Helen Keller was a famous writer. She became blind and lost her hearing at the age of nineteen months after a serious illness. Helen met her home teacher, Sullivan, when she was six years old and she learned to read and write by touching. This helped her to understand and communicate with the world around her. At the age of fourteen, Helen went to a special school for the deaf and blind. When she was twenty-three years old, Helen published her first book. The book told the story of her early life. Following that, Helen published some other books. In 1903, she wrote the world-famous classic Three Days to See. From Helen Keller, we can learn an important lesson: No difficulty can stop us from being successful.

My teacher was born in a small mountain village. His poor family couldn’t afford to send him to school. It seemed he would spend his whole life in the mountains, just like his parents and grandparents. However, he had a dream to explore beyond the mountains. He borrowed books from his friends and taught himself. He worked hard and made progress every day. After years of efforts, he passed the exam to enter college and worked as a teacher after he graduated. He realized his dream through hard work and with a strong will.
From my teacher’s story, I learn that hard work is the key to success. Stick to your dream and you will succeed.

be afraid to do sth. 意为“害怕做某事”。

explain 意为“解释;说明;阐释”。explain 的常见用法:(1)explain (that) 从句 (2)explain sth. to sb. 向某人解释某事
例:She explained that there was something wrong with her cellphone.她解释说她的手机出了故障。
My math teacher explained the difficult problem to me carefully after class.课后,我的数学老师耐心地给我讲解了那道难题。
3.Math is really difficult for me and math problems always give me a big
headache.数学对我来说真的很难,数学题总是让我头疼不已。
(1)give sb. a big headache 意为“让某人很头痛 / 为难”。此时 headache 在这里意为“使人头痛的事,棘手的事,难题”。
(2)headache 作名词时还可意为“头痛”。have a headache 意为“头痛”。

(1)本句中serious为形容词,意为“严重的”。
例:a serious illness 一种严重的疾病 a serious problem 一个严重的问题

(2)serious的副词形式seriously,意为“严重地”。常用搭配有:take sb./sth. seriously 认真对待某人 / 某事 be serious about sb./sth. 认真对待某人 / 某事

本句中afford,动词,意为“承担得起(后果)”,常与 can,could,be able to 连用,后跟不定式结构,构成短语 afford to do sth.,意为“负担得起做某事”,常用于否定句和疑问句。
例:He couldn’t even afford a nice coat.他甚至买不起一件好看的外套。
6.He worked hard and made progress every day. After years of efforts, he
passed the exam to enter college and worked as a teacher after he graduated.
他勤奋刻苦,每天都在进步。经过多年的努力,他考上了大学,毕业后成了一名教师。
(1)progress,不可数名词,意为“进步;进展”。
make progress 意为“ 取得进步”,progress前可加形容词进行修饰,如
slow/steady/rapid/good 等,意为“缓慢的/平稳的/快速的/良好的进步或进展”。
例:He worked hard at English and made great progress.他努力学习英语,并取得了很大的进步。
(2)effort,可数名词,意为“努力;试图”。常见搭配有:spare no effort to do sth.全力以赴 / 不遗余力做某事。
例:To win the final football match, everyone in our team spared no effort to train hard.为了赢得最终的足球比赛,我们队伍的每个人都不遗余力地努力训练。
(3)graduate,动词,意为“毕业”。其名词形式为graduation,是不可数名词,意为“(大学或美国高中的)毕业”。
常见搭配有:graduate from + 学校,从······学校毕业

(1)realize,动词,意为“实现;意识到”。realize one’s dream 意为“实现某人的梦想”,可与 achieve one’s dream 互换。也可表达为make one’s dream come true 意为“某人的愿望、梦想等实现,成真”。

我需要努力学习,实现我的梦想。
(2)will,名词,意为“意志,毅力,决心”。strong will 意为“坚强的意志”。
例:Where there is a will, there is a way.
有志者事竟成。

the key to success 成功的关键,类似短语:
