Lola is our cat. She used to live in a large waste bin(垃圾箱), so when we brought her home, sh
e chose to keep her distance(距离). The period of getting her trust was long, but in the end, we
succeeded. One day, however, she suddenly disappeared.
Sometimes Lola slept in bed with us, and most of the time she would stay in the yard. So, when
she didn't come home one night, we all went out to look for her.
I spoke with neighbors about her disappearance and heard some awful things about some people wh
o were killing cats. We printed posters and hung them up around the neighborhood. I wrote an ope
n letter to all of our neighbors. I even took a day off from work and stayed up all night, feari
ng the worst.
The next morning, a very nice woman left us a voicemail(电话留言) saying that she thought she h
ad found our cat.We drove to a nearby Walmart parking lot and got our cat back.
For the last two years, I kept reminding myself to find this woman and thank her for finding ou
r cat. Time went past until a few months ago. One day, Susie Hansen, the boss of an animal prote
ction organization where I am working now, asked me to go to Walmart to buy some pet food. As I h
eaded there, I remembered that day when that woman told us the news about Lola. At that time, I
still had not given up hope of meeting her.
Recently, I looked at my phone and wondered why I had Susie's number saved as“Susie Cat Finde
r”. Finally, I put it together. It was Susie Hansen who brought our Lola back to us! What a lov
ely coincidence(巧合)! Now I find out that she is my boss. Isn't that amazing

The way the mind works is heavily influenced by culture. Two people from different cultures can
look at the same picture and see it in different ways. Culture also teaches people how to see a
nd describe their experiences.
Asians think differently from Westerners because their culture teaches them to care more about
society, family and historical background. Western culture, and especially American culture, pro
bably pay more attention to individual(个人的) success and being independent of family.
Culture makes Eastern Asians more holistic(全面的). When trying to understand a situation, they
like to see the whole picture. They trust feelings and pay attention to relationships because t
hese are value d highly in their culture.
However, Westerners seem to be more analytic. When they try to understand something, Westerners
usually prefer to think over small pieces of information first and build their knowledge piece
by piece in order to understand the whole picture.
In one research, Japanese and Americans watched and reported what they saw underwater. Most of
the Americans started by explaining the details(细节), for example, saying there were large fish
in the front on the right. However, theJapanese talked about the environment first. For example,
“There is a blue sea. The big fish swam past the green seaweed(海草).”
This research shows the traditional idea that Americans are less interested in social backgroun
d and place importance on the individual. The Japanese, on the other hand, place more importance
on social background.
