have stress, and what is important is to look for a way to deal with it. Try to
hang out in the parks after school or at lunchtime, and you may like this way.
Xiaoming, 14, is one of the beneficiaries (受益者). He says, “In the park, I can think of some life truths. When
I walk along the river, I suddenly realize that the river has been here for hundreds of years or thousands of years.
The river seems to be very tranquil, but it is changing all the time because of the wind. My life is really like the
river.”
Meimei is another one. She used to relax by playing with her friends. Now, after school or at lunchtime, she
likes to go to the parks such as the Taiyuan Forest Park. She says, “When I stand on the bridge and watch the fish
swimming in the lake, I’ll forget the stress of exams and growth problems.”
68. What is the “20 minutes for parks”
A. A way of relaxation. B. A healthy program.
第 9页/共 16页
C. An expression online. D. A kind of park in cities.
69. Why are parks so popular at present

B. Because fewer people want to spend money.
C. Because people have less time to take exercise.
D. Because all the people like things for free.
70. What does the underlined word “tranquil” in Paragraph 5 mean
A. Clean. B. Wide. C. Peaceful. D. Beautiful.
71. How does the writer show the benefits of visiting parks in the last three paragraphs
A. By asking questions. B. By listing numbers.
C. By expressing ideas. D. By giving examples.
