Every Friday afternoon, you can see a group of students in the "Sunshine Book Corner" of No.3 Middle School. They are the volunteer managers of the book corner, and they spend their after-school time taking care of this small but warm corner.
The book corner was set up three years ago. At first, there were only 200 books, most of which were donated by teachers and students. Now, there are more than 1,500 books here. The volunteers do a lot of work every week. They sort the books by different subjects, check the books to make sure they are in good condition, and help students borrow and return books. They also make special posters to recommend good books to their classmates.
Li Mei, a Grade 8 student, is one of the volunteers. "I joined the team last year. I love reading, so I want to share the joy of reading with more people," she said. "Every time I see a student find his favorite book here, I feel very happy and proud. This volunteer job also helps me develop my communication and organizational skills. I have made many new friends here too."
The book corner also has some special activities. For example, every month, they hold a "book sharing meeting", where students can talk about their favorite books and exchange books with each other. They also send books to the village schools nearby twice a year. "We hope to pass on the warmth of books to more children," said Li Mei.

Sugar painting is a kind of traditional Chinese folk art. It has a history of more than 600 years. With hot sugar syrup, artists can draw different kinds of pictures, like animals, flowers and even cartoon characters, on a stone board. It is loved by both children and adults.
To pass on this traditional art, 18-year-old Zhang Hao and his team started a volunteer project in his hometown. They go to the community and primary schools every weekend to teach people how to make sugar paintings for free.
Zhang Hao learned sugar painting from his grandfather when he was 10 years old. His grandfather is a famous sugar painting artist in the city. "When I was a little boy, I always saw my grandfather draw sugar paintings at the market. Many people would stand around and watch him, and the children were always excited to get the sweet paintings. I fell in love with this art at that time," Zhang Hao said.
At first, only a few people came to their classes. But now, their classes are very popular. Every weekend, more than 30 people, from 6-year-old kids to 70-year-old elders, come to learn. The volunteers teach them step by step: how to boil the sugar syrup, how to hold the spoon, and how to draw different pictures. They also tell people the history and stories behind sugar painting.
"Many young people now know little about traditional folk art. We want to help more people learn about sugar painting, and love this beautiful art. For many children in the mountain villages of Guizhou, getting a good education is not easy. There are not enough teachers in the village schools, and the students have few chances to learn English, art and music. To help these children, 24-year-old Wang Lin started a volunteer teaching project 4 years ago.
Wang Lin was born in a small village in Guizhou. When she was a child, she got help from many kind people, and went to college in Guangzhou. After graduating from college, she gave up the job in the big city, and went back to her hometown to be a volunteer teacher.
At first, she taught English in a village school. She found that many students were afraid to speak English, so she created interesting games and songs to help them learn. Soon, the students became more and more interested in English. Later, she invited her college classmates to join her, and started the volunteer teaching project. Now, there are 32 volunteer teachers in the team. They go to 8 village schools in Guizhou, and teach English, art, music and P.E. to the students.
The volunteer teachers also help the children in many other ways. They raise money to buy books, stationery and warm clothes for the students. They also talk with the left-behind children, and help them solve their problems in life and study.
